RBC13J - Gregarious Germans (Monarch)

Caught the post, and changed the science selection to Arab Learning.

Assassins are in the Muslim tech tree (2'nd age), not the Byzantine one. Is that the one you meant? Anyway, this is probably the last time period we can afford to do minimum research on another "entry" tech, so it is now or never.
I would personally want the Muslim one rather than the Byzantine one, as there are more potential trading partners.

Some more thoughts.
It's means that two other relicts (Franks and England ones) must be picked up with kings. There is nothing special, when kings participate in wars and take trophy’s.;)

I really don't like assassins. They are slow (movement 1) and inquisitors have 3 in all terrain. They have same attack as knights, but they have same production cost (70 shields). Inquisitors have 4 and cost only 30. Only thing is stealth attack, but they don't retreat and have only 1 defense stat. Why we must research slow and expensive unit, when our main force will be knights. If we go to get assassins, it is better idea to have crusader, pikeman and trebuchet force.

Best regards :)

Pre-flight – 1056 AD – We are in first place in victory points. The Abbasids are in second place on the strength of their owning Jerusalem

Since we will want assassins, I am going to start research on Byzantine Ingenuity. That will open up the lower third of the tech tree. Set the science slider to 30% which will give it to us in 23 turns at a budget of +18 gpt.

Go through the long list of civilizations to talk to. Most people are either, stupid, broke or both. No real trading opportunities.

Read Rubberjello’s post and switch to Arab Learning, due in 22 turns.

So after two hours of study, I am ready to hit enter.

IBT – There are way too many settler pairs running around Europe. I mean, what are the Celts going to do with a city to the east of us?

I have just hit the new age and this is my 1st Middle Age scenario. Where should we go to research. I'm thinking Polearms or perhaps Middle Class. We are making a lot of money now due to a deal I made so we can romp.

Here's my log up to turn 6 and the save.

RBC13J – 1089AD – Save looks good. First thing I did was check strength against our nearest neighbors. AVG to Frankish, Danes, Poland and England. Strong to Magyars and Burgandy. Deal situation is: 14 turns left to Burgandy for peace. French; we are paying 37 for 8 turns and they’re paying 10gpt for 10t. 1gpt to Turks for 6t. No others. From reading Bugsys log and looking here we are in builder mode. We are building 2 wonders and England is also building Doomsday book. No military is building and I’m fine with that for now. I covet those smithies we are building and things will be better after they complete. Would like some more workers perhaps.

[1] 1092 – Pisa-Townhall>Manor, it’s making 10g now, 15 is better. The settlers near Rome really threw me. I merged one and now have to get a worker out of there, due in 4 because of starvation. I up the research a to –78gpt to get Arab Learning next turn. I see about 100g for Siegecraft but I don’t have a feel for the going rate though I think as long as I don’t give it to similar tree civs it is OK. I’ll waut a bit as we are about to be in a further tech lead. Workers working.

[2] 1095AD – Basel-Brax>Thall, Dorestad dies of disease, Neuremburg-Thall>Worker when growth happens. I thnk the Turks beat us to the tech. He now has MM and Jihad and does not need our tech. However, Jackpot! We get Map Making, WM, 320g and 67GPT from England for Chivalry. We see the entire world! I think this may up the chances of her attacking in the future but that’s a lot of cash. I think. From France we get another 227g for Chivalry. From the Turks we get Jihad for 6 gpt and Assassination for 120g and WM. Medival Combat in 4 at +63gpt. Upgrade 3 horses and rush the smithie in Salzburg for 112g and feeling good after the shopping spree.

[3] 1098AD – Cologne-Manor>Smith. Salzburg-Smith>Lib. Hamburg-Monastary> THall.Byzantines demand territory map and I slipped and said not now, she didn’t declare. I go back to her and she gives me 3gpt, 8g and her WM. Set Regens to starve to get Knights Templar in 10. Granary will last. Changed Wurzburg Joust Arena to smith. It is not growing anytime soon and has good shield potential. Naumburg Monastary to smith too.

[4] 1101AD - Rush another Smith in Augsburg. Wurxburg-Smith>Library.

[5] 1104AD – Rome-Worker>Walls? Chapelle-Manor> Smith. Augburg-Smith> Assasin. Establist embassy with Magyars in Pest. 7 Spears, a horse and a King building another Spear, 15spt. They are going to roll over someday. Drop the sci-sli for Combat in 1.

