I haven't played a lot of civ 4, but plenty of the prequels. I came to the forums looking for a discussion on strong/weak UUs/civs and in a few hours of browsing haven't seen anything.

I mainly play 1v1 games on a Duel-sized map against another human... haven't lost so far, and here are the keys to my success.

    1. Caesar's Praetorian
    2. Mao's Cho-Ko-Nu (aka Chuck Norris)
    3. Huyana's Quechua

The games haven't gotten to the knights-level yet otherwise I think that Spain's conquistadors, and (later on) the Cossacks look pretty tough. If you had to pick a civ based on their unit only, what are the best?

These are not in terms of power or usefulness. Just coolness.

    UUs:
    1. Camel archer (survivability)
    2. Fast Worker (the hats)
    3. Keshik (Classical era raiding)

    Civs:
    1. Saladin (<3 spiritual, <3 universities and great people)
    2. Kublai Khan (easier to secure a solid start)
    3. Gandhi (bald)

Edit: On UU #2 - My workers are specialer than your workers.

    UUs

    1. Redcoat (just plain cool, make me feel like I'm playing Britain)
    2. Praetorian (just awesome really, king of classical/ancient
    3. Cossak (need a catherine v elizabeth war in rennaisance/industrial some time)
=3. Samurai (I just think the two first strikes are awesome)

    Leaders

    1. Elizabeth (IMO best two traits, best UU)
    2. Washington (MONEYYYYYYYYYYYY)
    3. Bismark (Flexible I think, and lots of production I've found)

If I had to pick a civ based on UU only, I'd chose Rome or England

    UU's

    Praetorian- Just too powerful.
Conquistador- Really dominant against everything because they can beat pikes
Cossack- See Praetorian, but not as dominant

    Civ's
This is completely opinion. I find aggressive to be a HUGE help when warring.
In my usual games however, I like:
    1. Cathy
    2. Kublai
    3. Mansa

We've played noble, but like SDG said, against another human how much does the difficulty level matter?

    1. Indian fast worker, playing Ganhdi
    2. Chucks, playing Qin
    3. Praetorians
    4. Conquisitors
    5. Red Coat, playing Liz

Since Chop chop strategy is so important, fastworkers become extremely versatile either you go early axemen rush or be a wonder freak. (Ganhdi is probably the best wonder builder since he's also industrious and start with mining).

1.)Cossacks I've seen them take out fortified Riflemen and they can pillage and move like crazy.
2.)Redcoats, can rape everything including Cossacks, but lack of move really screws with my huge land grab during the time.
3.)Kesik, rush to horseback riding, pump out 5-7 Kesiks, PILLAGE, PILLAGE I TELLS YA!!! *Foams at mouth*...then move in with ground forces to mop up.

    UUs:

    1. Cossack. Easily the best allround. The most predominant unit of its era.

    2. Praetorian. Very powerful unit, only watch out for those axemen. WIll absolutely own everything else.

    3. Redcoat. The coolest unit around and my favorite (hence the av). Again a dominant unit.

As you can see the best UU's are the ones which get strength bonuses, as opposed to 10% vs archers or something similar.

As for civs I like the ones who have the UUs above.

    UUs:

    1. Jaguar warr... Just kidding, Cossack!
    2. Praetorian
    3. Conquistador or Keshik (well, I like speedy units)

    Civs:

    1. Russians, Catherine
    2. English, Elizabeth
    3. Americans, George W. (amazing cash flow)

    I also like Arabs/Saladin, Romans/Caesar and Persia/Cyrus.

Fast Workers - should be called Supermen. The only unit they can't outrun cross country is a gunship.

Washington is Incredible! I just won a domination victory by 1790 playing as him on a terra map on epic speed, noble level and never had any serious competition from the AIs.

If Rome lets you live long enough to get to Panzers. Panzers have pushed me over the top in a few "questionable outcome" games. But those games were probably "questionable outcome" because I couldn't expand against Ceasar in the iron age.

    UU´s:

    1. Redcoat (altough I´m German:) ; if I go for cultural victory, i can switch off research a lot earlier.)
    2. Fast Worker (chop, chop, chop)
    3. Skrimisher (great erly defensive unit, on higher levels vs. Barbs.)

    Leaders:

    1. Gandhi sp., ind. ---> cultural victory
    2. Lizzy, fin., phi. rocks
    3. The chinese guy, not the communist one, fin., ind.

The Panzer comes to late, either i have already won or lost. I want another German UU.

I'm French. And German, Mongolian, Irish, a little Dutch, probably some Italian and Spanish... go European ancestry! :)

    1) Praetorians - "easy mode"
    2) Cossacks - Favorite
    3) Redcoats

    Worst...

    16) Musketeers
    17) Jaguars
    18) Navy SEALs

However, traits often balance out UU's, such as Washington (Financial) and Caesar (Expansive).

    Why do you care?
As totally non-militaristic, the only UU I cared about was the Indian Fast Worker when I played Gandhi.

Gandhi is my all-time favorite leader; it made for a good game.

Followed by Bismarck: two games as him. Most recently, I managed to pull a Japan on India (for details, see the German Scholarship Essay Series in Stories and Tales).

I'm not sure about any others...I've played Roosevelt, and that's about it.

    Favorite UU's

    1. Praetorian- Simply overpowering
    2. Panzer- if only it didn't come so late
    3. Cossack- balanced and powerful
    4. Redcoats- during their era they are really powerful
    5. Quecha- great early game rushers

    Honorable Mention: Keshik

    Favorite Civ's
    1. Kublai Kahn- the best civ to conquer with, he makes war easier then it already is
    2. Huayna Capac- Good Quecha rush, but not as good on higher difficulties
    3. Julius Casar- Traits suck, but Praetorians make up for it
    4. Ghandi- I like Industrious and fast worker chopping
    5. Washington- really good traits make up for a lackluster late game UU

    Honorable Mention: Catherine
