Very surprised this one hasn't been brought up yet...

But what do people think of the allegations that we are mistreating people in the detention centres here?

Think of it this way... they come here, to australia from War-torn and royally fukked up places like Afghanistan and Indonesia (sorry if any of you are from there!) which I can understand, yeah Austrlia would hold a lot of hope for them...

but really, what do they expect? To be given a house, set up with a benefit fund and not expected to do anything else?

Fukk that shiit! We give them more food than they have seen in months, we give them warm, comfortable accomodation, they have entertainment, TV's, VCR's ans computers to use...

and what do they do? Yep, lets have a hunger strike and see if we can get something even better for free... yeah, lets drink some detergent and top it with 100 panadol and see if we can get some MORE sympathy....

instead of congratulating us on our handling of the situation, the UN are INVESTIGATING us...! this is a load of soggy horsecrap!

I have had fairly mixed opinions on John Howards ideas of running our wonderful country before but on this subject I love to shake his hand, he's a great man that everyone should get off the back of and support him in NOT just outright killing these bounder jumpers as many other countries would for making such actions... at least without proper passports and documentation... Is it not correct that the American and US border is guarded by patrols with weapons? What happens when someone ignores their warnings about use of force etc and still ignores these warnings and cross those lines?

Thats exactly what is hapening here.. and no, we aren't killing them, we aren't torturing them, and we are treating them VERY well and giving them brand new, good accomodation...

Give me some feedback on this total load of crap that is annoying the hell outta me!!!

Now that's some hyperbolic demagoguery that would make any fascist proud, Hitler, er er er, Morghasshk.

I actually thought of you when I heard this being discussed a few days ago.

But I wouldn't have expected EVEN YOU to come out in favor of shooting refugees from a war torn land. Or did I misunderstand....was kind of hard to get the jist of your point, there.

But I take it this Jon Howard guy is advocating this murder, huh? Nice....how many nuts there actually support him?

How do you draw that conclusion from the above statement?

In case you missed it the important phrase was:

"support him in NOT just outright killing these bounder jumpers as many other countries would for making such actions.."

In case you are stil unclear- no our prime minister is NOT advocating murder of refugees.

Errrm, what planet are you on dude?

You obviously didn't read what I'd written or did not comprehend it.

I was merely pointing out our actions compared to others preventative measures...

ie: we have NOT shot and killed people, illegally entering our country, without papers or documentation.

Instead we have houses them, fed them and provided them with a quality of life that was before unheard of for them.

Instead of being grateful for this they are trying to draw attention to themselves by having hunger strikes and drinking detergents... But this, of course, must be our fault...

I don't support shooting refugees, only pointing out that this would be the norm in many other countries...

John howard is doing a great job trying to quell these idiotic rumours that WE are mistreating these refugees...

get over yourself mate and get the facts straight...
Your beginning to sound like you don't know your head from your arse...

I'm sorry.....

I'm speaking f*cking english here.....

I'll do a direct copy.....

"he's a great man that everyone should get off the back of and support him in NOT just outright killing these bounder jumpers as many other countries would for making such actions"

Now, THAT sentence tells me that he wants people to support him in NOT just killing them, but in something else as well. Once again, that's in English...

My question to that would be, "What else does he advocate, in ADDITION to killing them? Understand?

Regardless, I was also VERY clear in saying, "OR DID I MISUNDERSTAND"!!!!!! WTF did you NOT understand abou THAT?

Sheesh.....

So anyway, which F*ckin' planet are YOU from....dude?

I was hoping that you, or anyone else, would gather from my question,

"Or did I misunderstand....was kind of hard to get the jist of your point, there."

.....that I was unsure as to his exact meaning. Thus the got damned question marks.

Did I give you too much credit?

Your final question "Nice. How many nuts out there actually support him?" Lead me to believe that you had jumped from query to conclusion- sorry if that's not the case.

When I heard on the radio that the refugees were going on a hunger strike I couldn't stop laughing for about a minute.
"We can't get enough food, so we're starving ourselves!"

I think it is ridiculous that Australia should take heat for not handing these refugees their life on a silver platter when they arrive. Once again, it is a case of the U.N. treating democratic, free nations to a double standard or treating people. If the U.N. is so concerened about these refugees why don't they stop the nations that are forcing them to flee their homes; or administer the refugee camps themselves.

The U.S. border patrol is not allowed to fire on people for simply crossing the border. Worse than that, the land owners out there aren't allowed to shoot at people trampling through their property. I think that is a travesty when people are being told they are not allowed to force unwanted people off their property.

in sweden we have a lovely thing called right of common access. that means that you are allow to pass through others property, so you can go for a nice walk in the forest even if the soil you are on belongs to someone else.:king:

First of all, no one is proposing shooting, gassing or garrotting these individuals.
Although Morgasshk's interpretation was quite interesting, it was not enough to make this committed fascist;) fully proud. For that, we require my own words and proper interpretation.

These individuals are not refugees. They are illegal entrants. As such, they are placed in comfortable and humane confinement whilst their applications for refugee status are examined and processed.
However, they have been told otherwise by the people smugglers who brought them here, and by some fringe political groups and activists.

They are thus of the mindset that they are somehow intrinsicly entitled to conditionless entry into the country, material support and virtual carte blanche. This sets a precedent for unrestricted immigration for anyone who has the means, which is not a message that the nation chooses to project with very large and unstable neighbours.

