RBP 10 - The Spanish Explorers - Team A

Hmm, I thought I was going to get off easy this round, building stock exchanges and buying techs. Wrong! I should have knows *that* wasn't going to happen.

(0) 1450 AD - We are researching communism? OK, looking back I see that this was very clearly mentioned in your report, but I really don't see anything about why we would possible want communism, even though we're religious. Even if we need to swap out of democracy, we're a nice, compact little civ, and I just can't see that communism would help in any situation. Sure, we could build police stations, but would their upkeep even pay for the lower corruption in our case? I know that I'm risking :splat: , but I put our lone scientist back to "real" work.

OK, we have 14 cities, 18 inf, 8 cav, 16 spears, and assorted other units. We're paying 79 gpt upkeep, eek! Well, if we're paying for them, we might as well have the best, so I upgrade 2 cannons. Barcelona and Madrid have entertainers who could be collecting taxes. Their labor plus the fired scientist gives us another 10 gpt.

BT - Rome wants to renew lux deal (I'd been hoping to renegotiate all luzes in 1 turn), and they agree to pay us slightly more than they'd been paying before- 18 gpt now!

Madrid intelligence - artillery
Murcia coal - stock
Valencia factory - stock

(1) 1455 AD - Clean up some pollution. I decide not to build a coal plant at Valencia and other places, because we're close enough to electronics that we could just build hydro in a few turns anyway. Plus, gold just may be more essential to us than shields at the moment.

The Romans move 2 battleships into our territory.

I buy flight from the Iro for 3800 gold. Then, I sell it to the Zulu for mass production, 40 gold, and 5. Now, we lack amphibious war (Rome and Iro have) and electronics (just Rome). Yes, I thought about a 3-for-1 buying electronics, but I figured we'd never be able to afford to pay cash @ 2nd before something else fell through.

Our cities are growing. I renegotiate our spice deal with the Iro for silks and 2 got. Seville swapped from coal to stock exchange. Madrid, Toledo, Santiago to commercial dock.

BT - Barcelona wall street - commercial dock. Jaen bank - stock (yes, even instead of a factory, vetoable if you disagree, of course!). Roman ships move back out of our territory.

(2) 1460 AD - We're at +838 gpt now. Zulu now have amphibious war + gpt. I trade them spices for 34 gpt, since I think we need that more than oil or rubber.

(3) 1465 Note that Hi has cancelled MPP with Zulu.

BT - ROME DECLARES WAR ON US! :aargh: [punch]

We do manage to kill 3 cavs and their MDI on our territory between turns, but they take Logrono and 96 gold. I'm wondering if we should have just disbanded that city earlier so that we wouldn't look so much like a target. Too late to worry about that now, I guess!

Madrid dock - arty
Rioting in Seville (we lost two inported lux from Rome). I scroll ahead to prevent rioting at other cities. I don't think that's "instant military", what do you guys think?
Toldeo dock - cav
Santiago dock - cav

(4) 1470 AD - I'm thinking that it's possible that Rome just wanted Logrono, and there's a chance they won't come to the mainland. I don't want to buy alliances, so that we can get out of war quickly, but I don't want Rome to buy them, either. I hope you guys don't mind, but I signed us up for the next best thing- MPP with Iro and Zulu. Hopefully they won't get into a war with one another in the next 20 turns now. It costs about 400 gold for both MPP's.

I buy rubber from the Zulu for 520 gold (shoot, probably could have gone gpt for that). Seville needs 2 clowns without those Roman luxes! Noboady else has any available to buy. I go to 10% lux tax, and for 43 gold we only need one specialist in Casearaugusta (Madrid gets one too, but just because it's out of tiles). If we stayed at 0% lux, we'd need a clown or more everywhere, so at 43 gpt it sounds good.

I upgrade some spears with the cash we have on hand.

BT- Zulu and Iro declare on Rome. I had always remembered MPP's as triggering 20 turn alliances when they're triggered, but when it gets to my turn they're both ar war with Rome, and nobody has an alliance. That's probably the best case scenario.

