I just played a game where i spammed cities a la REX and build the apostolic palace/university of sankore/spiral mineret/sistine chapel and the christian shrine, building as many cities as i could within my cultural borders. The temples, cathedrals and monasteries were producing a lot of culture and research and made more then up for the upkeep.
In end i had about 10 cities. Every christian building was producing 2 hammers/beakers/coins between 5 and 7 culture. Sometimes ofcourse amplified by cathedrals.
I was wondering if you forumers have an opinion. Is city spam with asap temple/monastary's a viable thing to with the apostolic palace?
It was on warlord difficultie this time.
With the monasteries/temples the city square itself alone produces 4 hammers and obviously if you spam the citys in each others crosses you can share the tiles which allows you to build fewer workers and gives you better efficiency in the early game.
I was also spamming Great prophet points which i used to quickly build temples in new settlements. this way a new place gets 6+h/turn very quick.

I have done this recently also and it was a nice addition. The game was noble and normally I play monarch (just getting used to a lot of the new stuff). Thus, I was really far ahead and was able to do this for grins.

The end result is nice but certainly wouldn't sustain an economy. Coupled with the shrine and cathedrals in the right places, it serves as a nice boost. The extra gold can yield some flexibility with the commerce/culture/wealth/espionage slider.

This may be really easy to facilitate with Ramses (spiritual -half price temples, industrious - cheap wonders) and could be implemented with relative ease. There are plenty of ways to generate culture though (temples and monastaries) so I'm not certain the sistine chapel is needed (perhaps if one was warring - the culture from specialists is nice right out of resistance).

I think you'd be stupid not to build temple/monastary in every city if you have the Apolistic palace and the appropriate state religion....

I always try to spam as many religions into my capital as possible, and then build the monastaries ASAP. On a pangea map, or if you get lucky, you can get 6-7 monastaries in your capital. Spam cottages and take a 50% commerce boost from Beaurocracy. Combine the 60-70% science boost with 50% from library/univ, 100% from oxford, 50% from science GP building, build the great library, and settle any additional science GPs in the capital and you'll be cranking out INSANE levels of science in your capital before you can even get liberalism (provided u can get the universities up fast enough). For the ultimate science city: still spam cottages but make the city as large as possible, build the Temple of Artemis in your capital city that lies on the coast, while ensuring that you build the Great Lighthouse in another coastal city. If you manage to pull this off (above emporer its tough to get all 3 of these wonders, even if you whip-chop), your capital city will generate 40+ commerce per turn from trade routes in addition to you cottage spam... add that to the aforementioned multipliers... You can outtech the AI until the industrial era with 1 city.

the intention was that this strategy be abused in the early game when and where hammers are hard to come by, such as early stages of a city before you get US

    i do this with ghandi
    yummy yummy specialists =)

Oh yeah, I call it the Holy Trinity.
With these wonders monatstries and temples are the first builings in every new city right after the Granary, but currently they are a little buggy.
If you change your state religion or adopt Free Religion, Spiral Minaret and Sankore University will permanently loose their effect even after you go back to your old religion.

It works at Monarch level if you are Industrious, and works especially well with France's Louis's wonderspam. Skip Stonehenge and go for the Oracle/CoL, then Great Library, Theo, and AP. Sistine, Spiral, Uni of Sank etc. follow. In my current game I couldn't get the Hanging Gardens or Great Lighthouse in time, but I got everything else and am cruising towards a Domination victory.
