Hey I want to know how I can record a perfectly legal music stream.

I tried right-clicking the link and I got some .asx file that seems to just link to the stream again.

How can I record this as an mp3 (or any other regular music file)?

Absolutely no experience with streaming software / standard / protocol / whatever.

But I remember one day I saw a file type that is mapped to Real One Player. It connects to the internet to get the video/audio and play after some buffering.

I don't remember what extension it has, but I noticed its tiny file size.

And I opened the file in *NOTEPAD*.

And the URL was stored in PLAIN TEXT in the file. The file had nothing more - just the URL.

I've never inspected any ASX files though

Well I've recorded file streams before, and it was very simple - just right-click and say "Save As".

But this time if I right-click it saves as an .asx file. And when you open up the .asx file it seems to load the stream - I'm pretty sure it does, because the file is very small.

Could it be that this free music site just wants to screw me and not let me save teh music for later use?

give a link to the song you want.

It would be a mess, but you could always send your sound card output to a stereo, record it, and loop it back into the input jack on your sound card. I think WMP and RP will record the input jack.

Or you could do it the old-fashioned way, capture the sound port. You can do that from Volume Control->Options->Propreties->Recording-> Check Select on the "Line In" collumn. Then use any program to record the output.

@ ainwood: That program only records 60 seconds at a time in the free trial. I hate that.

@ Turner: Yeah well...I'm not insane. ;)

@ Aphex: Hmm...I'll have to look at that...sounds confusing but it doesn't require any wires...;)

EDIT: Problem is I need a program to record it...would GoldWave do that? ;)

I'm wanting to know if you can somehow save the music from launch.yahoo.com to your pc, and then burn them to a cd. BTW, DO NOT go to lyricsdomain.com and download mp3's there. I just got rid of a virus from that site.:(

Certainly. Just be sure to select maximum quality. You can compress later to an mp3 if you want to save space.

Edit:
@blackhalo
Check my post above. You can record anything that comes out of your speakers.

I once used this to record a long text with a text-to-speech program onto a disk.

Well I figured out how to do it, I think, but its not working.

I opened up Volume Control, went to Record, put it on Line In, and made sure the volume wasn't muted or too low or anything.

Then I opened up GoldWave, made a new file, set it to CD Audio quality.

Then I opened up the stream in Windows Media and began playing it, and started recording right after.

I did about a 10 second test, and when I played back the recorded file in GoldWave, there was silence...

:hmm:

My point seems to be related, so I'll ask my question here...

My brother wants to record a radio show whilst he's out. He's asked me to show him how to do it off the internet. The station in question is http://www.beat106.co.uk. It has a link to the station as it's broadcasting, and what I want to do is record that as it's playing. The only seemingly-good freeware prog I've found is StreamRipper 32, but that requires a URL and Beat 106's link is a javascript pop-up. How can I record this?
