Really stupid question for music-lovers.

I'm tired of people asking me what genre of music I like. I have no answer because I have no idea.
Here are my favorite bands:

Pearl Jam
Green Day
Andrew W.K.
Jets To Brazil
Sublime(Raggae [the songs I like])
Hot Water Music(Punk)

No trolling/flamming allowed. Its a simple question for you music gurus out there.

alternative covers a lot of stuff so it's usually a safe bet.

Thats a very limited view you have of music. I would have flipped that around in most cases and said if its popular its usually crap.

hot water music- i consider them alternative but could be punk

I don't know about the others.

"oh you like Jets to Brazil? green day, too? hmmmmyou must be into Emo and Punk. oh wait, Pearl Jam? you must be some kind of poser. how can you like punk emo and grunge? I'm into Indie Rock . but my friends are into Post-Punk, Emo, and Noise Rock. "

(the thing is, all the bands mentioned above are simply ROCK AND ROLL.)

i'd say you like ROCK MUSIC.

I know there probably is a better name than just "oldies".

I like to listen to the Beatles, the Zombies, Beach Boys, Young Rascals, and Three Dog Night.

That genre (of which I'm a big fan myself too) is usually called Classic Rock.

I think fitting groups into categories is great. It's the best way to describe a band without someone hearing it. Also, if a band feels "confined" to a certain genre that people bestowed upon them, they don't perceive themselves very well. I think it is very cool when a rock and roll band puts some kind of savage jazz in their tune. That does more to break the stereo-type then the cliche: "We're not <enter genre here>, we're rock and roll."
I'm not trying to take the piss Laughing Gull, I understand your point, but people are too concerned with genres they are put in. The reason that they are concerned is that often times they don't want to admit how much the sound like a certain group of bands. They pretend to be more original and feel that any genre they are associated with takes away from their reputation for originality.

Yeah, but putting Jimi Hendrix together with Eric Clapton under "Classic Rock" is itself a bit confining, don't you think?

Maybe "genres" are a good idea for classifying here-today-gone-tomorrow cookie cutter pop bands, but the real artists cross lines far too often to easily be pigeonholed.

tupac and biggie is my favorites.

my second favorites is 50 Cent and I like some of the others (not all of them). Ja Rule wuz punked and half by 50, I used to like him but not as much now...

EDIT: OH YEAH, AND MY QUEEN B, LIL KIM! I love he cuz her eyes, a$$, b00bs and all that stuff that comes wit tha package, she got it all. Whoever thinks differently needs to be slapped.
