This may be the wackiest game yet from the Variant folks at Realms Beyond. :crazyeyes

Our Objective in this game IS TO LOSE. That's right, we're going to win this (we hope) by "losing" the game!

BIG BROTHER! Game Concept.

We are Romulus, of the Romans. Our objective is to seek out the Lost Tribe of our brother Remus, then bend our entire civiliation to helping him win the game! Like any good Big Brother, we love our Little Brother to death and would do anything for him, including playing second fiddle to him in his hour of glory.

BIG BROTHER! Rules of Play.

1) All Victory Conditions enabled. However, anything OTHER THAN a Space Race victory by our "Little Brother" civ, will be a defeat.

2) First Civ we meet is Little Brother.

3) What Little Brother wants, Little Brother gets.

* Any demands he makes are granted.
* Any deals he offers of his own spontaneity are taken (no matter what!).
* Any tech we acquire that he doesn't have, we offer to him (by the end of our turn, doesn't have to be immediately), then accept the deal he offers us. If we don't like the deal, then just GIVE him the tech.
* Any resources he lacks, we must offer to supply to him. We will take whatever he offers in return. If that's not good enough, just GIVE it to him for 20 turns.
* Any resources we need, we look to Little Brother to supply for us, and pay whatever price he asks (if we can't afford, then we must wait). ONLY if Little Brother does not have any of that resource to offer, are we allowed to look elsewhere for a supply.
* Any and all deals we wish to offer, we must take what he offers in return. Map deals, etc.

4) Little Brother's Birthday! At the end of each player's turn, they must bestow a gift upon our Little Brother. Try not to spoil him! (No giving away cities, nor exorbitant amounts of cash, make it a reasonable gift).

5) Nobody Picks on Our Little Brother.

* Anybody who declares war on our Little Brother, we immediately declare war on them AND MAKE AN EFFORT to go help.
* We do not make peace with the offending civ until Little Brother first makes peace with them.
* If one of Little Brother's cities is captured, we must make an effort to liberate it, then give it back to him. ONE of the enemy's cities must also be razed in retaliation. We do not rest until this is done.
* If Little Brother loses a city, we will found a new one on the same spot and give it to him (unless he takes care of it himself before we can arrive). THREE of the enemy cities must be razed in retaliation! (And we do not rest until it's done).
* We do not sign MPP with Little Brother UNLESS HE ASKS. (We do not want to drag him into any of our wars).
* We sign any Alliance he proposes.

6) We do not pick on anybody who leaves our Little Brother alone, UNLESS they start a spaceship. Anybody who threatens to steal Little Brother's glory by launching sooner, they have to be "roughed up". Get the picture? (Roughed up, not exterminated. OK?) EXCEPTION: anybody who nukes our Little Brother has CHOSEN UNWISELY and shall be obliterated. Genocide. :skull:

7) Nobody pushes us around. We don't cave to threats, ever. (Unless it's Little Brother flexing his muscle, then we go along).

8) If Little Brother declares war on us, we defend ourselves, but never attack his cities. Whatever he wants for peace is OK, too, EXCEPT FOR cities. We don't give him cities. (Even beloved little brothers need some limits set now and then).

9) We want to maintain Gracious relations at all times, if possible, with our Little Brother. (Will take time to get to that point, but once there, we want to stay there).

10) We must build the Intelligence Agency at the first opportunity and plant a spy in every civ (including Little Brother -- hey, we've got to keep tabs on him!) This is so we can monitor the space race and "intervene" if necessary.

11) We must either build, or destroy, the UN. (Unless Little Brother builds it). We want to bury the vote, as our objective is a most glorious space ship launch by our little brother.

12) Obviously, we must prevent any other civ from winning, with all the options on the table!

This is a BACKBURNER GAME for RBD players. Ten day time limit, no skipped turns. Don't sign on if you aren't sure you can find time within ten days tops to play your turn regularly, because the first time you have to be skipped, you're out for good.

Ten turns per player until 1750AD, then five per player.

My baby here, so I'll start it. I'll play as long as it takes to meet another civ AND FIND THEIR CAPITAL. If that takes more than 60 turns, I'll just start over on a new map. After that, ten turns per player (please, the full turns, this one is not optional to play less, nor to play more, as the time limit is very generous. No overtime, no short turns, and no Jester Turn Miscounts ;) ).