[6] Moving to new era. Thinking I don’t know what to pick here and thought since it was late I would table it. We are in the tech lead and I set Wurzburg, I think, to Tapestry in 20. I need some advice. The builds are coming to a close in our best cities and I’m ready to pump knights, crusaders and assassins.

In closing I need advice on which branch of the tree to go for. Now that we have a comfortable lead, I think I want to set up next leader for some warring. Also, with whom. I like the Poles or Magyars with a side of Burgandy.

Turn 6 save

Middle Class, definitely. (Marketplaces) And keep our wonder-builds going!

Remember the plan to get the 4 relics? We need to take out Burgundy, take on France, then England. Forget the Poles/Magyars right now, unless you want a "warm up" short war against them and take a couple of cities.

Kill Burgundy. They have high quality infrastructure and wool. If you attack them, take first Genoa and Naples, as if you take Venice and kill last kingunit the state will collapse. And remaning settler should be sent to Rome and build new city at the place where is today Antwerp (near volcano) :crazyeye:, when Burgundy collapses. That was the reason why I sent settlers to south. And of course I forgot wrote about it. Sorry.
Pokiste

So if we plan it right RJ can go to war with France on his first or second turn.

I would set up a knight invasion sweeping north to south, with some containment troops (swords and slow movers) on the Italian-French boarder.

IIRC, Middle Class sets us up for some good stuff: markets, mills and ports with follow on techs.

I'll go with that but after Middle Class I hope to be able to trade into the branch that gets to Parliament. They have a Forbidden Palace in there. Will finish it tonight putting our troops on the border.

[7] 1110AD – Rearranging forces, but no reinforcements for Milan. I ask her to leave or declare and it’s official. Without a miracle Milan will fall. They have 2 reg horses vs. our vet. I attack and we win unscathed. Now it is their reg vs our vet. Turks will throw 25gpt at us now. I think I can pick up around 70-80 g for MM if I pass it around. War happiness kicks in and now Middle Class is in 6.

IT – We win the horsie battle! Two swords coming and I’m going to try across French lines this time. Wurxburg- Lib>Knight and Middle Class drops to 4 turns.

[8] 1113AD – More moving around.

IT – France asks us to leave and we will out of the other side to Milan. Danes were just cruising by. Augsburg- Our 1st Assassin> another. GA ends :boo: Poles building DDBook. They had zip for cash must have researched it.

[9] 1116AD- Roading to Paris. Troops moving though there are not a tremendous amount. I put the kicked out settler on a boat.

IT – France kicks out some of the back I was bringing after Castille upped the Ante. Verdun-Temple>Worker. Nuremburg-Settler>Granary.

[10] 1119AD – Moved a couple elite swords into Milan. I’m thinking that was a mistake because there are around 6 swords sitting there. But they are our people.

DAMN CASTILLE

And don't trust peoples in rush. I think you know, when you kill last king unit all city's of civ will be toast. And that means, keep settler ready to build new city at the place, where is currently Venice. Not near Rome. That what I meant. Really sorry for creating more chaotic posts.

*(-Or- The report of the 30 year drunken reign of RJ III)
It was around this time of 1119 AD that the craft of beer-making really took off. It was spearheaded (as usual) by the sturdy burghers and peasants of Germany. This was fortunate for King RJ, for he disliked travelling great distances (he tended to run into things and wander off roads easily, for some reason!)
It all began in 1119 when prince RJ III was recovering from his Coronation party with a truly horrific hangover. He claimed he was filled with a divine light, and a voice on high said to him "Find the Perfect Beer". (Some people later said it was all merely the aftereffect of drinking a keg of green beer)
Filled with the importance of this glory of this divine quest, RJ immediately sent out inquiries throughout the kingdom to get the status of all the breweries. He was apalled to learn a large army of Castillian swordsmen were threatening to pillage the micro-brewery at Milan. Fearing the possible loss of his quest. He immediately traveled there - sneaking through the Burgundian lands in the clever disguise of a drunken oaf- and noticed a unit of supposedly Elite Horseman camped out in the brewery courtyard, drunk out of their minds. He woke them up to the point where they had "drunken courage" and sent them out to harass the approaching hordes of 6 units of enemy swordsmen. RJ then set about the more important task of sampling the wares. He was much bemoaning the fact that he didn't bother to bring any of his drinking buddies from Regensburg, when suddenly Conrad showed up!

