RBTS6B - Finally Ready for Noble! (Team B)

Turn 0 - With no discussion I figure it will be pretty much business as usual - try and take some cities off Hannibal and Issy. Eventually we may need to consider the Incan front as well, but for now I think we can make some progress vs. Hannibal.

The biggest concern IMHO is the fact that Monty has accumulated land and population numbers so close to ours. As I indicated above we'll need to hold off on drafting for a bit.

Turn 1 - Monty captures Tacape during the interturn. This is actually bad, as it will help his numbers even more. Steel comes in, but for now our production is mainly tied down in wealth generation. I choose Steam Power for the next tech for the levees, which will help our production a lot.

Otherwise we are in good shape - lots more naval units have been built or will soon finish, and about 4 galleons worth of troops are on the move. At the end of the turn I take Utica for no losses(I actually chanced a rifle at 77% odds and THEN suicided the treb because we're low on siege units.

Cannons will be nice, but we can't make them very quickly.

Turn 2 - First the good news - our galleon survives a double-caravel attack. Of course I had already unloaded the troops, but a victory is a victory. Now the very good news:

Issy has renounced Hannibal!

And finally the extraordinary good news:

She capitulates to us.

Issy gets a nice trade deal:

Gunpowder and Replaceable Parts for her map. I also upgrade our Medic III sword GG to a free Rifle - after all he will still defend after all of the combat rifles, so he should be safer overall.

Turn 3 - Fate bounces the other way:

Huyana declares on us. He didn't vassalize to anyone, so I guess this is good old fashioned AI dogpiling. I won't make peace with Hannibal unless Huyana appears to be a real threat though. By the way, I looked at the diplo levels last turn and he was only at cautious. Rare for an AI who isn't normally a nutjob to declare at cautious when we have more power.

Turn 4 - Our army prepared to take Hannibal's next city. We loose a galleon attacking a carevel at 77% (I didn't want it to be able to hit a loaded Galleon on an adjacent tile). I clean up the Caravel with our wounded Galleon. Huyana moves hit stack adjacent to Issy's city.

Hopefully we will bombard long enough for me to get some more rifles inside.

Turn 5 - We kill part of Huyanas stack which decides to attack. Monty's pop number rises above 50%! That city gifting isn't looking so good now :)

Turn 6 - Barcelona is captured by Huyana. Things don't look too good for Issy. Hannibal's city of Sicca is captured for no losses.

Turn 7 - The Economy is not good by the way. We have cash for four turns at zero percent research. Because I feel I won't be able to avoid striking, I turn even our cities which will finish units within 4 turns to wealth, which raises us to 10 turns of cash left. That rate is probably sustainable with city capturing.

Turn 8 - I've begun sending galleons to Monty's west coast rather than back home, since we don't have too many troops coming over, and we might want to use the galleons to move our offensive stacks around.

Turn 9 - One of the courthouses in Issy's land comes online, and suddenly we're making money again. I will shift a few cities with nearly-completed units back into production.

Turn 10 - Ok, status report- Our main attacking stack is moving up Hannibal's coast.

We have a frigate that can start bombarding the coastal cities as well. Hannibal has a small stack outside Utica, but it would have to get very luck to take the city. We have six units in Huyana's land, and can perhaps retake Barcelona if Monty or Issy can help. We also have a galleon and frigate bombarding Huyana's coastal in preparation for an eventual capture. The only thing I have not done yet this turn is check Hannibal for capitulation - surely he will eventually.

Finally, lets keep Monty happy. He has risen to above 50% in both categories, but for now he seems content to remain a vassal.

EDIT: Pics are up now. Also, two other tasks that need doing: We need to gift more tech to Issy, which I forgot to do, and we have a GG on our continent's west coast. I would probably make a treb into a cannon for super bombard, but we could also make a super-cav from our knight or turn an obsolete unit into a rifle.

Good point about razing, but I'm worried that even if we have enough land for domination once everything is planted and our borders pop, we will give our vassals too much land to settled. Now that's fine if they stay our vassals, but I fear them breaking away. Perhaps that is more rare than we think however, since Monty has stayed loyal.

