If you are just having your aircraft sitting round doing nothing (especially in Peace time) then you can give them a recon mission. This basically means that they fly over a square, and look at the AIs units in and around it. It is good in spotting in advance if the AI is moving massive numbers of troops towards you for an attack.

You can also use it to see who is at war with whom, what level of advancement the AI units are at etc etc.

By doing this, the units appear on the map, just as if you had stolen plans for where the enemies units are?