There was a drunken party afterwards with what remained of the Horseman unit, and Conrad was immediately promoted to lead Germany's 1'st Knights of Glory army. He was sent out of the city for his own protection then. They then settled down for a long siege.

Preturn & IT *boring historian's voiceover* Do a double round of selling maps and Med. Combat to Turks (who are probably very close to researching it themselves.) Get a total of 218 gold and +35 gpt. Upgrade our wounded elite* horse to full knight in Milan to help defense there. Rush Spearman in Milan.
3/3 Sword dies vs 4/4 Knight
3/3 Sword dies vs 3/4 Knight Knight promotes
3/3 Sword kills our elite Knight! :( promotes
3/3 Sword dies vs 5/5 Sword and Louis is generated!

(Gotta love that HRE wonder!)
Last 3/3 Sword gives up and plunders the road. 2 more reg. swords arrive.
Burgundy kicks our reinforcements out to the North (wrong way!) Turks start on the Tapestry.

1122 (1) Strasburg (Knight->Knight) Naumburg (Library-Knight) Hedidelburg (Knight->Knight) Milan (Spear->Spear)
In one of his more lucid moments, King RJ commissions a monument (a small one - money is still tight!) to Conrad's Corsairs - a group of horsemen come Knights that gave their lives for their beer. The foot soldiers, in a jealous moment and a bid to get more beer, generated a heroic soldier of their own on defense. Louis will get promoted to his Knight's spurs and form the 2'nd Knights of Glory. (After an appropriate 3- day beer bash). Milan is looking better on defense now with the Spearmen, although the beer supply is running a little low. Flush with their success, the Elite swords attack out and kill an enemy sword unit easily, as well as the last Elite Horse. The elite Horse gets promoted to Knighthood by RJ III (miraculously healing our their wounds! *hehe*

1125 (2) Rome (Walls->Spear) Cologne (Smith->Knight) Dorestad (Town Hall->Manor) Fatahmids and France start Tapestry.
*****EEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKK!!!!!*** In a waking nightmare, RJ III gets reports that France has invaded all our borders with 4 Knight units and 5 Crusader units. He sends her an envoy with a bunch of useless wine casks he found in Milan and kindly asked her to leave. (after determining we had enough forces in place in case she rudely declared war and try to take some of our Breweries before RJ had a chance to sample it.) She backed down! She must have been going after an enemy to our East, but she would not admit who. On the plus side, our reinforcements finally found their way through foreign territory into Milan's territory. (4 Knight units) "They must have a worse sense of direction than I do", thought RJ! Our steadfast German Elite* Swords (Lucky B@stards!) go out and kill an approaching unit of Castillian swords, just like punching a timeclock (whenever those are going to be invented) at work. Two swords are close by but a Conrad's Knight Army now sweeps into Milan - sucking the place almost dry.

1128 (3) Pisa (Manor->Settler) No more beer in Milan! "That's it!", thought RJ III. "Time for Peace". The Castillians have had enough. In exchange for Peace, they give 10 gold, WM, and an assurance that there are no Breweries in Castille (They are dirt poor, and won't give up a city). RJ, who had heard rumors of an expatriot German burgher in Venice who is brewing an excellent beer, immediately makes plans to "visit" the Burghundians. The treaty is up next turn. All units are told to heal up and then head toward the Burgandy border. The infiltrating French troops are let go. If they want to kill themselves on some foreign soil to the East of us, then let them!

1131 (4) RJ heard mumblings about his drunken buffoonery in the South of France from his stuckup and staid burghers back home. In response to these rumours, RJ declared his wise men to the discover the concept of "Divine Right to Rule" and sell it to the masses - after they have declared that the "Middle Class" is now the preferred middle ground between high class and low class (Go figure! We are paying these bozos waaaaay to much!) A bunch of marketplaces are ordered up in order to help distribute beer to this new class of citizens.
Meanwhile, that tea-totaler Abe in Venice refused a Beer-drinking Visa to Rj, and subsequently RJ invited his whole army to come with him in order to change their minds. A formal declaration of war was hastily put forward by the scribes, so world opinion would not get any worse than it already was for the German Kingdom.

