My fellow fanatics,

After the release of C7 Babylon more than two and a half years ago, I put forth a simple proposition.

Carthago Creanda Est: Carthage must be created.

And so it was. Today is the realization of that effort: C7 v0.2 Carthage is released, and ready for your enjoyment!

As always, you can view the release notes and download it directly from our release page.

This final release of Carthage represents the largest update yet to C7: the migration from Godot 3 and Mono to Godot 4 and .NET. This is a major upgrade in the underlying technology, and opens the door to more advanced capabilities going forward. We owe a tremendous thanks to our developer pcen, who over a 16-month period single-handedly performed the bulk of the work to port the game code to Godot 4. In fact I might call this the pcen release, because it would not be what it is without him! I also want to extend a special thanks and welcome to our two newest contributors Yegor and Tom who appeared just in time to help wrap up some lingering issues and get Carthage out the door, and again to Tom for resolving our last critical problem in the release build. (It turns out you have to build before releasing!) Without their quick work Carthage would not have been ready anytime soon. And as always, thank you to all of our contributors, past and present.

Now, to business: Carthage is still what we would call an early pre-alpha, meaning it is nowhere near a complete product, but it is starting to feel like a playable game! Not Civ yet, not even quite a 4X, but arguably a rudimentary strategy game.

Let's take a look at the rest of the changes since Preview 4:

  • New default map: When selecting "Quick Start" you will play as Carthage (of course) on a small continents map against 6 AI civs.
  • New custom city graphics courtesy of Kyriakos

Not bad, Inca. I've seen worse city placement in Civ3.

  • Limited support for loading Civ3 saves and scenarios (your mileage may vary; some will work and others will not)
  • Remaining unit movement is shown as fractional numbers, eg. taking road movement into account

Look familiar? For the record, C7 is not a valid way to play GOTM

  • Improved unit go-to behavior, with an overlay showing the intended route and number of turns
  • Added an option to change production from the city right-click menu

Press 'G' for go-to
  • Added a popup announcement when a civilization is destroyed

That has to count for at least "1X", right?

  • Miscellaneous UI improvements
  • Improved detection of Steam Civ3 installation
  • The game should remember your Civ3 installation location once you set it manually
  • Updated game credits

Thank you to everyone for your interest and support! If you would like to get involved, we work on GitHub and mostly coordinate through our Discord. On the technical side, there are plenty of good first issues for new developers. Let us know here or there what you'd like to work on, and we'll get you set up. Also, art can now be added easily, and this opens the door both to artists and to someone being a community art curator. Having our own (or otherwise free) art is an important step to being able to market C7 more broadly, and it would be great to have a significant amount of custom-made assets shipping with the final C7 release. We're also starting to populate a requirements testing list to note areas where we will need to test and document Civ3's capabilities in order to support equivalent behavior in C7. While there aren't many items there yet, this is another great opportunity for non-technical assistance.

Now, go forth and conquer!

@Quintillus or @Lanzelot could we have this thread pinned and the other [Release] thread unpinned please?

So, when will others of my city sets be used? :D
When you bequeath them to us! But really, we don't have any concept of cultures or eras yet, so it will take some work before were can make use of multiple.

These are all in the same series as the one used already, and I did give permission for them to be used :)
