Razing or Abandoning?

Is their a difference in effect on reputation between razing a city that you conquered and abandoning it, even on the turn the city was taken? Normally, I build settlers when at war and move them into the newly acquired city and then abandon/rebuild on the site if I like it. Is this preferable to simply razing the city and acquiring the forced labor?

AFAIK, you take a reputation hit for doing either thing. Abandoning even after a couple of turns have passed, it not appreciated by the ai. If I am to believe other posts on this topic, then as long as there are more foreign nationals in that city than people of your own blood, the ai will hate you for abandoning.

ivory is correct. Abandoning a city with a majority of foreign nationals is as much a rep hit as razing. As far as whether or not to raze, it depends. If you're on your way towards world domination and AI opinion matters not, by all means raze away and resettle. It's much more efficient production wise.

One thing you can do that is kinda complicated is this: Under Communism, rush workers out of the recently captured cities. It'll significantly drop their foreign pop. Then you can drop your own workers in to change the mix and abandon without the hit and come out even on workers.

You can always quell the resistance and rush settlers / workers to get the pop to 1.

Works for me. :D

I took over america. BOught several ciys for peace. Then i back stabbed the in front of the whole 22civs. I then did it 4 other times. Each time only carthrage cared. ANd grece went to cautios. A 50 gold bribe to the grece and tech to carthrae kept my rep clean. Carthrage was learning pottery when i was on demcracy. SO giving masonry did not matter.

Don't you need a lot of money for that though? ~ 40g per worker or ~ 120g per settler is a lot of cash for large cities.

The cost is why Communism was specifically called out.

Pop-rushing as a Communist costs population (the main reason I don't like Communism much).

This means that you get double the effect. You lose pop to the rush and for the worker/settler.

Renata,

Buying a worker in ptw costs between 100 and 120 gold. Rushing one costs up to 80 gold, so it's still cheaper to rush them than to buy them.

Also, since you will normally be starving the cities you you are just wasing the opportunity for cheap workers if you don't rush them.

What level were you playing where you could be nearly through the Middle Ages when Carthage was researching(?) one of their starting technologies?

Well it was one of those early techs. If not pottery then one of the others. It was warlord BTW. And they had like 3 citys.
