Yeah that one would suck, I admit.
I'm very content with our system actually because you have a very easy time doing averages:
- you get a number of marks for each subject in each semester (you need at least 2 for all subjects, but you need more for some of them)
- all marks have the same importance, except for some that can be given more weight. For example, a music exam in the highschool I used to be in is worth 1/4 of your semester, even if you can have more than 3 normal grades - therefore, the average for one semester can be (AverageNormalMarks * 3 + exam) / 4 .
- for each subject, you get an average for each semester.
- then for each subject, you get a yearly average (first semester + second semester / 2)
- and then, you get a general average from the yearly average of all the subjects.
- at the end of the year, the person with the highest marks gets a "first prize" for that year, the second gets a second prize, etc. Those prizes are symbolic and not really worth anything (never got any money off one, for example).
When I was in early middle school (5th grade) we even had some mathematical problems involving calculating yearly averages and such.
Because it always goes according to the same formula.