I've never had a vassal break away but I'm still not sure if Monty will or not.

Unfortunately as the blind lead the blind we risk a war with the most aggressive AI at tech parity and with no tile improvements :)

Do we win a conquest victory if we vassalize everyone left alive? I don't think we do. But on the other hand if we do vassalize Huyana and Hannibal, I think we're about guaranteed to hit domination. Even if our own land is only half the size of the other continent, 33% + (1/2*66%) still equals enough land for domination as long as all the tiles are settled, right?

Do we win a conquest victory if we vassalize everyone left alive?

Definitely YES.

OK, seems like a long time since I got the game.
Looking around and having some comments.
- I don't like the places of our settlers. We want to grab as many land tiles as possible, so coastal spot or spots near existing culutural borders are less optimal. I will reshuffle a bit.
- Do we really have a Great General siting around since 23 turns???
- Both Monty (for having grown) and Isabella (for having lost territory) can theoretically break free.
- And I see, we are again hiring spy specialists ....
- We have two double move units that can be helpful for pillaging. One of them is stuck on that stupid Spanish island Valencia, lets get him to the front.

Turn 2:
Pillaging towns is the way to fuel our advance. It is worth the occasional detour.
I split the attacking stack to go for Hannibals capital and Hippo at the same time.

Turn 3:
Pillaging, pillaging, pillaging.
On turn 1 I asked Monty to attack Barcelona and now he shows up with a sizeable force.

Turn 5:
A great scientist is born in Cahokia. I am actually considering using him for a golden age. Surely we won't need much science.
I will see how this turn goes to decide.
The attack on Hippo starts and another Great General is born, conveniently on the contested continent.

Turn 6:
Hippo falls. And I noticed that it sits on a silver mine. Nice.

Turn 7:
Monty takes Barcelona. Well done. I now set him onto a border Incan city.

Turn 8:
One unit short of taking Carthago.
Monty has 330 cash, which I get from him for chemistry.

Turn 9:
Carthago falls, but Hannibal does not want to talk capitulation yet. Urrgh.

Turn 10:
I plan to take on the Carthagian city of Leptis next. It will take a while to get the sieg units to attack that city on a hill.
But then I noticed that Hannibal is willing to part with that size 10 city for 10 turns of peace.
That is quite a deal, as it comes complete with massive population and land.
Now, the city goes into starvation naturally, even before I have to reshuffle the tiles. But since it is not a forced take over, we have full cultural influence and can draft straight away. :goodjob:

Way forward:
- Keep on attacking that dreaded Incan city. I promoted one rifle to have more punch. We can also use some of the freed units from the Carthago front to help out pushing HC.
- There is a Great General on the galleon outside Ollontayabo. Use him to promote the city attackers, once they are around.
- Don't draft anymore on the home continent, especially not Mesa Verde, as that pop point is important to keep Monty below 50%.
- In the end I left the Great Scientist untouched. How about using him to initiate a Golden Age when we decide to settle all our spacefillers, to help border pops?
- Next player should make a battle plan to take out Hannibal for good.
- Keep on pillaging! Especially the good tiles around captured cities to give them something to work.
- Hippo, Carthago need drafting after they come out of starvation, since we cannot sustain the population.
- Leptis needs drafting next turn.

Here is the save.
Next up is Ozbenno.

I check out Hannibal's diplomacy and if I select vassalisation he says "we're afraid of your enemies" which meas he probably would vassalise if we weren't at war with Huayna so I fear we got peace too early with him. No worries, onwards and all that, except our troops are on the wrong side of the continent to do anything quickly.

Steam Power comes in and (as I assume we're on an infantry drive) Economics selected. There is coal near the capital, great!!

A GS is born and merged.

A vote to transfer Toledo (currently owned by Monty) to Izzy is enthusiastically supported and suceeds. This knocks Monty down a bit.

We take Corihuaya...

Our finances go +ve at zero so I settle a city back home. Monty is now less than 50% in land and pop.

