Recommend me some good crime fiction

And by good crime fiction I mean *good*. Not Janet Evanovich.

I can easily go to the bookstore and pick up Elmore Leonard or Dennis Lehane or any of the other major pulp crime writers. I am interested in learning about some great writers that may not be so well known, and who are actually good writers. I should also point out that I am more interested in stand alone novels than series.
