- You're Celtia and you want Guerilla 3 other than on Gallic Swordsmen

- You're PRO and/or have Stone, are running a GLH economy, have Engineering and won't touch Economics for a while

- A massive AI stack is heading for the city and you need to buy a few more turns for your own stack to intervene

- You're running an espionage economy and the Castles will be made of win

- You've got the Best Defence quest

- Ragnar just got Astronomy and your coastal city is a ways off 40% defence

- Future Wall Street city wants a chance at +1 gold

- You've got no strategic resources and Monty lives next door

- They've pushed your borders right back to your city and it's vulnerable to a surprise attack

What else?

You're Spain and you need Citadels for your CR3 Cannons?

You're playing as Spain and will be building castles to get the extra bonus for your siege

EDIT: Cross-post!

Great minds build alike... :goodjob:

Also, I think my main reason for building Walls is due to the many, many, MANY hours of my formative years spent playing Civ2. I'm scared that the huge, bald, fearsome general will scream at me about the city defenses being as thin as parchment. "Build City WALLS!"

/flashback

^ That and the Elvis advisor singing during Anarchy!! Those two are burned into my psyche for the rest of my days.

I generally build walls if I'm going to build a castle afterwards for the additional protection/trade route along boarder cities.

I only build walls on one side of my cities. Facing whichever direction enemy spies are most likely to appear. We all know the AI ain't smart.

Playing an older version of BTS or per-BTS and abusing wall ultra gold generation via ultimate whipping bug+modifiers (stone, protective, OR, etc.).

Yeah. Quick, build a CityWall. A massive stack is approaching--filled with riflemen that is.:mischief:

Reason I build wall..
>>to prevent barbarians from entering my borders.
>>+100% GG emergence.
>>build an early Scotland Yard (while my city has only mud bricks and huts)

In the early game pre-currency they provide a small but noticeable increase in power rating without the unit maintenance associated with military units: might help with deterring potential DoWs. Same goes with barracks and a few military UBs.

Deterring the AI to attack you via soldier count (power ratio is the ratio of soldier counts) doesn't work well except on abusing. Many AI's, you need twice their soldier counts. Unless being on a lower level, that is too costly and better work on diplo or some defenses.

Are you thinking the Great Wall?

Only reason I would ever ever ever consider building a wall is in the rare chance I get attack I'll whip a wall quick so the AI stupidly sits there trying to bombard the defense down while I reinforce.

Otherwise, walls are a complete utter waste of hammers

Well, I have one city that juts out into my opponents territory and I am building walls there and preparing to fill it with my best defenders. My plan is to declare and let him wreck his best stack on it.

So sometimes your game looks something like this?

I'll just echo the above point. Although in my experience they are still a hard building to justify.

This was perhaps the most fun thing to do with a PRO leader, I would whip the production into a wonder. :D

If you're PRO and have stone, you can put it up in one turn?

I dunno, I got nothing here. I never build them.

When you're being attacked by a big stack that includes very few catapults, and you need to buy time.

When I have stone and running OR, might build it to get overflow to get chance to whip forge next turn after getting MC.. situational but used few times (and actually I like also how it looks on map) :)