1134 (5) We get Knights Templar built in Regensburg!

Finally, a little bit of Class for Germany! Rumor also has it that these guys brew a mean beer! Now Regensburg starts on a much-needed Blacksmith. Metz (Townhall->Smith) French troops are still pouring through.
Genoa falls swiftly to our 1'st Knight army - 3 reg spears up, 3 reg spears down. Wool is now instantly available to the entire country (so the winters will not feel as cold!) Meanwhile, in Venice. Abe rudely refused entrance to the city to sample their beers. (Despite the fact there was a huge army of Kaaaannnigggts outside.) Woe betide those who get between the Germans and their beer. 3 units of Vet Spears, 2 Units of Reg Spears, 1 Vet sword unit, and Abe's honor guard itself died, learning that fact too late (not one loss! a couple of retreats...) Things seem to pause for minute, and then their entire civilization just disappears!

The real crime in all this, King RJ realizes, is that the beer disappeared to!!! He disconsolently orders the former Burgundians lands occupied by sturdy German settlers, and makes a quick tour of the kingdom sampling beers every few miles.
In one of his more lucid moments, he comes up with a mildly devious plan. The fruity pink French troops pouring through might be sped on their way by allowing them to use our roads instead of them molesting small furry animals in the countryside. However, such agreements usually last 60 years! Since word has reached King RJ's ear that yet another expatriot brewer is in Paris, there would be a conflict that his scribes assured him would doom his kingdom in the world's eyes if he forced his way into Paris earlier than that. However, an "accident" could be arranged with one of his especially trained beer snatcher units (assassins), wherein a conflict would be started that would actual ruin the reputation of the Frenchies! What a wonderful plan! (Of course, all plans seem brilliant when one is drunk) ;)
An embassy is quickly established in Paris, and we find it is being defended by 6 units of Spears, 1 Crusaeder and a member of the royal family. They are also building the Tapestry (38 turns to go), and have wines, stone, Iron, and tar hooked up.

1137 (6) The hated pinkies are now rushing through our territory (We check to make sure they were not carrying a relic!) to whatever ends they have in the East. Build Hannover on the Italian Peninsula. Healing turn (and more beer sampling) So far, the Perfect Beer has not been found! King RJ is much wroth (and soaked in froth!) Do a round of map trading (the Scribes do - RJ is much to busy to deal with this tedious stuff!) The Turks and Abbasids have discovered a concept called "Medicine" which only weak foreigners could possibly find useful! :p

1140 (7) Those treacherous Franks! Look what they were trying to smuggle through our Kingdom!

Obviously a shipment of that elusive Perfect Beer! With a heavy sigh, King RJ has to change his mind about the big plan. The hope was that most of the Frankish forces would be off killing themselves against a foe to the East, while Paris is quickly ransacked by us. This latest intelligence changes things though. The Beer Snatchers are put into place in the road ahead of the Frankish troops. Workers are pulled into the nearest safe city (Frankish troops are everywhere!) And all knights are spaced out to be able to protect cities and counterattack easily. Stuttgart is built on Venice's rubble.

1143 (8) The trap is set.:

and tripped

Gee! I should have checked whether this was against RBCIV rules!? Oops! Anyway. The world is outraged by the ROP rape of the Franks against the peaceful Kingdom of Germany. (And I do mean rape, as the big drawback is 5 of our tiles get pillaged near our core by Frankish spearmen!) On the plus side, our Assassins easily kill the offending Frankish spear!
War breaks out over the entire countryside. (Gee! I hope the hops crops get spared!) Battles too many to mention. Basically, we lost 2 Knights, but killed 8 Crusaders and 4 Spears. We capture the Crown of Thorns near Regensburg! (RJ is severly disappointed that it wasn't the promised shipment of beer).

1146 (9) All those Frankish troops that disappeared into Magyar territory start heading back towards us. 2 more of our tiles got pillaged. One of our Spears at Dorestad gets killed by a Frankish Knight.
We build the Domesday Book! (It won't do us a lot of good until we get some more money in the treasury!)
(BTW - King units cannot pick up relics!)
We continued to kill straggling Frankish units - 3 Spears, 3 Crusaders, and a Wounded Knight were killed of theirs vs 1 Knight of ours. Our entire offensive force is wounded right now though.

