It says in my system manual that I have 256 MB of RAM. Recently, I tried to play Warhammer 40k for the first time after a smooth install. It said I need 256 MB of RAM. Whats going on? How can I check my systems RAM?

What OS are you using?

If it's Windows then you can go to Control Panel > System.

If you want to know exactly what hardware you have then download CPU-Z from this site:

It says 248 under system, but on the sticker on the front of the computer, (came with it the day I got it) it says that I have 256. Heres some games I've platyed, if you know off the top of your head what ram they require, then try to make a judgement

Civ, PTW, C3C
Pirates
Rise Of Nations
Simpsons Hit and Run
Freedom Fighters
AoE II

This tells me that you have an integrated graphics card. Unfortunately this is taking 8MB of your system RAM away. If a game requires 256MB of RAM then you will not have enough.

There are 2 solutions to this problem:
1) Get more RAM.
2) Get a dedicated graphics card.

Which is cheaper?

Probably the graphics card. It only needs to be a cheap one as anything will be an upgrade over a 8MB integrated card. You will need to check your mobo to see what connections are available though.

mobo? And can I get a graphics card at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.?

mobo = motherboard

Best buy looks far too expensive and Circuit city is only reasonable after a mail-in rebate. Try newegg.com. You should be able to pick up a suitable card for around $30 - $40. As I said before, you should check what connections your mobo has first. If you are unsure then just say what model the mobo is and I can find out for you.

How can I find the model of "mobo." Thanks for all the help.

Either look in the manual or use the tool I linked to in post #2.

I can't see the text as the image is too small.

Edit: The new one is better. :)

I've been checking RAM prices on newegg and it seems it costs less than I thought. You could get another 128MB for under $20. Again this will depend on your mobo as you need to determine how many RAM slots you have and what type of RAM you need.

I dont really understand the results of my "CPU-Z" tests. Can you determine what I need? Or do I need to post more screenies?

Is this your mobo?

If not then CPU-Z may not be determining your system correctly, or maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

Btw, it would be helpful for me to see the CPU and SPD tabs from CPU-Z

This tells me that you have 1x 256MB RAM stick in your machine instead of 2x 128MB. Do you know if this is the case?

If so then it would probably be a better option to get more RAM instead of a graphics card, as you do not have an AGP interface. You could get a 128MB stick for just under $20 or a 256MB stick for just over $30 from newegg.com

FYI you need PC2100 DDR-266 memory.

Im not sure about the memory sticks. But I'll buy a 128 for now. Thanks for the help. One last question: Where do I install the mem. stick?

The easiest way to check is to open up your case. You should see one RAM stick in one slot and an empty slot next to it. The RAM slots are the long horizontal black sockets with white clips on the ends (refer to the image in the link in post #15).

If you have any questions about installing the new RAM when you get it then just post again in this thread.

Ok thanks. I'll order the mem stick tomorrow. COuld you do me one more favor and tell me which is the best buy?