Civ: Rome
Difficulty: Monarch
Map Size: Large
Barbarians: Random
Climate, etc: Standard

ROSTER:

Sirian
Cyrene
Jaffa
Charis
smegged
Jester
Carbon ??
Zed

Schnarrd: Alternate in case of dropout. (We'll see how it goes, might squeeze him in there somewhere later on).

Carbon? Are you in?

- Sirian

PS: seems to be a lot of interest for this one. If enough people want to play, I'll organize another Big Brother game as RBD20 so people can get a chance to try it out.

Very neat concept. I always wanted to do something like this with two human players versus deity in a multiplayer civ2 / smac game.

Sounds fascinating. I'd love to play, and with ten days to finish my turns, even I shouldn't have problems getting my turns done on time.

As I'm reading this I'm thinking my response will be...

"I hate you!!! Can't possibly pass this up, you're trying to bury me, just bury me I tell you!" Then I see the time limit

IN!

Charis

PS I must say, far less susceptible to random fate dealing you something you can't deal with than globocop, a lot of the good points of the latter, and an even better story line :hammer:

I'm so in!

Given _TEN WHOLE DAYS_ even I can count to five accurately!

Sounds like a hoot. Best to end up something like RBD 3, where we can be a BIG big brother. It would be hilarious if, since we're giving away so much, we end up as a LITTLE big brother.

Jester

Hmmm.

I seem to have developed a reputation for deviousness.

Works for me .

Ok, I'm in.

--Cy

ps--you are developing "Charis Disease"--I'm going to have to print out the rules....

Wow! This is so bizarre (and yet not so bizarre that it doesn't make sense) that I have to sign up. Good thing the turn limit is 10 days, I'll probably need them!

Heh, good concept, should make for a good read. Only problem is that with a ten day time limit this game will still be going next year some time, lol.. :)

Cy: Hey, well. You know how it goes. :o I was deliberately aiming with this one to land an "AMZ" flavor, just with enough functional symmetry to keep me happy while our friend frolicks to heart's delight out in left field. But don't worry, it's not a trend. I'll keep the rules more simple in other projects. :)

So... Charis wants to play this one? I'm shocked! Well, OK, I'm not a bit shocked. I'm glad the concept was well received and that I'm not hated for burying him. :)

Let the wackiness get underway! :crazyeyes

Here's praying that we... LOSE!

4000BC: Rome Founded on a river in a peaceful valley. Lots of majestic peaks nearby, filled to the brim with gems, gems and more gems! The minor tribe right next to us teaches us Pottery! I set research into Ceremonial Burial.

3750BC: Our first warrior is trained and sent west in search of the Lost Tribe.

3550BC: Our second warrior is trained and sent east in search of the Lost Tribe. Because we lack for any food bonus tiles, and we have a luxury right here on hand, I opt to start a granary. (Rare move for me, but I'm scared to death it won't ever get built unless I build it now -- and no, I do not intend for us to build the Pyramids. We must leave those available to our Little Brother! We may attempt any other wonders, though, perhaps Lighthouse, because it's Commercial like we are, or the Great Wall because it is Militaristic).

3350BC: Our first warrior spots a minor tribe, they teach us The Wheel! We have found the west coast, and there are furs in this region! Our warrior will turn south.

3250BC: Our second warrior has reached the east coast.

3150BC: Our second warrior meets a hostile minor tribe. Our forces are attacked, but fight off the enemy and promote to elite! (One hp lost, must rest a bit). Our elite will head north along the coast. Our first warrior spots horses to the south.

3000BC: More horses to the north. One day we shall tame these beasts and ride them in search of Remus!

2900BC: Our north warrior spots silks! Many many silks! (Wow, lots of luxuries in this area). Still no sign of the Lost Tribe, though. Where oh where are the people of our Little Brother???

2850BC: Granary completed in Rome. With all of our warriors out scouting and still many lands close to home unexplored, we start training an archer group, due in just three turns.

2710BC: Archer training completed, we start outfitting settlers.

