We all know religion is awesome (more temples/monasteries/cathedrals and such). However, I need to know..

how do you get other religions in your empire? The AI doesn't seem to like missionaries, and with a religion already present, the chances of spread through trade is minuscule.

Research the appropriate tech first is the sure way, failing that have open borders with as many AI civs as possible, they spread eventually.

Capture a city with the appropriate religion in it, build a monastery, build missionaries.

Alternatively, run Organized Religion, which negates the need for a monastery (you can build missionaries of any religion, provided that the city has that religion). Conveniently, monasteries seem to allow construction of missonaries even after Scientific Method (in Vanilla, anyway).

I've always been able to use monasteries for missionary-building after sci-method. You just can't build more monasteries, nor do you get the 10% science bonus.

Right - I wonder if that was intentional? I mean, I miss the 10% science, but being able to build missionaries in any civic can be handy in the late game - with shrine + Wall Street, bank, market, grocer... it adds up.

Monasteries are working as designed right now. Although for a more balanced end game, its probably better to ban missionaries from monasteries also. Debatable I guess.

As I think about it, the shrine income and the multipliers applied thereto can be secondary to the value of +1 happy (for the cost of a 40 shield missionary) when in Free Religion (and the ability to build a Temple on top of that).

Losing the ability to make missionaries would be very bad and unfun. Who wants to lose control over a big part of the game such as religion?

Anyway plenty of religions in real life still do it (hello Mormons!) so it's realistic too.

In answer to the original question, I find I get missionary-ized quite a bit if I share a continent with certain civs... try playing Pangea and open borders.

Another way to try and get new religions is to found a new city and don't send your own missionary to it. Religions will only spread without missionaries if a city doesn't have any religion at all. So by having a city with no religion, you have th e possibility of gaining a foreign religion.
