"I think it's time for a revolution. We switch to Vassalage (+2 xp per unit is nice), and Theocracy (we are going to be building some infrastructure, and it'd be nice to spread Judaism)."

Tell me that's just a typo, and that we revolted into organized religion to spread judaism and build infrastructure, rather than theocracy... that would be :smoke:

Good turns, though! I'm all for taking it to Mansa Musa, although we'd better be prepared for when we do.

Hi, I have a question.

How do you bring up the "enter screen shot (name)" dialog? If I press printscreen, it just automatically saves to a predetermined name.

but I will devote my turns to building Courthouses everywhere and trading
as much as possible in order to rebalance our Economy.
Well just like Sirp I love chopping forests outside our borders
and there are loads of nice workers on far away forests :goodjob:

Kyoto's borders expand
Edo's borders expand
I tentatively let Pisae go for Hanging Gardens but we lose it and get 171gold,
Pisae should be our unit production city so I put it on Courthouse and then Heroic Epic.
Deficit keeps getting smaller and we can go to 60% science.
Redeploy troops at strategic points around Mansa's borders.

Turn 177 (1170 AD)

Rome grows: 15
Rome finishes: Praetorian

Kyoto finishes: Courthouse
Sneak in a worker in Rome to allow for much needed mining of the hills by the lake.
I also put 2 Merchant specialists in Rome and set National Epic to start after the worker,so that we should
get a Great Merchant in about 15 turns.

Turn 180 (1200 AD)
Antium begins: Jewish Missionary
Neapolis begins: Catapult
Jute begins: Praetorian
Osaka begins: Longbowman
Kyoto begins: Granary
Jute begins: Longbowman

We are now 3 turns from Engineering which will greatly increase our logistical response to Mansa's counter-attack.
Sell cows to Saladin for 5gpt and refuse a trade for Pigs Mansa was offering, just to be consistent.

This was a build-up round with a few mil units squeezed in, however we need more Longbows and Elephants but
should get Walata from Mansa pretty soon before he get gunpowder units for example :(

We still have 622g and are researching at 70% with a deficit of only -7g.

Jester’s Turn

I survey our situation, and notice one major fact: we are seriously behind in tech. We desperately need to slow Mansa Musa down, and I’m not sure we don’t have to hit Cyrus as well at some point. At least he isn’t financial.

The only religion not popped yet is Islam. I’m doubtful we could get to it in time, so we’re pretty much just stuck with Judaism, and I suppose Hinduism, now that it’s ours. Plus, if we capture Nianni, we could take the Christian shrine from the Malinese.

Sirp, you weren’t kidding when you said we need more longbows. We’ve got cities defended by archers, and even one by a *chariot*. That’s just not going to do for a war with an opponent who out-techs us. I’m having serious doubts as to whether we can take on Mansa Musa before he gets gunpowder.

Is the plan to use a great merchant and scientist to pop a golden age? I’m not sure what other use there is for a merchant, so I’m presuming yes.

The war with Mansa Musa waits on two things, I decide. One is adequate garrisons in our border towns, freeing up our offensive units for attack. Two is engineering, which will be here in a couple turns. So, it’s military buildup for now, I guess. I save all our money for possible archer-to-longbow upgrades. You never know when you’ll need some emergency cash.

(0) 1200 AD: No changes.

(1) 1210: Missionary spreads Judaism in Jute. I send our workers to the north to cut another forest, and find a Malinese settler/pike/longbow team out to build a new city. Should be interesting to see where they pick. Otherwise, just a snore.

(2) 1220: Snore.

(3) 1230: Feudalism comes in. I set our research to civil service, figuring that bureaucracy might come in handy, and macemen almost certainly will, if things start to go south. Our heroic epic finishes. I look back at realize what the worker in Rome was supposed to be for. Whoops, I sent him north to cut forests. I divert two workers who have nothing better to do to head over and mine hills. Our situation is looking a little better, but I’m going to wait for a few more units to come in before taking on Musa. Hopefully, the delay will not be a problem.

(4) 1240: Napoleon offers compass and 160 gold for engineering. That’s an absolutely awful trade, but we’re far behind in tech, and Napoleon isn’t exactly the tech leader either, so I accept. Musa finishes Angkor Wat. That sure was fast, probably a great engineer. Units keep coming in, so I order some war elephants. Once they come in, we’ll declare war.

(5) 1250: Osaka gets Judaism. Chopping along borders continues, hopefully we’ll clear out all the forests we can before the borders start to press in on us.