Rome sends bombers to bomb us.

Barcelona dock - airport. Vitoria bank - stock. Our palace expands.

(5) 1475 AD - Use our artillery to bombard the Roman battleship by Jaen. Valencia swaps to an ironclad- due exactly in 1. Rebuild some of our cut RR tiles. Santiago swapped to inf from cav to minimize waste. Casesaraugustus galleon N to maybe bring reinforcements when we can spare some.

BT - Wounded Roman battleship heads for home. Rome lands some 1 infantry and 4 tanks SE of Barcelona. At least I covered all the high ground, so they have to land on a grassland.

Madrid art - inf. Seville stock - art. Toledo cav - cav. Valencia clad - art.

(6) 1480 AD - Use 5 artillery to bomb Roman units on our island. The artillery do very well, which, if one were to believe that means we're due for a streak the other way (I'm decidedly undecided on that issue, fwiw), means that our luck might not hold for our attack.

The plural of anecdote is not evidence, but the pRNG really wasn't on our side this time.

Our attack goes badly, even vs. 1 and 2 hp units. Most of our cavalry is destroyed, but I keep trying, because I'd much rather fight those tanks on defense than offense. At the end, rhe Romans have a 2/5 elite tank, a 1/4 tank, and a 1/4 infantry. Of course, they can heal just fine in our territory, too. Still, at least I dont see any other transports at the moment.

BT - Mass bombing. A sub kills our northern galleon. I'd actually forgotten it was exposed like that, and hadn't seen anything coming that would have reminded me to hide it.

Oh, and here come the Zulu! :hammer: Well, here come 3 yellow ironclads, anyway. Two are right by Sartander, so I suppose they're after the sub? Can they see those too? Santiago inf - inf

(7) 1485 AD - Bombard and kill that pesky infantry with our cav. I try a 1 hp tank with a conquistador, and win! We're now in our golden age! [dance] I'd upgraded a warrior to a guerilla at some point, and I use that to kill the last tank. There are no more Roman units on our island.

Barcelona is starving. I irrigate and RR the bombed cattle tile for a quick fix. War weariness hits, and hits hard. I need to move lux to 20% so that Madrid doesn't starve.

BT - Massive bombing. Romans send some battleships. I see another transport, but it seems to be headed south for now. The Zulu battle the subs, and I see an Iro clad heading SE.

Madrid inf - inf. Barcelona airport - cav (no oil). Toledo cav - inf. We lose gems and wines!

(8) 1490 AD - Renegotiate gems and wines with Shaka for 35 gpt. Send 2 infantry south to Caesaraugustus, and bomb some Roman battleships.

BT - Rome is now bombing faster than I can rebuild. I am protecting the resources, except for the spices which must be out of their range. Zulus sink a Roman battleship I'd wounded, with their ironclad! The other wounded ones head home. That transport that had been heading south decides to come and unload. This time, it's 3 infantry, 4 cav, and 1 guerilla. Two of the cavs are elite.

Madrid inf - inf. Barc inf - cav. Seville art - inf. Murcia art - inf. Santiago inf - inf. Zarazoga can - inf. (just the way the sheilds are working infantry seems to make sense).

(9) 1485 AD - Not much success with our artillery this time. I mostly try to reinforce around Zarazoga rather than to attack at so much of a disadvantage.

Caesataugusta's reinforcements have arrived, and some weak units have been brought up for upgrading.

I buy electronics from the Iro for 3000 gold. The show much go on, after all! We're just 3 techs she of the UN, but I suppose that's only a fantasy at this point. Still, Rome's trying to build it in London, which might not be his best choice. If we are going to make at least an effort at the UN, we might want to think about a prebuild. I'm just not sure how much fission would cost to buy once we get there.

BT - OH NO! The Romans decide to attack an infantry of mine, fortified on grassland. They win, and that's when I realized that that one infantry tile was what was separating Roman units from my workers. Shoot! We now have almost no workers. It's probably a good idea to identify a city that could build them, but I don't know where.

