[R&F] Quick question about alliances

I see that alliances increase in levels and provide more stuff when they promote. It says that you gain alliance points every turn, but can generate more points by "trading" with your ally. What do they mean by this - sending trade routes to them, making resource trades (inclusive or exclusive of selling resources), or both?