2550BC: Our southbound warrior is attacked by barbarians! King Romulas panicks at the thought of losing our scout party. Barbarians are known to pick at the edges of civilization, and so far from Rome, that can't be OUR edge they are picking at. We must be near to finding our Little Brother! Fortunately, our warrior party fends off the enemy, losing one hp. A friendly native village is revealed to have been under the yoke of this evil barbarian group (they came from the goody hut! At least that's where they were when they attacked us).

STILL 2550BC: Rome grows to size 4! Our gems are connected (just in time). Our first settler is due next turn! Our scouts to the north spot a minor village up there as well.

2510BC: Our scouts in the north share the tale of our desperate search for our lost brothers. They have heard no news, but are cooperative and teach us Masonry. In the south, no news there either, but they do pay us 25 gold to deal with the hostile barbarian tribe next door. Seeing this to be the homeland of those who so wickedly attacked us, we agree to rout them out. Our settlers are outfitted and head north along the road into the mountains.

2470BC: Our warriors attack the barbarian village, disperse it, and gather another 25 gold, confiscating their wealth in payment for their treachery against us. (Nobody, but nobody pushes us around. Well, except for our Little Brother, if he's being playful or maybe even just in a foul mood for the day). Our settler comes to the end of the mountain range and spies a valley below, just north of Rome, on the river, where wheat grows. Our elite warriors in the north spot trouble, a roaming band of barbarians. Good thing we trained that archer group! Can't be having barbarians moving against an undefended Rome.

2430BC: Our settler arrives at the destination along the river, adjacent to fields of wheat. Our northern party fortifies in the mountains to prepare for the barbarian attack. In the south, we make contact with a party of warriors. Our Long Lost Brothers? Can it be?

We make peace with these brave and healthy men, learn that they call themselves "French". Our warriors whisper to one another about this. Are these the ones? Are these the sons of Remus? At the mention of the name Remus, a hush comes over the French. They ask if we know of the Great Father? Know of him? KNOW OF HIM??? We are the sons of his brother Romulus! At long last we are reunited with the people of...

OUR LITTLE SISTER?!?!?!!!   Joanie? Why hello there, Dearie!

2430BC (cont): Our brothers of the French tribe inform us that they wish to be our friends! (Well of course they do. We're brothers!) Our warriors are overjoyed! In celebration, we teach our Little Sister's people the secrets of the Wheel and of Ceremonial Burial. They offer to teach us about Bronze Working in return, but we assure them that we've almost got that figured out, and really, it's not important. They offer every last gold coin in their treasury (which ain't much) and we're grateful, but truly, we cannot accept that. We could not leave our Little Sister penniless. What matters is that we are together again! The twins, once torn apart, shall stand united now for all time. The French are happy and introduce us to a most glorious luxury: wine! Whether or not they will have enough wines to sell us on a regular basis remains to be seen, but we enjoy a most glorious evening of wine and song. As a final gesture of goodwill, we give the French a gift of ten sacks of gold, a personal gesture of affection from Romulus to his Little Sister. :D

:king: :love2: :queen:

2390BC: Our warriors continue south, in search of the ancestral home of Remus, where he settled his half of our people after the Great Divide split us into two halves. We understand that this place is called "Paris". Our settlers at home found the city of Veii.

2310BC: The land between Rome and France is a huge, endless swamp. It seems unlikely that our peoples will be crowding one another any time soon. Spices are found on Joanie's side of the swamp. We will inform her of this discovery at the first opportunity (when we figure out how to draw and trade maps). One day, perhaps, we shall happily buy fine French spices at the market rate. We decide to send our archers out to explore the area south of Rome.

2270BC: More horses are spotted, just south of Rome this time. (If Joanie needs ponies, we could give her a circus full!)

2230BC: Our archers attack a roaming band of barbarians in the hills! We are victorious but lose some men. A minor tribe is spotted out on the plain.

2190BC: Barbarians galore! Barbarian parties approach our wounded archer unit, and our unescorted settler unit. There is no defense in Rome, at the moment, either, so production is swapped to warrior, due next turn. Oh yeah, and our elite warriors, moving toward our beleaguered settler, locate one of the barb camps a short distance west of Rome.

2150BC: Our new warrior party leaves Rome along the road and heads into the mountains, to try to distract the enemy war party and allow the settler to escape. Our now-healed archer attacks the enemy warrior, losing the first two hps (and causing me to shout at my monitor) but then gets his act together and beats the barbarians, promoting to veteran!

