@Whosit: The point I was trying to make was that Cats and axman is the only way to defeat the Romans

There is no "only way" to defeat the Romans. There's good ways and bad ways.

Wrong. Preats are almost invicnible. when you lack the production to take on Rome (like we do) the only way to win is ax and cat

Though I hope the chat will help clean things up, however.

We need axe cats AND swords to take on Rome. (swords for archers)

But that's unlikely since the pressing issue ATM is to keep Rome from grabbing more land.

And, we need to build forts in the Pyrenees NOW. Why hasn't anyone thought of that?!

I haven't heard much about forts, so I don't think they're that useful, but I'm not one to be talking. Ask Whosit, he'll know. :p

Praets are nowhere near invincible. Sure, they are VERY strong, and i keep them around until i start seeing riflemen when i play as rome. BUT, there are ways to beat them. Your way is one, but a VERY risky one. What if they have archers? Horse archers? Chariots? You need a counter to those, and swordsmen and take care of them all.

Forts give only a 25% bonus to a defender. Its not much. The equivalent of a hill. I dont think they would be of much use.

That's kind of the whole point of Civ 4's wide array of units. In Civ 3, you could just build up a stack of one unit and destroy the world with it. However, in Civ 4, you need many different types of units.

So in a sense, Arya and Ilduce, you're both wrong, and you're both right. We need Swordsmen AND Axemen AND Cats AND Horse Archers...

Since Arya double posted, I feel like double posting as well. A hill is a strong place to be! Sometimes, I'm willing to sacrifice a resource to settle on a hill (in my more warmongerish games)

Thats what said....i would only like to prioritize swodsmen since they are versatile, and able to fill many roles. Axes might be good against praets, but thats reall the only thing they are good against most of the time. Besides regular sworsdmen.

I hate settling on hills. It stops me from building a mine there.

And a fort MIGHT be worth it...but i think the other infra in Iberia is more pressing. Maybe if a worker has nothing to do, but otherwise iw ill not request any forts. I would rather hold the forest and the hill. If only the hills had forests on them...
