Random Rants XLVII: I don't like food anymore!

I miss having toilet paper that didn't fall apart if you looked at it wrong.

Forget toilet paper. Get one of those hand held water jets (not a bidet, just the little hose and the jet).

Never have bits of toilet paper in your bum again! Never hold a piece paper with crap on it again! Never finish the job 90% clean! Never buy toilet paper again.

Trust me on this one. I saw the light years ago and never looked back.

(only downside I see is potentially very cold water in Canada)

#fiftychat isn't working. :(

I really think there should be some regulations that enforce at least a year or two worth of updates on phones as the way it's set up creates a factor of planned obsolescence.

It's not really necessary, there are plenty of solutions for any OS preference that avoids your problems:

1. Buy a Nexus phone.
2. Buy a Windows Phone.
3. Buy an iphone.

I'm sick to death of threads getting hijacked by a certain someone. Adding said someone to the ignore list won't help because even if the user were blocked, their damage could still be seen, like the invisible wind that visibly knocks things down.

And so many issues (with my phone at least and probably yours as well) are due to the fact that they don't update the phones after they are released. I really think there should be some regulations that enforce at least a year or two worth of updates on phones as the way it's set up creates a factor of planned obsolescence.

I currently have 4 major issues with my current phone that really hamper it's usefulness (you may have some of these issues too):

1)The phone is rocking Android 2.1, which means I can't download any new apps. Also, I can no longer even update the old apps that I have and when they stop working I cannot replace them.

2)My phone came with Swype, which lets you type by dragging your finger across the screen. It worked beautifully, but over time, it collected misspellings in the Swype dictionary. You can't access the Swype dictionary, to remove a word, you have to type it, highlight it and then press the Swype button and press OK to delete it. This is beyond tedious when you have used the phone for 4 years and it collects misspellings (on it's own, without confirmation) faster than you can remove them. Thus, I can't use that feature at all.

3)For some reason, no computer will recognize my phone anymore. So the only way I can add or remove music or pictures is by removing the microSD card. Again, this makes swapping files so tedious as to be useless to me.

4)Web pages load zoomed all the way out. I can zoom in, but sometimes the phone doesn't properly resize text or objects so everything becomes unreasonable. Plus, if I'm using a website such as CFC, even if I zoom in, as soon as I load a new page, it defaults to the zoomed-out view. More tedium.

Sound familiar?

I'm locked into this contract until December and I'm going to switch carriers so I can't buy a new phone at the moment.
__________

If it's a fairly well known device you can put a custom firmware on it like the CyanogenMod which is based on the 4.2

Does maybe not really belong here, but: Hell, some people don't really even have a minimum amount of decency.
Sitting on the toilet. Hear my floormate in the hallway talking. Okay, I think, he's at the phone (saw him earlier).
Hear my floormate entering the bathroom. Still talking.
Hear my floormate entering the toilet cabin. Still talking.
Hear my floormate pissing. Still talking.
Hear my floormate flushing the toilet. Still talking.
Hear my floormate leaving the bathroom (without washing his hands). Still talking.

WTH o_O!?!
People, don't do that.
If you ever talk to me at the phone while being on the toilet, I'll not be anymore your friend.

I want to learn so many languages, but most of them are useless and difficult. And I'm not quite fluent in German yet. Where should I start? Afrikaans? Russian? Arabic? Hungarian? Mongolian? Georgian? Breton?

Out of all of those my picks would be Russian and Arabic. Both are the Lingua Franca of a large area (Ex-USSR and, well, the Arabic world)

I'd pick Arabic. Russian may be a better choice (for me) now since Russian tourism is increasing here and all.

Arabic and Mongolian. Arabic because of its wide spread, Mongolian if you are a mining engineer :p - Mongolia is loaded with natural wealth and a country that continues to see relevance as it courts Russia and China

According to CFC wisdom, if you can't just ignore them and deal with it the problem is with you, not the annoying person. /sarcasm

I'd pick Russian over Arabic since Russian has more to do with Western languages, and the alphabet is a lot easier to learn.

HA! russian is still hard.

I want to learn so many languages, but most of them are useless and difficult. And I'm not quite fluent in German yet. Where should I start? Afrikaans? Russian? Arabic? Hungarian? Mongolian? Georgian? Breton?

Lemme do a breakdown here.

Afrikaans: why? just learn dutch if you oughta.
Russian: good language if you're actually interested in a) being a linguist, b) living in the former ussr c) being a masochist
Arabic: it would be my choice since i don't like russian.
Hungarian: why?
Mongolian: why?
Georgian: on god's green effing earth why?
Breton: just learn gaelic.

If you want to learn Latin, I could teach you :)

I'm pretty sure it's just a cold.

Arabic might be nice, supposing that it doesn't make the NSA/CIA/FBI/Homeland Security/other unnamed agencies on whose behalf the Obamadrones will spy on the people single you out, otherwise try Russian -to piss off madviking-, Latin and Greek are always the option for those who have some class.
HA! russian is still hard.
Not if you try studying it while sober, but that'd be against the natsionyal spyirit. *hic*

Afrikaans: Because it's lekker.
Russian: A cool language. My cousin knows it, and it's the first language of this awesome girl I know. Plus it'll be invaluable for a history professor. This is my first choice.
Arabic: Useful, possibly good for history, and my great-aunt would be proud. She can't speak it any more, though. She and my grandpa had Lebanese parents. This is my second choice (tied with Mongolian).
Hungarian: A cool language, and could be useful if I ever go to Hungary. I think it's best to learn a country's language before visiting, and I'd like to go to Hungary.
Mongolian: I really want to visit Mongolia often and for long stretches if at all possible, since I have a fairly strong interest in its history and culture.
Georgian: I love its alphabet, look, and sound. Friggin' useless, though.
Gaelic: I don't like Gaelic, but I do like Breton. Some of my favorite music's Breton, so it might be nice to know. Definitely low-priority, though.

Oh, and I forgot Lithuanian. An awesome language, and a fair amount of interesting history books are in it and no other language.

Ewww. Latin is dead for a reason.:p

I just don't like Gaelic. It looks awful. Breton looks and sounds good.

Put it this way. I can't truly find a girl sexy if there is absolutely no chance I will ever have sex with her.

This is then position you find yourself in my friend.

Just who is the girl in the one anyway ;)

Waiting for you to get back from your wilderness adventure to post so you can comment.

I'm on a similar predicament, Phrossack, I want to learn more languages than I can afford, both regarding time and money!

Gaelic might look ugly, but it sounds lovely and is from a different branch of IndoEuropean languages. Maybe we should each learn one language from every major branch and then bother a lot of people by speaking their languages.

You can also try Finnish if you're brave enough.

Also, Russian is a hard language but it's hard for me to believe it's harder than Hungarian or Breton.
