Hello (again).

This is a specialist Multi-figure unit for Civ3, "Religious Crusade."
Made from several default Civ3 units, from Steph's SBB utility.

Usage recommendations:

Requires Monotheism, costs 100 shields, costs 3 population; give it high combat stats relative to contemporary units (I gave it 1 more attack then the Knight); give it +2 hit points, I also gave it the abilities to Join City and Build City, AI strategies set to Offense and Settle.
Finally, have it become obsolete fairly quickly (like with gunpowder or a little sooner).

I feel this makes it a good unit to symbolize the Crusades, since it involves the movement of population, as well as military conquest.

Admittedly, the unit is most useful for a human player, as the AI can't use it to it's full potential; I've only seen the AI use this as a heavy offensive unit, and I doubt it would use it to join a city - which is a very handy little ability to have on this unit.

But, if you have the unit become obsolete early enough, it won't be an all-over-the-damn-place AI built unit: the shield and population cost, and the small window the unit is availible counters this problem. So, the unit turns out being a short-lived, expensive, but extremely powerful force... kind of like what the Crusades were. :p

Oh yeah, a final note: I made the unit with a mixture of Civ3 units, and so I feel it is generic enough (with the name as well) to be used by all civs in the game.

Installation:

Just unzip the file to art/units/ and have fun.

The .ini links to some default sound effects, so you don't need to move any sound files around. Although I would prefer sounds more fitting to this unit, it works fine for now (and I don't know how to mess with the sounds, nor want to add the extra d/l size from the waves).

I have included two Civilopedia Icons in the zip as well, if you don't know how to add them in, you don't need to bother as it doesn't effect the unit's performance in game. For the unit icon (in units_32.pcx) I suggest just using one of the default army icons (the flag/banner icons), since some of the are not used.

I don't think this one is as good as the Tribe. I think it should be made of the Crusader Unit, Mideval Infantry, Pikeman, and Longbowman units. Maybe even throw ina trebuchet and allow it to bombard? Or soemthing.

Also, I don't have Medieval Infantry (I only have Civ3)... but anyway, I didn't want it to be completely European - in fact in my mod, I've changed Polytheism and Monotheism to (Organized) Religion, and Religious Zeal (I never liked how in Civ Monotheism is supposedly more "advanced").

is it possible to have an anim?

I'm unable to make animated previews... when I did make one (on my Pioneers unit back in the day) the file size was too big to use as a preview anyway.

It would be awesome if someone could make a animated preview of the death animation, I feel it's my personal best so far. :)

Here is a preview in .GIF format of the attack animation. I made it using a tool called Flc2Gif.

There is a thread with it, in the Civ3 Creation... > Utility Programs subforum. I'm not sure if there is a newer version of the program.

I used it before on my Pioneers, but I must have done something wrong with it, because the gif preview was over 900k in size.

Thanks for the anim sims, but you couldn't made the death one instead? ;)

I always thought 'scripture' would be a good replacement for monotheism (once the stuff is written down it is more standardized and the one can progress to thinking about it effectively (Theology)

First off I appreciate the effort of all who strive to create any type of unit, and I deeply appreciate it you guys but... Can I ask a question? Why the hell does the Crusade unit have an Immortal, a Persian Bowman, an Ancient Grecian Spearman (thats what the default spearman reminds me of), and an ancient swordsman? I would've much preferred to see some knights, and some of the custom made units (that actually were from around that time) put into the unit. But who am I to talk, as I haven't ever even made a unit before :) . Just a suggestion ;)

great unit! :goodjob: :goodjob:

Ten character minimum

Perhaps the crusade is made up of a mixture of different warriors from different areas uniting under a charismatic leader? Maybe a few mercenaries thrown in? Oh yeah, sounds nothing like a crusade.

For one thing, the vanilla civ3 units are essentially fictional... they are loosely based on military units from history, and their features are exaggerated anyway. Like you say, why does it have an Immortal? Guess what, that's not an immortal. Someone made a real Immortal unit (bowman with shield and sword).

Anyway, all this unit is: a warrior with a scimitar, a warrior with a small shield and broadsword beside him, and covering the flanks is a warrior with an oval shield and a spear, and a warrior with a compound bow.

If you want a euro-centric Catholic crusade unit, I'd suggest finding some of BeBro's units; I think he has made the heavy calvary of all the old crusading orders.

Yeah, that's one thing I hate about the game...

But like I said before, thanks, I just wont be using it ;)
