I've been really intrigued by your mod, but I have a bad feeling it's not going to work with Deliverator's Steel & Thunder mods which add additional units to the game :( has anybody here tried to use both Sostratus' mod alongside the Steel & Thunder mods?

Because it is such a simple mod, what is most likely to happen is it will set the base units’ strengths to what I have adjusted them to, but any added units won’t be affected- and thus there’s likely to be some minor balance issues when you jump from vanilla unit to S&T unit.

In my current game I am trying to find and destroy one barb camp for many, many turns, and every time when I think I finally got it, they spawn the next generation of more modern units. Damn, I was so proud to send them my two first crossbowmen just to see them lose their lives against a field cannon. And I am many techs away from field cannons...
Can't tell you how much I hate barbarians, but when I turn them off, the AI goes crazy against me...

anyone remember how in Civ 5 it was such a big deal when your starting warrior stepped on a ruin and got upgraded to a spearman? you could win a hun domination game from that. you could rush a neighboring civ, take out a camp, while in Civ 6 Spearmen are routinely defeated by warriors :D

The zulus are basically sophisticated, playable barb camps.

Try having them as your ingame neighbor.
    Stop your whining. Jk

I love raging barbs. I also loved them in cIV.
When that Barb axeman appeared on a hill, out of the fog, it literally gave me chills. Lol.

The barbs in Civ VI are strong again. Unlike the wimpy, emasculated barbs of Civilization 5.

However, there should be settings to dial down the barbs, if one doesn't like them. That way everyone is happy.

there is a setting for that, y'know :D it tones them down to.. zero.

do the developers really need to put additional work in an additional barbarian difficulty so that the people who want to have barbarians but think barbarians are a little too strong, can play with barbarians, too? seems like the ultimate wish fulfillment fantasy.

I'd rather they put some time into improving the core game, AI, religion and a million other issues. barbarians aren't a problem for most experienced players, and if you do struggle with them you can tone down difficulty or untick barbs. everyone can choose their own difficulty, what more is needed? I mean, that's what these options are for.

All or nothing is not the answer. ;)

Better barb ai and better civ ai can be done together.

Anyone ever play a large map depopulated by 1 civ on epic speed, deity or immortal? Yah have fun with the barbs. If you're lucky with defensible borders you can clear a safe space and eventually explore but don't be surprised to see AI cities burning or gone altogether.

EDIT: But don't change them, necessarily.

I play epic speed 90% of my games, minus 2Civ and minus 3CS, so standard maps size, with small map size population. It definitely isnt fun to have 3 scouts discover your capital sub T10 when you still have the starting warrior and the scout or slinger is still 2-3 turns away. Yesterday was a particularly tough one. Around T15 I got an endless stream of horsemen and horse archers until I could clear the camps around T100 and 3 units lost. Which delayed my progress massively. Lucky my closest neighbor was to the other side of a mountain range, or I would have been stomped easily.

Had a game where I just had to laugh. Got seen by a scout on turn 11, there was literally no way I could have killed it or stopped it getting back to camp in time. By turn 16, I was being attacked by 2 Barbarian Horsemen and 1 Barbarian Horse Archer. By turn 19, that was 3 of each. Then Tomyris appeared on the other side of me.

Mysteriously, Civ VI crashed shortly after.

I remember trying this mod but having an animal attack your city with a battering ram was a bit strange....

I wish the barb XP worked like a more gradual diminishing returns, so full XP at first level, half XP at second, a third or quarter at third, etc. The other thing is that I wish Survey policy doubled XP of a promoted scout from 1 to 2. It’s hard to get scouts promoted if you’re not warring.

I was going to start a new thread but I guess we’ll see what this one does.
I’m going to write a barb guide as there are a few bits and pieces in there that I did not know about when I started looking into it.
So anyone got any particular knowledge or questions they have, some comments in this thread work well already but just offering it out there.

I feel like barbarian scouts should only have 2 movement, that would massively balance them without entirely removing the fun. Very frustrating that you can't catch them even if you tried with warriors.

I think a barb guide would be great. There are many many details I can think of like how LOS works for the barb scout spotting your city, how many turns they will spawn, and how if you can't still kill that initial scout another horde will starting spawning after x turns, etc. Not to mention how even individual units like the horseman will scale in CS, and when/how do they get siege support units?

I can't claim any particular "knowledge" but I do know that game speed makes a huge difference to my tactics. One thing both the player and AI enjoy as an advantage over barbarians is the ability to promote and heal. However this advantage is weaker at slower speeds, like when the first promotion is 22 exp away not 15.

Yeah but you get more of em to kill in the same time, just as you get less at faster speeds.
Fine on the other questions, what do you mean by this?

I wholly concur with this. It's so frustrating that when you see a scout, given that it takes 2-3 hits to kill them, I'm usually too late. Lately I've been trying to more often not actually try to kill it, but instead it's more about redirecting it away from the nearby camp. I'd certainly be interested to know any guidelines for how they make certain decisions, and if there are some good tips on how to handle them. I still try to get a scout first, but honestly, they're so dangerous that I feel that I should be switching back to slinger-first to have a chance at them, never mind fighting off an early AI DOW.

Also, it might be a small sample size, but I definitely feel like barbs spawn faster and more aggressively than they used to. More than once I've started a game and been wholly overrun by them. Heck, in my current game, it as a bit later, but I ran over the English with virtually no resistance, and then nearby from London, I saw one of the biggest barbarian raiding parties I've ever seen. Probably 3-4 swordsmen, 4-5 crossbows, 2-3 catapults. Thankfully they were mostly just trotting along, because had they beelined my newly captured cities, honestly they would have easily take out one or two of them.

One thing I do not understand with barbs is: they sometimes do not attack AI. For example, wounded AI scout next to barb and my warrior - barb tries to kill my warrior. Sometimes I can see barb army standing around AI city doing nothing. From time to time, spawning rate is ridiculous and two archers and one warrior/spearman is not enough to kill camp. And one last thing, this can be my imagination, but I am convinced that barbs love holy sites - every barb in the vicinity just knows location of MY holy site and is going directly to it. Worker or settler without escort? Wounded unit? Nah, let's go pillage holy site!