Madrid inf - inf. Toledo inf - inf. Caesaraugusta riots. Santander bank - rax. Maybe we could rush it and upgrade if we needed to, or swap to infra if we get out of this war soon.

(10) 1500 AD - Kill 3 Roman cavs on our lands, including both elite ones. War Weariness is now up to 46%. Believe me, people of Spain, I want the war to end as much as you do! Rome still won't talk, and I think this is the 6th turn of our war.

I move the lux to 30% to cover the new war weariness. It may even be better at 40%. :( It seems like Rome should talk soon, although we may want to pop back into Monarchy for a bit and take care of this WW stuff.

That's about it. There's a bunch of Roman units on our sandbar, and we're just about our of cavs and workers. But, we are in our golden age, and Rome might talk soon.

Also, now we have a better idea of who Hi would vote for!

Make Love, Not War!

Griselda - just played

Wow, after being lulled by centuries of quiet building, things are heating up all of a sudden. Not good...

I'm not sure if keeping Logrono, which originally should have been a beachhead for a military operation (way back when Rome wasn't the monster it is now...), was really a mistake. It has provided a lot of income since then, although the hit in war weariness because of losing it might nullify this now.

Scrolling ahead to prevent riots seems to be a common practice both here and the Epics, so I never thought about it being exploitative...

I'm afraid signing the MPPs was not the best idea here - we are now locked in war for the full set of 20 turns. Even if Caesar is willing to talk soon, if we make peace and he attacks one of our allies (and he sure will!), we're back into the war again. Maybe an alliance would have been better - our rep is already stained, so backing out too early wouldn't have been a problem. On the other hand, I think we will be able to survive these 20 turns, so the only problem is that we will have to drop out of democracy. I think I will try to switch to republic instead of monarchy, we'll see if that works.
It could get ugly if he uses marines against our island cities...

On the bright side, I don't think that Caesar will hold an election now! But if he does, yes, I think we will have to vote for him...ouch! :wallbash:

I have the game, wish me luck... :help:

-Kylearan

Erm...*clears throat* Well, I...I had some very exciting ten turns, and, uh, some unfinished business, so, *cough*, I played an extra turn...

But I think you won't mind after you've read what happened! And there happened a lot...

The first thing I did was waking up all the various troops scattered around, and got rid of that Roman cavalry near Barcelona, producing our first elite cavalry. I noticed that my concern about a marine attack on Santander or Caesaraugusta was unfounded, as they have infantry already. :goodjob:

I survey our troops and notice we have only 7 artillery! That is not nearly enough for a pre-tank war, so nearly all city productions are changed to artillery, except Madrid who is changed from infantry to cavalry which it can produce one per turn. I swap some tiles, and end my preturn.

The Roman stack of three infantry and one guerilla splits up, and is then annihilated with the help of two newly produced artillery, promoting one more cavalry to elite. Since five workers are also not nearly enough, several cities who are starving anyway produce workers before returning to artillery.

On the second turn, Caesar talks again with us and would make peace for 40 gold, but I decline because of our MPPs. With all the starving cities and our reduced income, I ponder about switching to republic, but decide to remain in democracy because of the increased worker speed. Otherwise, bombing would kill us: Artillery manouverability is the only thing keeping us alive!

Then something strange happens: Caesar and Shaka make peace, and we no longer have a MPP with Shaka! Why, how? Does that mean we could make peace, too, and no longer have our MPP with Hia? On the same turn, Rome lands four infantry and two cavalry, but thanks to my artillery rush our troops shred them on the same turn without taking casualties.

Now Rome would make peace straight up, but I decide against it. As long as we can defend ourself in democracy, I will let this war continue despite the loss of income. Why? Leader fishing, of course!

During a quiet turn, our still increasing number of artillery units scare off several battleships, and our one and only ironclad even manages to sink one who escorted a transport! On the next turn, it even manages to kill the transport itself, which sounds contrary to my leader fishing idea, but there was a second transport en route to us, and we wouldn't have been able to kill 16 units at once. We lose the clad then, but it had been more than worth its shields!

