Did they attack? Sometimes the Vedic Aryan barbs don't attack when it passes by a city if the city does not belong to the targeted Civ.

I actually stopped playing right away, but the autosave was still there and they didn't attack me

So, why did you researched Archery with the Romans ? Or this event did not happened to you , but to a AI, and you got the backfire?

Then you should follow the archers. They will attack the targeted city but they will not stay and defend the city. So you can capture an AI city cheaply this way.

I had that happen to me once about the same time frame. I think it was 2800 bc or so. I kept seeing messages that AI civ's were being destroyed and thinking "geez, someone is on a tear" and then they get to me. 4 archers and I had 3 warriors and one city. They attacked and I lost.

I'm not sure if it is just me, but with ANY barbarians, event or normal spawns, they will not attack my city if I only have one(though they still plunder my improvements). As soon as I found a second city though, WHAM!

That's because barbarians will not start entering borders until the the number of cities on the continent/landmass is equal to twice the number of civs on it (I think that's how it works, someone correct me if I'm wrong). Since on most difficulty levels (i.e. Prince and above) you'll found your second city either right before, or sometime after, the AIs found theirs, that'll usually be when the barbs start to attack.

It looked marathon to me .....

They don't scale well in epic either
