how do you ally in a war?

and yes having a high pop is good, but then you can just put that pop on tiles instead of specs. Not every tile is ideal for a farm, but some are ideal for other things.
I can't think of any situations where specialists would be useful other than there being something wrong with the surrounding tiles and needing to compensate.

edit: does giving gifts like $$$ improve relations?

You declare war on civ1 that is already in war with civ2. You and civ2 become allies. Or did you mean something else?

Yes, but only to a certain degree. The cap is +4. Just like in vanilla.

Hey everyone, sorry for a long silence on my part. Firstly, I want to say that I'm as sad as you are for still not having 3.5 installer, but unfortunately I've never built one myself, and I don't have enough time right now to figure it out. I may at some point in future just provide an archive file instead, but since 3.5 is the last major version I kinda wanted it to have an actual installer. That brings us to the second point, which is 3.5 almost definitely being the last major version. I will likely tinker a bit post-3.5, but that will almost 100% consist of just adding/tweaking art assets and maybe fixing bugs if any are found. No major (and likely even minor) new features will be added to RI going forward, as I'm the only team member even remotely active these days, and I won't be doing that.

On an unrelated note, it is very heartwarming to see an active community here, with players helping other players figure stuff out and discussing actively. Thanks all!

Yes, it's a fully workable religion, specifically there for scenarios. Yes, it works the same way as other religions.

Yes, I'd love to have that - but, as per above, this won't be happening, as nobody is going to implement that.

I think I've fixed that a while ago.

Resource placement algorithms are a mystery to me. I could never find the code responsible to have a look at it.

I wouldn't trust AI with the exploration tweaks you suggest. And I'm not a comfortable enough coder to add the options you request unfortunately.

Thanks for the kind words, but the development of RI is mostly through. Enjoy the final product (at least when/if 3.5 installer drops). :)

That's unusual. Will need more details of where and how you're installing.

    Nope, you couldn't.

Doesn't seem like a finished SVN checkout to me. How big is your folder size? Also, did you pack your art assets (might have made a mistake while doing that as well)?

    No new features incoming. :)

oh **** what can you tell me about that relations improvement thing? :o

also im curious why you like your settings that way.

And I take it the current version of the mod is the final version then?

There are three major ways to improve relations.
    1) Become an ally. Depending on an ally's leader the bonuses may vary. This bonus can linger even if the war is over.
    2) Have the same religion. Usually the highest bonus available. Doesn't work in quite a lot of situations: lack of religion, some civics etc.
    3) Sell resources. Relations increase slowly, however you don't have to choose who to upset. This bonus lingers too after you stopped trading.
There are also things like bribing, fulfilling conditions of random events, having favorite civics of certain leaders, yielding to demands etc.

Such settings give me the most 'realistic' feel of replaying history plus the more civs in play the better is diversity. I also tinker with geography (RI_planet_generator): increase the number of mountain ridges to create some blocks, increase humidity (number of plants), pull apart continents (for renascence contact).

Thank you so much for working on this mod, Walter. I've been playing it for months and everything looks pretty solid.

I'm so happy with the current state of RI that I don't think I need any new feature, you guys really did a great job on everything.

    Thank you.

That brings up a question I've been meaning to ask. How hard a task is it to make scenario specific units, techs or religions available for normal game. I tend not to play the scenarios, so I'll never get to see Orthodoxy or the Golden Horde in my games. Which is a shame imo, I get that they may not play well with how a normal game works, but if there was a quick and easy way to make mod them in I'd be very happy if someone could give me a pointer. So I can at least try enabling them myself.

Problem solved - where was key.

I forgot that I had picked up the Steam copy of Civ 4 in 2018, and I have Steam and non-Steam Civ 4 BTS folders in the C drive. So I was installing Realism Invictus to the non-Steam Civ 4 BTS folder, which of course resulted in massive problems when turning on Civ 4 - because the default copy that loaded was the Steam copy. Once my Realism Invictus copy could actually load to the title screen, the second problem solved itself. I suspect the second problem was an issue with the size of the save file for a game in the Industrial Era on a Large Map... maybe trying to load a save file straight from the installer was causing a crash once the save file reached a certain size.

I'm no expert on making Install packages either, but I have patched plenty of mods, why can't you just provide a zip file of the changes so we can copy and paste? rather than having to use SVN?
I realise now why my son and I where getting desyncs trying to play this mod a year or so ago, it was because I used the SVN to update, and when my son expressed an interest in playing multiplayer, I neglected to use SVN on his.

I had already deleted the files again but it turns out I have the same issues with 3.4, installed with the full setup .exe. Folder size is 1.84 GB.

I'll also echo johncade's sentiment: why not just release a zip?

Hi I am a long time civ player who just now got to the forums. I see this is a very popular mod, could anybody give me some highlights as to what I can expect? Primarily: new important units, gameplay/rule changes etc. just an overview would be helpful.

    Welcome!
There is a manual (PDF file) in the mod's Documentation folder (I assumed you had already installed it). If that doesn't answer your questions feel free to ask here. Also here's a short list of major changes.

I have managed to update using svn to version 5218, but I cannot start the game, giving me an error on startup detailed below.

    Failed loading XML file

Not sure if anyone caught this yet but the Modern Physics tech quote is by David Hilbert not David Hilber.