2110BC: Our new warriors fortify in the mountains, while the settlers run away to the north. We had HOPED to found our next city further out, just beyond the furs, but plans have suddenly changed. Our settlers spot a small lake and fields of cattle, so we'll head there instead. Our archers must rest and recuperate, they fortify. Our elite warriors ransack a barbarian camp, earning 25 gold.

2070BC: Our scouting party in the south has reached the borders of France! :jump: Our warrior in the mountains is attacked. He wins handily, but another group of barbarians is right behind the first. (Wow, lots of them up here, we need to get more settlements going). Antium is founded on a hill beside the lake.

2030BC: The other barbarian near our settler attacks. Our forces win again, and promote to veteran. Our archer learns Horseback Riding (!) from the minor tribe!

1990BC: Rome completes a barracks, starts to train a spearman, due in only three turns. After that, perhaps another settler. Normally I'd skip the spearman, but there are way too many barbarians running loose.

1950BC: Our warrior party in France climbs a mountain and finds themselves looking down on a vast, irrigated flood plain, at the heart of which lies the golden city of Remus: Paris!

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. We have located our Little Sister's home, and now will never be separated from her again, nor lose track of her and our brothers, the French people. This took 45 turns? Hey, not bad, 15 to spare!

END OF PLAYER TURN = TIME TO CELEBRATE JOANIE'S BIRTHDAY! :bday:

We offer knowledge of Horseback Riding and our Little Sister offers 70 sacks of gold in exchange. What a marvelously fair deal! We happily accept. (It would not do to insult her offer by refusing, when she can clearly afford to make a fair deal with us. We must not undercut the pride and self-sufficiency of our Little Sister by being a jackass when she's trying to stand on her own two feet!)

Then, for birthday gift, we present another ten sacks of gold. Joanie is delighted, we are happy. It feels good to be a Big Brother!

We researched Ceremonial Burial and Bronze Working, with Iron research in progress. Goody huts gave us the rest of the first column, plus Horseback Riding. No contact with other civs (besides our Little Sister) as yet. Nor for her, either. We appear to be on the north end of a continent. There may be connections in the fog of the few areas I didn't get around to exploring, but the lack of other contacts wandering into our lands makes that seem less likely. I have prepared a dotmap based on my initial findings.

Wooooooooooooo!! This is so fitting! I was thinking yesterday, it would be so fitting if the little 'brother' was France! How glorious!! M'eer astronauts!!!! :hammer:

So I immediately scrolled down on your post to cut to the chase. This makes my day :D

Charis

Purple Dots: TOP priority sites. There's one near each city, so send the next settlers from each city to the purple dot nearest that city. I think we should forget the early wonders and expand across our lands before Joanie wanders up here and starts grabbing. We love our Little Sister, but we don't need her parked in our bedroom over here, that would interfere with our regular business.

Orange Dots: URGENT strategic sites that also happen to be fabulously rich. Horses, cows, lots of grass, some hills. This is probably the region our FP will be built in, so we should make these high priority.

Green Dots: highly fertile sites all close to our capital. If not for strategic concerns, these would take priority over orange, but in this case I think we need to push south a bit first, make sure we get our half of the pie, so to speak, and that may even be a tiny choke point two tiles wide next to the one orange down there. (If not, it's still a narrow region).

Yellow Dots: All GOOD sites, but wait until more urgent sites have been settled.

Red Dots: LOW priority sites, future projects we'll get around to some day. Probably.

White Dot: Four tiles unclaimed in the middle of our heartland, would be worth snagging with a mini-city in the far distant future because it's right next to the capital. NON-priority.

Cyrene <<<< up now
Jaffa <<<< on deck
Charis <<<< made his day ;)

Cy: I know you don't like the start, but we're counting on you. Unless you decide on a better plan, build some settlers and "head for the purple" :) You can play 15 to even out the turns, or play 10 and stick Jaffa with 15. Your choice.

I never realized the RBD group was based in France!!! It seems like every game you guys end up with Joanie as a neighbor.

Or maybe Sirian's computer just has a thing for pink.

The long-lost little sister...(or is it Little Sister?)

At least it wasn't Shaka -- you'd be fighting all the time.

LOVE the idea.

Here is the location of the Reunion! Also a first peek into France...