And indeed, the other transport lands a stack of infantry and tanks, full eight units. They all die, and we lose only one cav, but no great leader appears. Behold the power of artillery! I then remember that this war would be the perfect opportunity to plant a spy in Rome, and curse myself for not thinking about this earlier. I try, but he's caught. I think I've read somewhere that you have to wait 2-4 rounds after a failed attempt, so I'll do this.

Rome is now in communism, nice. Now he would pay us for peace (Logrono must not have been worth much...tell that our peaceniks, please!), but I decline again, as I can see another transport. Another eight units land, I quote a film from Peter Jackson, shouting "suck my spinning steel, ****head!", and...

rbp10a-v1.jpg

Yes! The cavalry is named "Leader of the UN" in a sudden display of optimism, and Cordoba moves to the safety of Barcelona, waiting. I could sue for peace now, but I like to wait one more turn to try to plant another spy, so another eight tanks are annihilated by our glorious troops, while our growing number of workers are still busy repairing the damage the bombers do each turn. And then Fortuna smiles on us, and we have an agent in Rome!

So I dial up Caesar and get a discount on Radio - our WM and 2930 gold, and then buy incense and ivory from him for our spices and 180 gold at diplo price. I didn't know it at that time, but I should have made this deal at miser! This would haunt me next turn, but read on.

I then notice that we still have a MPP with Hia! Argh. So I guess we won't be at peace for long, I hope at least for some turns. Setting the lux slider back to zero, I marvel at our glorious income of 1254 gpt! That's really amazing - all self-earned, without AI deals.

And since we have over 5000 gold in the bank, and both Shaka and Hia are modern, I decide to go modern as well and buy motorized transportation from Hia for 2329 gold, @miser this time. Because...

We're modern.

We have an unused leader sitting around.

We have over 3000 gold in the bank.

And Caesar was stupid enough to switch to communism while building the UN.

So... I dial up the CIA and look what a safe steal attempt would cost us...

...and nearly get a heart attack, as we lack only 82 gold! Argh. Who knows, maybe the UN will be finished next turn? So I get desperate and take a deep look into our cities. In case the attempt fails, what is no longer needed to continue playing? I find some libraries, the airport (we can rebuild it easily!) and two barracks at Pamplona (a city producing only 6spt...) and Santander (our island city). They all get sold, and...

...we still lack one gold piece. ONE. So I get desperate again, and offer Shaka and Caesar our world map, and yes, they both offer one gold piece for it! [dance] So we have some extra gold to spend on ice cream or something. :)

I notice it's my tenth turn, but...it could end here, so I will play one extra turn and see how it turns out. I do a safe steal attempt, and... it succeeds! We now know Fission! Cordoba is woken up and told to rush the UN at once. I dial up Shaka and give him Fission for a new MPP, making him gracious. I then hit next turn, and...the MPP with the Iros drag us into the war again. But: We build the UN!

Do we want to hold elections now? Yes, sure, go ahead! Much to my surprise, it's only Caesar and us. I vote for us, cross my fingers, mumble an ancient voodoo spell only known to Germany civ3-players who have an insane amount of luck, and...

Victory! VICTORY! VICTORY :band:

I had believed in a space victory if we only could survive Rome's attack, but a diplomatic victory? Thanks to all for this great game! Not only has this been my first SG, it also had turned out to be one for me to remember, with a very exciting finish. Thanks Griselda for setting this up! Before I go to sleep (and then, in the morning, take a look at the other games, teasing them...), here's a final shot of our small island:

And the final save, just hit next turn and vote correctly to win...
Lead the world!

Good night,

-Kylearan

Way to go!!!

When I saw that we were at war, I was hoping for a golden age boost to catch us up tech wise. The great leader and UN was a BIg bonus. :band:

I gues we have joined the ranks of other SG's to prove it isn't over until it's over.

Thanks to Griselda for putting this together and Dwip and Kylearan for the great team work.

:band:

Shock. Awe. Amazement.

