Well, after my failed Hatty game, I decided that it was time for me to start another game and maybe be really good at it if possible ;). So this game I'll try to get my economy up effectively, REX more aggressively, and place cities more proficiently than ever before seen by...um, by...well at least by me ;).

Settings:
Monarch
Normal
Pangaea/Standard
Huts/Events OFF

The leader

Agr + Wheel is a path straight to Pottery I believe and will allow quick growth and quick resource hookup. Musketeer seems alright, like a weaker knight that ignores walls but I don't see too much special about it. Salon seems like it's more about culture victories with the free artist but I suppose if I ran Rep it would be 3 beakers on top of the culture.

The Start:

Well, i think I'm gonna SIP, I don't really see any reason to move Tech path Mining->Pottery->BW?

Anyways, I'd like this to be as accessable as possible so if you'd like a different difficulty or speed, just ask.

Moving settler 1N (grab stone) or 1W (may grab more green but may lose a hill?) seems like a good idea to minimize the non-clam water tiles in your capital. Moving the warrior 1SW maybe will help you decide.

I would suggest re-rolling. Something is screwy with your settings.

Spoiler :

This has to be high sea levels, because there's no way a standard map would have yielded this in 3 turns:

Spoiler :

You know how to win from here, but this wouldn't be a good learning game by any stretch.

+1 for the reroll. Simply due to the fact that there is no point to waste the beautifuly starting tech combo on a junk start like this. If your plan is to expand quickly then get yourself a start for it. No shame in that.
+5 for the reroll after seeing the spoiler of mich ;)

Alright, I'll get a diff map, maybe even change the mapscript to Pangea (to practice REXing quickly to get a good, large empire) or custom continents to practice iso any preference either way?

Radio - Pangaea is fine or any core map. Tectonics is not the best map to learn on. Stick with standard settings and maps and stay away from iso for now. I see no point in "deliberately" seeking iso situation when you are struggling.

Also the first screenshot shows that you looked in the worldbuilder and then took the screenie. Might want to consider locking modified assets if you can't keep yourself from cheating and looking into the worldbuilder.

Fade effect in the screenshot shows the surrounding terrain. You don't get that unless you've just closed worldbuilder.

Actually Fleme, it does do the same thing if you use the regenerate map feature -sometimes. He coulda grabbed the shot right after map regen. (I actually did think the same thing as you though at first)

I did some investigating/interrogation and he said that yes he did use Worldbuilder and that he added just 1 resource near a civ for "balance purposes". Now I'm just hoping it was minor addition, a Horse or something near a civ with a horse UU, I have no clue but he also said that he made no other changes. :undecide: I really don't know why he did that but whatever, I just loaded the autosave so it should be alright again.

EDIT: @Fleme: Where would I find "Lock Modified Assets" so if I tell my brother to "sit here and click end turn while I go do something" he can't possibly look into worldbuilder and make "balance readjustments".

Well, to begin a semi-controversial game I decided to SIP.

Cows, bananas, and dry corn plus tons of grasslands, it seems to scream GP farm to me but I also like cottaging early as well, any suggestions with the cap?

Then I basically just explored around a bit and went Mining->BW->AH->Pottery->Start Writing.

I met the supporting cast

First the Russian leader with the most glorious moustache in the game!

Then a builder

And finally, our favorite raider from the north, the one, the only, Ragnar!

And I got a settler and warrior escort just waiting to go so once again it's time to play: Which City Spot is Best(/Not the Worst)!

The three locations named "Easy _" are spots that I could get to quickly and set up as fast as possible, Russia Block/Gold Coppe(r) is fairly self explanitory, block Russia from going straight west into my land while nabbing copper (after a borderpop), gold and quite a few hills.

Then in the Northeast we have GP Farm? which I feel would be great for specialists due to cows, rice, and the possibility of farmed (rather than my usual cottaged) floodplains. The Crappy Parasite is a title I feel sums it up quite nicely but I haven't yet seen its entire bfc to know yet.

So, any suggestions, as in my previous games, city placement is always an issue for me.

redo your dot map with a food resource for each city. overlap if you have to.

I would likely Settle toward Stalin, maybe 2 e of the capitals cow and 1W og the horse. It could borrow the cow from the cap for growth and work grassland horse, grassland gems and grow capital cottages if the Cap needs the food back later

Easy-2 clearly belongs two tiles north of your location. Next to the horse, where it can use the cows for food.

Speaking of which - why on earth are you not working the cows?
