Quick Question on Marathon

Does marathon "balance" out due to it's length (IE Longer research times longer production times) or is it like playing a standard game with more turns?

Everything takes more turns. I wouldn't adivse playing marathon in Civ5. I used to play it all the time in Civ4, because it allowed you to really experience the eras and their distinctive traits, but in civ5 it just amounts to an exercise in pressing Enter.

Thanks for the advice so should I stick to standard? Or is there another difficulty that similar to marathon in Civ IV and while I"m here is there any way to speed up construction of units/buildings, I mean is it me or does everything that much longer in Civ V

I haven't tried epic yet (that's the one between standart and marathon), but I have the ffeling that standart in Civ5 is paced as Marathon was in Civ4.

If you liked marathon in CIV4 as i did i would play epic on CIV5 . I'm finding epic about right for me .

The only problem is that research compared to building is far too quick late game , by the time you build a unit you have the next tech to build a better one (around 7-10 turns) . So you quickly get all the techs without much time to build anything , nevermind fighting a modern war .

Really hope they change the research times in epic/marathon , at the moment the modern era is a waste of time.

I dont find build times that bad , if your city is geared for building its does the job . One thing i find helps is clicking the 'manual' button for specialists , depending on the setup it can make building or growing alot quicker.

And just build the buildings that increase unit build times , and production . Just only build them all in dedicated building cities or it gets expensive .

Or gear your cities for money and buy units.

epic seems like a nice pace. standard was WAY to quick. i am trying my first marathon game so we will see how that goes!

I use the more marathon mod. Speeds construction time and slighty increases later tech research. Late stage techs are still a little to fast but I'm really liking marathon with the mod.

Otherwise stick with epic.

The big reason to play with Marathon is for use with the larger maps where you want units produced in your home cities to have half a chance to get to the war front before they expire.

In Civ4, it was not unusual for a unit to take 10-15 turns to get to the front lines on a huge map. Wars often lasted for dozens of turns (a dozen-turn war was short in Marathon/Huge). So if you want to experience an epic war where you're constantly reinforcing front line troops on a huge map, Marathon made sense.

In Civ5, since huge maps crash frequently, I'm stuck playing on standard/large. Epic fits pretty well to those map sizes, more so then marathon.