1149 (10) Final cleanup stages. We kill 5 French knights, 2 Crusaders and 2 Spears at the cost of two of our own knights. Another drinking buddy for King RJ!

Barbarossa forms the 3'rd Knights of Glory army (not filled). We also capture Ghent from the French with our Knight and Sword Armies.
King RJ dies a tragic death (from liver failure - go figure!) having never tasted the Perfect Beer (Shoulda known the Frenchies wouldn't have had it!) Perhaps the English??? There is only 1 wounded French knight in the East.

We can sell Middle Class for a pretty decent profit now. we could wait for a few more turns though. The French military might is gone now, we might as well take it to them hard and even eliminate them?! The Crown of Throrns should be picked up by the Crusaders which moved on top of it this turn, then stored safely in Regensburg with the other two relics. Tapestry due in 11 turns, although I don't know if we are going to get it because of the Wonder Cascades that went on during my turn. Start on Sheriffs Offices as soon as Divine Right comes in 5 turns. Put one in Regensburg and then immediately start the Robin Hood Wonder. (Sheriffs offices are combined Banks/Police Stations, and also 1/2 factory!) Try to save up to 1000 gold to maximize our Domesday Book. (Wall Street) We are barely leading the Abassids in Victory points, so we can't afford to have much peace time!

PLEASE NOTE! Our armies can put another unit in each! Don't do it until we are sure we are not going to use Galleys to get to the Holy Land. (They can only carry an army with 3 in them).

Take it to the Frenchies!

LMAO during the read with beer in hand. Loved it!. GReat leader RNG and 3 relics now! Need to take out the English relic and then using the knight armies go to Jerusalum for the "elusive perfect beer"! Great read.

I realy liked RJ story. :goodjob:

AD 1152 (1)
King Pokiste The Third woke up on morning with biggest hangover he ever had. :king:
He never understood why makes bier drinking such pain and why is mortality so high within German monarchy. This could not be from amounts of beer he drank every evening or from beer quality.
Suddenly doors of thrown room open and 3 Knights of Glory enter pulling in one resisting man. King knew man well- it was Royal beer master Aloysius Bierkopf.
“What has happened?,” asked king.
“We saw him mixing secretly beer with wine. This is the biggest crime in Holy Roman Empire ,” said one knight.
“And we found written oath, where he promised to Franks king, that he will help to turn Germans into wine drinking nation, “said second knight.
And suddenly king understood, that he was not suffering form hangover at all. This was Franks disease called “gueule de bois” or “pain caused by drinking.”
Aloysius Bierkopf was executed same day and new beer master was appointed. New one was Voldemort Bierdekel, fat man with enormous thrust. And king Pokiste spent his 30 years in throne to make Franks kingdom pay for horrible crime against humanity –mixing beer with wine.

As previous king RJ cleared country from Franks scum, it is our turn to carry dream about Perfect Beer (TM) to Franks.
Started deployment with main target Bologne. After taking this city all forces will meet near Paris. All available forces in east head west. Fill 3 Knights of Glory with 3 elite knights. Assassin sent to disconnect iron.
Heidelburg, Würzburg knight-knight.
Franks knight in alps kills elite sword. Elite knight kills him anyway.
Planes change bit- must take Reims before Paris.
Sell Middle class to abbas for 23gpt, 341g, medicine and WM. We make 124 gpt now.

IT Franks kill two our knights positioned in mountains near Basel. L Franks curragh near Hannover. Possible landing operation.

AD 1155 (2)
Assassin killed by franks knight near Basel. L L We kill 2 knights and spearman
One knight sent to Italy.
As upgrades are so cheap (15g and 45g) upgrade some swords and warriors to crusaders..

I thought we were going to get all 4 relics? I'm also thinking the english may have set sail with thiers. If they haven't it is probably in a harbor city waiting to launch. The AI Burgundians and French were trying to move theirs early. We may have to foregoe the 4th relic if we get over to England, after seafaring, and don't see the relic anywhere. An group of assassins to spy around for it would be nice. Bugsy will probably want to rush some boats when Seafaring comes in and send 4-5 assassins over to recon their units.
