Really Hope There's an Undo Button in Civ7

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have much impact at all since if people want to undo, they can already save scum.

I can see it making game of the month harder to police, but other than that I'm surprised it is being treated as a big deal either way...

Reviews and articles that I've linked to before in this thread. Here, here, and here and that was just a quick search on one site. Some additional searching gets you. . . a begrudging like here, isn't mentioned at all in this review. Kotaku has high praise for the game, here and here, but doesn't mention the undo button. It gets a shout out here ("something I never knew I needed") and, I'm not looking through his videos for a comment, but PotatoMcWhiskey also has high praise for the undo button. At worst, the undo button has so little impact on the game it isn't worth mentioning and some people think so highly of it that they want it become a standard feature in more games. I'm not just making stuff up. If you find any reviews, articles or whatever that have an unfavorable view of the undo button, feel free to post them.
She may be biased but she's clearly proud of the feature:

What's the point of creating an account in order to post a bit of "advice" done with ChatGPT?
Immediately jumped out to me as a ChatGPT output too. It also totally misses the point of the discussion in this thread.

I’m wondering about that weird hidden link in one of the periods in the post, too. Strange.

I had the same thought and mentioned this in Staff chat, didn't catch the hidden link sorry. Will spam ban them now.

I actually tested ChatGPT with this question just to see and it assured me Civ VI had an undo button lol.

I mean one option that might satisfy everyone is, instead of spending the dev effort to make an undo button, spend the dev effort to making loading from a save as fast as possible...

The button is a link within a period in one of the entries in the Civilopedia. Try opening up every Civilopedia page and clicking each period!

(this is a joke)

Why is an Undo button so wanted when there are already plenty of ways to do what an undo button can do?
Feels like an undo button would simply be a waste of developer time
The appeal of an Undo button is to rewind the last action made with no delay, or very short waiting time. Reloading might achieve the same result, but it takes way more time (up to 7-8 minutes in my case). Reloading also need you to redo all the actions made during that turn to recover to the point you were in, which can be quite tedious.

The consequences are quite clear: it put way less stress on the player part, as any errors or missclicks can be removed and free of any consequences. It allows a more fast-paced play since the players can be less vigilant on the consequences of their plays, therefore allowing them to not keep a high focus level at all times. This addition would make the game more enjoyable for a non-negligeable part of the players, and may even attract new players to the fanbase.

That is why the Undo button is highly requested.

Play a game with an undo button and then play the same type of game but without an undo button and it becomes immediately obvious why undo buttons are better than the alternatives, like reloading an autosave.

I have mixed feelings about having an undo button. On one hand, it is very convenient for correcting mis-clicks, trying out multiple unit moves without having to do all the terrain calculations, and so on. On the other, it will be very tempting to abuse. Take for instance your very first turn, when choosing which direction to scout. With an undo button, the most efficient thing to do would be to take a sneak peak at every direction before deciding. The same goes for combat, you can basically test run everything, and only commit once you have a desirable result. I get that you can already do this with saving and loading, but it is much less convenient, and doesn't feel like the normal way to play. I also get that I could just not use it, but I think that if it is present, I will feel compelled to take advantage of it.

I say put it in as an option for those who want it. For my own part, what I would really want is the opposite: I want an ironman mode, and I want achievements and victories to track that it was accomplished with that mode active. Stellaris kind of does this (you actually don't get achievements unless it's in ironman), and for me, it just makes every decision more engaging when there's no option to get a do-over.

The one time I feel that an undo button would be justified is the case where you make a long movement (typically sea movement) and find you end up next to an enemy, whereas you should have stopped when the enemy came into sight. An undo button would correct a situation that better game implementation would have obviated in the first place.