There simply isn't the space or resources to deal with a true flood of refugees, immigrants et al. Not that this is happening at the moment, but the precedent cannot be set that Australia is an easy and soft target.

It is a fairly simple and acceptable notion that the arbiters of who enters the country should be its elected government, being the agents of the popular will. All that is going on is that this will is being exercised.
The vast majority of the populace, as illustrated by election results, the policies of both major political parties, and the public mood, does not want unrestricted access to Australia by anyone.

There is, as I have said, a vocal minority of activists, ranging from revolutionary socialists on the dole to some religious groups, who want to change this policy and mood, but they have been ultimately unsuccessful due to their extremism, browbeating and shame tactics.

The actions of the illegal entrants in the detention centres have also aroused a great deal of disgust in the community - the sewing together of lips, deliberate self mutilation, rioting and assault of detention centre personnel, arson, and perhaps most heinous of all, the manipulation of children as instruments of political protest (ie, children being encouraged to enter suicide pacts and mutilate themselves)

These tactics have not worked, as these individuals have come to the conclusion that their attempt at blackmail on the Australian government and people was manifestly ineffective. They will be processed in due course, and if they are genuine refugees, they will be treated as such.
If not, they will be repatriated in due course.

They were brought here with false beliefs and impressions by heartless criminals under false pretences. It is these scum who deserve the dire attention and condemnation of the world.

And as for shaking John Howard's hand over the matter, I would not touch that reprehensible subversive Communist with a bargepole.

;)

 It sure is a crazy world ;what happened to the old aussie generosity? These people leave hell,go through hell, and then get shoved into a Concentration Camp;which I suppose you could describe as....:flamedevi HELL!
[dance] [dance]

P.S. like, you know, where would we be if the old mate Capt. COOK;(an early real estate developer)had got chucked in "ye olde Concentration Campe"!

To label the detention centres concentration camps is a blatant and outright fabrication. The conditions there are quite humane, if not 5 star hotel style, but they are better than those enjoyed by many Australian citizens.
To use such a label is also an insult to the memory of those who perished in the real concentration camps.

I am proud to have you as a fellow Aussie Simon. You have a great way with words that makes me look like a jumbled-up twit! :)

At least people who look at this thread should be able to make some sense of what I was, cough, trying to say.

Concentration Camps? Yeah, right buddy... Are we are forcing these guys to do hard labour, shaving their heads and feeding them mouldy gruel for one meal a day. Were any of your relatives a guest of these wonderful Concentration Camps in the 40's?

If so you wouldn't even bother comparing anything that is remotely Australian to the hell that the POW's from WW2 went through...

Morgasshk

The Aussie's probably have the poop on this one but from what I read they're protesting deportment. Not the conditions in at the processing centre. I could be wrong though.

I see nothing wrong with the UN inspecting, it can only keep the honest, honest. As to shooting people crossing the Mexican-American border. I, as an American, canNOT condone murder for trespassing. Round them up and send them back. Yes it costs money, but killing people is not right, unless they bodily threaten us.

I would like to add my two cents to this topic. For a long time Australia had banned the entry of all non white people. Why are we even surprised that they are kicking up this refugee dust. Why cant Aussies let these refugees be part of their community and give them a chance to contribute to society instead of locking them up in Refugee camps??

A lot of times in history, if refugees and people displaced by war are treated well by the country who takes them in, it is the country which benefits. Take US for example. The Statue of Liberty was a powerful symbol of freedom for several thousand refugees and emigrants who are now an integral part of the US. WHy cant Oz follow the same example??

You sure it is worth two cents?

Your inference of inherent racism in regards to the White Australia policy was both insulting and pathetic. It was a policy of quite a long time ago, one that was not only practiced by Australia, and has nothing to do with the current situation. Yet it is dug up in order to tar the whole nation with the brush of racism. You even got the details of the policy wrong.

Let me expand on the situation for your information, so that you may avoid such ill informed claptrap in the future. Australia does take in refugees, plenty of them. We have a history of doing so (the Vietnamese boat people for one). These current people are not refugees UNTIL their status as such is established. If they proove to be genuine refugees, then they are accepted with no problems. If not, then they are sent back. A country cannot let anyone who wants to enter without regulation if it wishes to preserve its territorial integrity, especially in a situation like Australia with several neighbours with large populations and unstable societies.

These individuals are illegal entrants who are being detained in humane conditions until their application is processed. Plain and simple.

If they are genuine, then they are accepted fully into the community, and everyone prospers.

Your bizarre reference to the US, the Statue of Liberty et al is quite meaningless. We do follow the same policy and path as the US did in this situation. It is simply a deliberate misrepresentation of the abject facts of the situation to claim that Australia is acting in a racist or erroneous manner. It is easy to make comment from elsewhere in the globe, where the facts of the matter are unavailable.

To Morgasshk, thanks, just doing my job and my duty.:D

Whiskey Priest, you are right- you are wrong. They are protesting being held in the centres, they are protesting the conditions, the treatment, the weather, the time taken with their applications, the fact that they even have to make applications. The people smugglers never told them it was going to be this way before taking their money...

So was the policy.

Why detain them. Sweeden doesn't.