Good job, y'all! Very exciting game to have watched and played in - and my first Deity and SG wins rolled into one! :egypt:

Quite the roller coaster there at the end, too... Rome declares war, and here's me thinking "NOOOOO! We're gonna die, and we were so close!" And then we're surviving, and then we get the leader...can we do it? Wait, there's the vote screen....YES!

And there was much hopping up and down in my seat.

One thing, though. Seems that Civ didn't want to put the score into my HOF for some reason, but there's no reason why us creative Epics folks can't fix that, so if you need to, stick this line into your HighScores.cv3 file:

Ponce_de_Leon 18 4411 5 3 1

So, what's next? :)

[edit]

And looks like we can finally see what those spammers in B were up to, hrm? ;)

[/edit]

Some more things about the game...

Rome was leading the top 5 city list, having built the pyramids, hanging gardens, Sun Tzu's, Sistine, Newton's, Hoover and Manhatten! Caesar has also built Magellan's, Copernicus', Smith's, Universal Suffrage and ToE. Very impressive! He also had four parts of the space ship already produced and one more in production. His FP was in Antium, by the way.

What I have forgotten to mention is that we suddenly had oil near Toledo near the end of my turns.

In hindsight, Rome declaring war on us was what saved us: No war, no leader, no UN. The same can be said for the MPPs Gris' signed: I'm not sure I would have stayed in the war for so long if we only would have had an alliance, so the MPPs have been a good idea after all. :) We had incredible luck with the leader, though, and while the leader concept is fun and added a lot of excitement for me especially in this game, it's somewhat broken and unbalanced that they can rush great wonders.

What I still don't understand is why Shaka was able to pull out of our MPP, and how?

And why was it only Caesar and us on the ballot, and not the Zulus? I always thought the two largest civs were in, plus maybe the builder of the UN, but it seems I'm wrong?

-Kylearan

Well done everyone, well done!

Thanks to the team for hanging in there, and also for the fun.

The reason I'd been building infantry, fwiw, was to minimize sheild waste. I guess if we didn't need more infantry, that was wasting shields anyway!

Assuming we can trust the Civilopedia more readily than we can trust Diablo's character screen, (cut n' paste follows)

There are always two, and sometimes three, candidates. To be a candidate in an election a civilization must, either

* have built the UN.
* control at least 25% of the world's territory.
* control at least 25% of the world's population.

If only one civilization is eligible, then the second candidate is the civilization with the largest population. (end cut n; paste)

Oh, and it won't automatically put this game in the Hall of Fame because it was loaded from a scenario file. We all know that being Conquistador Ponce de Leon made the game so much easier, right?

-Griselda

PS- I loaded the final save and sold everything so I could investigate London, and found out that Rome still had 18 turns to go on the UN at that point. It's still *much* better to be safe than sorry, though, and who knows when their next leader would have popped?

Thanks Gris for quoting the civilopedia, somehow I hadn't thought about looking there... :crazyeye: But I'm still confused. How and when can there be three candidates?

Nice to know London needed another 18 turns to complete the UN, that would have saved me a lot of sweat. But I saw a size 12 city, with hills and mountains, already building it for forever... Well, Caesar screw up on this one. No more :worship: , but [punch] instead!

-Kylearan

Wow! Now that I finally got a chance to read all of the thread--I scanned it briefly after Rome lauched on us--great game all!

We were trying for the same type of miracle, and came up a few units short. Congratulations!

I think we hurt ourselves by helping Rome eliminate all the other civs but Hiawatha. We also would had less of a desparation attempt if we had stolen fission and used our prebuild, which would have beaten Rome.

Ah well--them's the breaks.

Gris--as far as the map goes--yeah, this was a tough map to play on diety, but that's just fine by me. I think both teams made the most of our little island.

On last thing--I think I am firmly in Sirian's court about the power of commercial. The kind of gpt that both teams were able to generate is amazing. I was able to do the same type of thing with Rome in Epic 26, and another spanish game I am playing has the same type of impact.

Fun game! :goodjob: on the concept and execution Gris.
