Region/civ specific music

I'm adding region/civ specific soundtracks to the mod.
Probably I don't have to talk about the benefits of this to anyone here :)

There are a couple ways to do this, I think I would prefer to have it based on primarily the civ itself (as against of it being map/position/province or religion based for example).
So we would have groups of civs with the same track, or even a single civ can have a separate list in justified cases.

I'm keeping this era-based too:
So all civs in a given group share 4 separate soundtracks, 1 for each of the eras in the mod.

A song can be added for as many different groups as we would like (the sound file itself is only added to the mod once).
Actually I would like to have quite a few songs that are added for almost all civs. Probably a couple from the current soundtrack, many songs there kinda grew on me over the past few years :)
(With a potential middle-eastern group being an exception, they will most likely have entirely separate music.)

First of all, I think we should get the groups together:
- I do not want to have too many of these, so keep the groups as large as possible.
- The 6 civs coming to the mod (Serbia, Sicily, Rum, Crimea, Egypt, Tunisia) should already be included.
- A civ can have any existing soundtrack for a given era (so theoretically they can be moved around between groups within eras), but we should try to have constant groups for the sake of convenience.

About the music itself:

As in with diplomusic, info about the used soundtrack will be added to the mod's files.
We already have lots of info in this thread:
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/soundtrack.567943/

There will be a lot of additional music added to the mod, but we shouldn't go overboard with it, so I will only include the best possible songs.
10-15 songs/era/group should be enough, with as much overlap between groups (and eras) as possible.
Still, I'm thinking somewhere around 50-100 new music files altogether.

EDIT:
Note that the suggestions should be made with the extended timeline in mind, so the first 2 eras will be extended (in number of turns), while the last one shortened.

Sounds very interesting!

For groupings, here is my best guess: but they can go several different way because of regional influence...

A. Morocco, Cordoba, Egypt, Tunisia, Arabia, Ottomans, Rum, and Crimea [Islamic group]
B. Castile, Portugal, Aragon, France, and Burgundy [Iberian]
C. Genoa, Venice, Sicily, (Papal States), Austria, and Germany [because HRE influence]
D. England, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Netherlands? [North Sea group]
E. Moscow, Novgorod, Kiev, Poland, Lithuania, and Prussia [Eastern Europe group]
F. Byzantines, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Hungary [SE Europe group]

I think that is everyone. That would six groups, so 24 soundtracks.

Notes: France and Burgundy could go with Italy's group too? Netherlands can go with any neighboring group, and a similar situation with Germany and England...

Sorry if this is a silly question, but does all music chosen have to be royalty free/no copyright?
DoC and SoI have some really nice Middle Eastern music if so.

I'm not really sure about the exact rules what music can be used in mods, when can it be used and under what circumstances, but do not intend to give it too much thought.
Was planning to include music of similar type/form/whatever to the ones we already have.
There might already be some minor offenders among the current soundtrack, but if it was good enough for more than 10 years, I think similar stuff can be included safely.

So do not want/plan to be very thorough, would only like to avoid the most obvious offenders in this regard.

I had some time to look at music for the mod. I dislike vocals, so I prefer instrumental. Also, I haven't listened to the mod's current music in several months, so some of these might be too similar. Not sure if any are good enough for the mod either. And I have no idea how copyright works...

All of the ones below are from YouTube, titled and linked. I have. Feeling some civs can switch groups throughout the eras. For instance, France, England, and Germany can jump around because they influenced many different areas.

Western Europe (France, Italy, Germany)?

Here are more music suggestions for region specific soundtracks. The first group is for early ga,e civs in general, who are likely pagan. The second is a mixture of medieval European music, one specifically to Venice. The third is more Byzantine music...

One of the issues I've had looking at renaissance music in particular is that the videos tend to be several songs or even albums, which means they will have to be long soundtracks or spliced into separate songs if desired.

Civ 4 colonization's soundtracks also utilize this kind of music if that's easier for you to add Absinthe.

I can't really decide if that's a good thing or a bad. Probably both. :shifty:

Sure, we can grab some of the music from Colonization or from other mods as well.

The YouTube algorithm has been... different. Here are the titles of the Colonization soundtracks that could be added to this mod. I’m assuming you have that installed, so it would be an easy transfer.

I think many of them would work for most European players as late soundtracks, or possibly renaissance Soundtracks for Historical colonial powers (Portugal to Sweden)
Some might be duplicates with different names.

Here's a few more songs to potentially add. Only found things for Poland and Medieval France. For late France (Renaissance to 1800) anything by Lully should do.

All of Medieval France

Guillaume de Machaut: J'aim sans penser

I have a question: how did you make separated music for each Civ in your mod? I mean, I wanna do this in original Civ4 BTS, but I have no idea, what I should to do

I have a suggestion! :)

Here are some possible tracks that could be used for Scandanavia from the European Music Archalegolic Project-

I have another idea:

How about changing the 2d Audio scripts to incorporate more European ambient sounds?