(6) 1260: Snore

(7) 1270: Cyrus demands we cancel our deals with Napoleon. I tell him to stuff it. The national epic completes in Rome, and I switch to a pikeman there, just to diversify our defenses a little. Two of our war elephants finish, and I decide it’s now or never. Mansa Musa hasn’t gotten gunpowder yet, and our forces are all in place; it’s time to take the plunge. I dial up Mansa Musa, and tell him that his head would look good on the end of a pike. (note to self: build pikeman to make good on threat.) I move into Mansa’s territory, and lo and behold, Walata is heavily fortified by… two longbowmen. Okay, so maybe I was a little paranoid. Seeing how pathetically vunerable he is, I figure we should try for Niani as well. If we can take both of those, we’ll be in good shape, even if we don’t take anything else this war. Niani is a little better defended, with a knight, a maceman, and three longbows, but still nothing to worry about. Our troops are now right outside Niani, and one turn away from being outside Walata. Hopefully, the Malinese are as much of a paper tiger as they appear to be. Hopefully.

(8) 1280: One knight attacks Jute, and our longbow barely wins. I immediately think we’re in trouble, until I notice that this knight is alone. As Quixotic as that attack was, it didn’t pose any threat to us at all. What’s more, that was the knight at Niani, so that city is now even less defended. Islam is FIDAL. We get civil service, and I set us to paper, hoping to trade it to help catch up in tech. Two knights show up at Walata, but our elephants ought to be able to deal with them. I also notice that I’ve trapped two of our workers on the other side of Malinese territory. Oops. I trade Roosevelt civil service for optics and 80 gold. I could have gotten theology or drama, but I thought we’d rather have a tech that actually leads somewhere, even if it doesn’t do anything for us at this very instant.

(9) 1290: Bombarding cities, moving workers, nothing important.

(10) 1300: A knight kills a longbowman at Jute. Curses. Our war elephant gets revenge by killing a knight, but there’s still a wounded knight on the field that I haven’t got a solution to. I suicide our catapults into Niani, and, rather helpfully, two of them retreat. Our first praetorian overcomes the odds (42%) and wins! As does our second! Our third loses at 80%, but you can’t win ‘em all, can you? The last defenders fall, and Niani is ours. Walata should follow in a turn or two, depending on what risks we want to take. More catapults are being built to replace our honoured martyrs.

I’m thinking we can win this war pretty easily, maybe even take Timbuktu, unless Mansa discovers gunpowder. Even then, we’ve got a fighting chance. At the very least, we can pillage him into oblivion, which I *highly* recommend.

I also think it would be a good plan to go for liberalism. We’ve got a head start on paper, and, especially if we get a golden age, or use our GPs for tech, we can grab it before anyone else. I don’t think I need to mention how nice nationalism can be for a civ of our size, low on infrastructure and high on cities. Plus, the Taj Mahal would give us a golden age, one we could sorely use.

Our economy is in fair shape. We’re losing 24 gpt at 70% science, but we have 930 in the bank, and that’s going to go up the more we conquer and pillage. So, if we need to, we can blitz liberalism (or whatever we decide to go for) with deficit spending. Or, alternately, if Mansa has too many macemen, we can upgrade some praetorians.

I was kind of lost as to what to do with our workers. Two are cutting forests in the north, and I’ve tried to fill in some roads, cottages, farms, etc… wherever they could go, but we’ve got pretty good coverage overall.

There is one heavily promoted Malinese knight in the north. Our cities are not in any danger, but we should probably get our pikeman up there ASAP, since he’s pillaging our furs. Or, we could try to beat him to death with praetorians, although the losses might be a scary.

Try again..how to bring up the screen shot dialog? PrintScreen just automatically saves for me without asking for a name (and sometimes it doesn't save at all).

OK I got it. I'll probably play while I'm doing laundry in the afternoon tomorrow.

I'm not too worried about being behind in tech. Once we've "improved" Musa's lands to Finally Ready For Regent (TM) levels, he wont be much of a researcher.

I think it may be time to consider what victory we are aiming for. Domination, UN or just launch. I originally pegged us for launch, but I don't think domination is at all out of the question if we want to try for it.

Well, here's what happened. The hotel I was as had some idiot semi driver run over a power poll in the midle of the night while I was trying to play, so I there was no power = no internet. I spent yesterday and today at my moms (who was happy to see me for the first time since May) having "Christmass", where there is no internet because she only has a cell phone, so I couldn't even check in. I figured I'd have been skiped by now. However, I can play tonite baring any more friday the 13th kind of garbage .... (the list of things that have happened to me in the last 3 days is too long and annoying to recount)

Well, my Civ4 CD along with other items left at home will be here on Monday. I expected it Friday, but no such luck. I can play Monday night, although I will push a few hours past 48, so if you want to skip or swap me, that is fine. But assuming a few extra hours is fine, I have it.
