Could this party in this state get any dumber? By moving the primary to today's early date, Democratic Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm and the Democratic-controlled state House double-dared the national Democrats to strip all Michigan's delegates. And now, here we are. Meanwhile, the Republican national honchos, in a brief fit of rationality, cut Michigan's delegates by half. (A punishment that probably doesn't outweigh the ill-gotten gains - expect more states doing likewise, next round - but I digress from my rant!) Most independents and some Dems are now voting in the Republican primary, because they'd like their votes to possibly mean something. Go figure.

Anyone who's had psych 101 knows that if you select a certain item (say, Mitt Romney) from a range of available options, you make it much more likely that you will think of that item as an especially good one. You therefore make it much more likely that you select that item again in a different choice (as for example, in the general election), even if the stakes are higher.

The Michigan Dems were in a position to anticipate at least some of these negative consequences, but went ahead anyway. Then Edwards and Obama made good on their pledges to withdraw from the rogue primary, and now Clinton :vomit: is the only major player left on our ballot. But wait - it gets worse.

This is from MSNBC around the time of the idiotic Michigan decision:
Michigan officials anticipated the action by the Democratic National Committee's rules panel. But Michigan Democratic Chairman Mark Brewer said before the vote that he didn't think the delegates would be lost for good. He expects the Democratic presidential nominee will insist the state's delegates be seated at the convention.

So in other words, AFTER the nominee is already selected, he or she will insist that Michigan's delegates be seated? :crazyeye: I swear folks, I am not making this up!

But wait, it gets even worse! Suppose, in Michigan Democratic fantasy come true, our delegates do have their votes counted (at a point where it actually matters). If you hate Hillary, you have the choice of voting "Uncommitted" - which gets you a delegate who might vote for anyone, they don't have to say - or you could vote for Gravel or Kucinich, who are still on the ballot. Now Gravel and Kucinich being lefties and all, and Hillary being more centrist (to the extent to which she actually stands for anything at all), it's clear that Gravel or Kucinich would throw their votes to Edwards or Obama rather than see Hillary win it. So, since Kucinich started with a bit more than Gravel, you'd probably expect the bigwig Obama and Edwards supporters to urge the troops to vote Kucinich. Well of course that's what you'd do, because you have at least two neurons that connect - unlike our local Dems!

From the Detroit Free Press:
Detroiters for Uncommitted Voters, a group of mostly Obama supporters, wants to make sure that people vote in the Democratic primary Tuesday, even if their candidate isn't on the ballot.

"We really want to educate people on what they should do," said Edna Bell, a former Wayne County commissioner. "If Michigan voters want change, the uncommitted vote is their way to make their voices heard."

It's presumed that most uncommitted delegates will favor Obama or Edwards, but once at the convention they can support any candidate in contention for the Democratic nomination.

U.S. Rep. John Conyers and his wife, Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers, will begin airing radio ads this week urging voters to cast their ballots for uncommitted.

So, there you have it. I voted Uncommitted, of course. If you can't fight the idiots - Kucinich won't make the 15% critical threshold to get even a single delegate, so Uncommitted is the only way to say ABC (anybody but Clinton) - join 'em :crazyeye:

if the democrats allow the delegates i will absolutely not vote for a democrat. i know i wont vote for hillary anyway (her subprime bailout is the most horrific thing i've heard from any candidate, and this includes huckabees god's law comments.) even if obama won but had to contend against these ill gotten delegates i'd tell the democrats to go kick rocks.

What would be most interesting is if Florida and Michigan have no say if these elections go the the convention!
