What do we know about RR?
How much are they, and what do they give us?
They cost 1 Iron and 1 Coal per tile. They contribute to Global Climate change. They are built by Military Engineers.
They move faster than roads. They increase yields on Trade Routes that pass over them.
What I know from the streams is that the AI does not build them... surpriseeee!!!
Has anyone seen them on AI lands in any stream?
AI probably isn't building them because they spend their charges building dumb tunnels.
Or because they don't build engineers
Oh they certainly build them, there are tunnels all over the place in the youtube videos.
Again, has anyone seen RRs built by the AI in any of the streams?
ok. haven't bothered watching much of those videos so didn't know.
yes, in the portion of today's livestream where they are playing as Germany, there are some visible in AI lands
railroads aren't easy to see on the map, and many of the youtubers don't spend much time over AI territory. I'll try to keep an eye out. But I would be surprised if they didn't build any in Quill's Canada game, that game went pretty late.
Good thing I didn't buy it
BTW... English Engineers being cheaper and with more charges is likely a nod the the “Navvies”. They did amazing feats of work... basically they got all the alcoholics and said as long as you work hard you can drink and eat all you want... they did amazing feats.
You are aware that it is a scenario (first turn). That's just how the map was made... so still no AI railroads afaik.
good call, my bad.
I spent a few minutes looking and could not find any. But there are very few opportunities, since they don't spend much time looking at opponents lands in the late game. Also they could have tons of railroads and we wouldn't know unless we had vision, right?
It's also hard to say exactly how useful railroads are. I can imagine I'm only really going to want to throw them down on the main paths my units might take, or on the path of my traders.
ME don’t use a charge building railways. Does anyone know if the same rule applies to ME building normal roads?
You just cited two core uses RR will have. If AI does not build them, another asymmetry in favor of the human player, as if we need more...
I’m surprised how subdued Firaxis has been about discussing railroads. They have spent a ton of time on other similar features, like canals and dams, but very little on the railroads.
I wish they would create a railroad wonder or improvement to give these guys a boost. Perhaps high speed rail or electric locomotives to reduce the resource costs or increase speed?
Well we know railroads allow units to move quicker across the map, that is their primary bonus in Civ IV and V IIRC. Increased trade routes on yields that pass over them is a sweet bonus. I'll definitely have a railroad between all my cities.
In Civ IV if you had a resource (like Iron or Copper) and built a railroad to it you'd get a bonus hammer, I hope that happens in GS too.
It won't happen because of how stupid it looks on the map with rail spaghetti everywhere, plus it's too much micro for too little benefit
