quick question about bombarding

I'm new to the civ series, and also very unexperienced with air and ship bombarding...

I noticed that when you bombard sometimes the unit defending gets damaged. However, even when I do this with like 3-4 bombers they will never drop below one HP and die! Can they ever die from bombarding or no?

I believe 1 is as low as it goes. I tried to reduce a city to zip using about 5 artillery units and went about 10 turns with no success. Adding a couple of bombers did nothing either.