I'm using the latest full release, 3.4 IIRC.

I'm a bit confused, my son and I have been trying to play a direct IP pitboss game and we cannot even get to the Medieval era without getting desyncs, we have tried everything that can be found on the net in regards to this issue, we are also using a build after the pitboss fix.
When these desync occur, it tells us that the player with the different number needs to relog, however both systems numbers are identical, and even when we both relog, the very next turn we get another desync with identical numbers, all firewalls are down.

Anyway, the confusing part is while on one site (here) it states: Do not rename the folder of the mod to anything other than "Realism Invictus"
While on the main Realism site it states for updating via SVN: (IMPORTANT: the name of the target folder should be "Realism", as otherwise stuff might not work correctly)

We currently have the mod name as "Realism" on both systems and our local pitboss server, yet the information between sites is conflicting, which is correct?

The latest release of the mod should be in the Realism Invictus folder.
The SVN version, if one uses it, is located in the Realism folder, coexistent -- that is, I have both folders. At least, that's how it is for me.

(A general observation, not specifically related to the post above: Sometimes I get the impression reading posts here that not everyone has understood that the SVN version is not really the mod, the SVN is just a "working copy", a work in progress, but it's made available so we could sort of be its beta testers. If you're new, or if you're having unresolvable issues, why not just play the latest stable release?

A second observation considers the World Map Scenario, the popularity of which seems to have hijacked the fact that the mod is designed for random maps, and people expect that the game mechanics should mainly be directed at balancing any particular issues that rise solely in the World map, which is not how it is.

And yet a third one: If you've just begun to play this mod, welcome! But keep in mind that the difficulty levels are quite different to what you may have been used to. Rough rule of thumb: Realism difficulty level == Vanilla BTS difficulty + 2 (or slightly less). Also, your experience might be like trying to predict the weather sometimes. Given nearly identical initial settings, and committing to roughly same choices, might still give you wildly different game experiences between two different games. So while feedback is great, remember it's a chaotic system, small changes snowball over time. It takes many games to get an idea of true trends.)

After using the SVN and understanding it, it is quite good, I have installed an earlier build using SVN and it works fine, single player works without any issues, it's only the multiplayer that is causing us grief.

I first found Invictus just over a year ago and flogged it to death on single player, though even back then we could not play multiplayer for the desyncs, but Civ is a game I come back to every so often, and considering that 5 does not support multiplayer mods, and 6 makes my eyes bleed while making me think of rainbows and unicorns, 4 is the go, and after Invictus I cannot go back to vanilla.

We play random maps always, and the reason we were looking for an updated version was because of the multiplayer desyncs as 3.4 is not stable for multiplayer (unless somebody can vouch for completing a multiplayer game), i've been pretty thorough with troubleshooting on our server that we have pitboss installed, the OOS values are always identical, so the clients are not desyncing, and even when we do both logout and back in, the OOS is back up on the very next turn, and as you can see from our screenshot, we were only about 110 turns into the game, I'll also add that we did not have desync issues with vanilla.

We would be quite happy to make our setup available for testing Pitboss, I am also a tester for another mod called DEI for Rome 2.

The current SVN version will be the final major version of RI as 3.5, whenever it is released.

"How hard" is relative to one's ability to mod Civ4. In general, it is rather trivial if you know where to look and what to do. In case of Orthodoxy all you really need is to specify a non-placeholder founding tech, for instance.

The short answer is "I don't really care for releases". While it is rather heartwarming to see people having fun with RI, it was never created as a "consumer product", but rather as a pet project for own use. The actual releasing was usually handled by another guy on our team, while I would only spend some time creating new assets (icons, etc.). Generally speaking, since a mod such as ours is a hobby rather than a job, all team members are working on stuff they like/find fun to do. Figuring out how to make an installer and even just spending several hours packing stuff and preparing an archive is no fun for me, and I am very reluctant to spend time on that. And since I'm the only person who's even semi-actively contributing to RI... That said, I will find enough time (and enthusiasm) at some point, but it may still be some months from now.

Might it just be a hardware issue? RI (unlike vanilla Civ 4) will not work on integrated GPU chipsets (and as a consequence, on many laptops).

So did you figure this one out? From your later posts, it seems like you are actually running SVN, which implies you fixed that.

    Thanks, fixed.

That is sad to hear. OOS errors are one of the things I can't reliably test for, since I don't have anyone to set an actual multiplayer with. My best guess would be to blame some of the post-3.4 functionality I added, since I'm not a very good python coder. Fortunately, all of it is toggleable. If you'd be willing to test it out a bit, you could try toggling off religion shock, barbarian civ and revolutions and see if any of that prevents OOS.

    Hi Walter
Once I figured out how to use the SVN it is a very handy tool, the issue quite possibly remains however as I downloaded a build four versions lower than the last hoping to avoid the error, now that I'm more proficient with SVN I'll try the last build when I finish my current game.
I understand where you are coming from in regards to supporting the mod, I am part of a team called DEI for Rome 2, and I had my years of late nights testing and tweaking, but eventually you get burned out or life does not give ample time for such hobbies.
Anyway, I thank you for the time you have given, as this mod in my opinion is the best of the Civ series, and I been playing Civ since I was installing Civ 1 with a 1.44mb floppy disk onto a 386DX40 :)