BTW, you can't draft in captured cities as you have to have 10% culture ownership, so unless we're in slavery (which we're not) they just starve down.

We take Tiwanku and its shrine, we're still +ve so another city back home settled.

Carthage goes into revolt, we really should have sorted Hannibal out once and for all as we'll lose this city.

Last turn I attack Michu Pichu but the RNGod lost me twomrifles at good odds. The troops I do take out though is enough to convince Huayna to capitulate.

This puts us at 55.4%. The peace with Hannibal still holds. We should get into position, declare war, settle all the cities back home and coast to domination or conquest, whichever comes first. I also gifted Huayna back his cities as this gives us more land (it was many turns before they would come out of revolt).

Just get some defenders in the three border cities (probably close to enough in the area) and start attacking from the east. Direct our three vassals to attack cities as well. Monty had a fairly large stack near Cuzco.

If the finances tank, swap civics as the anarchy will save us (slavery is good).

From what I read, things look good.
You right of course about the draft of captured cities, I was confused with Leptis, which was gifted and could be drafted straight away.
The peace lasts for 10 turns, and gave us Leptis for free.
It would have taken roughly the same amount of turns to bring the siege in position and take Leptis by force. So I think getting peace was ok.
We can cancel the current peace deal any time we want.
I take it Hadrumetum and the new capital are the next targets.

I did not anticipate HC to capitulate so early! Excellent job.

Was the GS you merged the one left over from my turnset?
What about the plan to use him for checking out the game with a golden age? Would have helped our new cities with building culture and pushing our borders.

But then again, we will win this game by conquest when we vassal Hannibal, so no need to put further strain on our economy with new cities on the homeland.

And please get rid of the spy specialists in Hippo, Stone City & Moundville!

I don't expect to get the game again. Our economy is good for 10 turns of peace or longer with the loot from the upcoming war.
Alternatively we can always trade HC some tech for his 300+ gold.

How about any one of Olodune, Atlas or Sunrise garbs it in the next 12 hours? Otherwise I will take it.
It is a bit tedium but we are so close to finish this off. So lets keep on going.

We Won!

Turn 0 things look good, we have a HUGE stack, so this should be easy, but it will take a few turns to position units

Here we go

and NO casualties, but Hannibal is still not talking

And the Second city goes down, will Hannibal talk .....

Will he accept....... we hit enter

Ooops finished a tech ;)

and we won!!!!!!

Like i said earlier I do not know the vassal dynamics, but i read in Mostly Harmless' post (i think) that if you vassalize everyone you win. We never even used the spare settlers.

Here is the gnp, you can see we did well for a while, til we started expanding and drafting

Here is the power of the draft!!!

crop yield, no surprises

Demographics, not to shabby for no tile improvements :D

And for all those out there that might wonder we were...............................................................................................................................................................................

Thanks guys for playing, this one was fun. Time to read the other team's thread

Excellent work team, I couldn't have asked for a better experience for my first captaining attempt. My reflexions:

-Sullla's games normally draw a lot of interest, and he immediately grabbed some top notch players. That said, we stepped up to the challenge of identical settings, and I suspect our performance was very competitive. I thought our team played very well.
-Other than my occasional tardiness, the game ran incredibly smoothly. I'm sure the lurkers liked our 24-hour turn around time in the early game.
-The comments were very solid throughout. Almost every turnset there was discussion about where we need to be heading, and that makes playing much easier.
-Avoiding the micromanagement of late-game tile improvements and worker actions made those mop-up turns a lot more fun.
-Before the first turns were even played Atlas and I had discussed what we thought would be the ideal strategy via our multiplayer Teamspeak server. I think Atlas's plan was quite vindicated - Great Library, Liberalism towards Muskets, Draft like hell.
-I think seizing a continent and killing 2 civs with one Dog Soldier has to rank up there in the civ mythology. It isn't Spain on the Lake in RB1, but it's still pretty cool.

I had a wonderful time all, thanks to the great team and the friendly lurkers. Now let's go see how our 1868 Conquest date compares to Team A.
