(so as not to bury the lede) What happens if a city-state captured a capital? This is BNW of course, not the vanilla game.
I'm playing a game now that I thought was going to be a science victory, but I accidentally disabled everything but domination when I set it up (I didn't go into the advanced game settings and it just inherited that) and I didn't realize that until after I'd gone Piety and took Jesuit Education and took the Freedom ideology. I had wondered why Montezuma denounced me as soon as we met, and the other AIs have been so aggressive; mostly towards each other. At least I hadn't wasted a policy of Space Procurement. Anyway, I finally got the war machine cranked up and while I was sieging a capital, a city state swoops in and captures it. Will I be able to get a domination victory without declaring war on my CS ally and taking that city from them? I'll save that one for last just in case.
If I look at the victory screen, it says the Aztecs have not built a capital. Kind of like when you destroy a capital in a One City Challenge game. (the Aztecs are still in this game; I liberated Monty so I'd have someone to give trash cities to)
Edit: I just finished the game. I did not have to capture that capital previously taken by a city-state. If Monty (or maybe one of the other AIs) had recovered it, it might have been in play again; I don't know.
