Religious Schisms, what do YOU think?

After thinking about the game I have been currently playing I was thinking about a possible mod on the religions.

How hard would it be to cause internal problems like schisms into the religious model. I wonder this because in my current game I am the owner of christianity, however I have done so well at spreading it across the world that Rome and France are major christian leaders. They have a very large voice within the AP. I was thinking that if enough resolutions or political stances started causing a rift between two great religous powers that a schism could form, and there could be religious riots with cities of that religion, and multiple AP residents could be spawned. Or something along those lines.

In my game I created my own storyline schisms to explain the atmosphere within the game and the reason behind some of my maneuvers, but I thought a real in game development of this type might be enjoyed by others.

religious lack real substance in the game (ok they do bring nations togterher etc). but i used to run a gread mod in which each had its own special abilities (pork = unhappy for jewish but something else gave happy)...was pretty cool. at least in Bts ive noticed the stone/bronzemarble speed up of monasteries etc depend on religion..was this in Civ4. soz if bit off topic lol

...The cathedrals have double speed with copper/stone/whatever, this was already in cIV before BtS or even Warlords.

ah must have missed that one, only really noticed it in last game! bad me! lol cheers mate :)

I think Schisms could be a feasible addition, but only if a particular religion is especially dominant in a game (I'd say more than twice the popularity of another religion at the time and/or the two most powerful civs have the same religion).

I think it would also make for a good random event choice, i.e. you choose whether to let the schism spread (lets say, straining relations but giving a culture boost to each city spread) or quash it and trade unhappiness for a diplomatic boost.

It seems that religious infighting can be as feverent as intra-religious fighting.

I can think of splits for Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism, but I can't think how you'd split Confucianism, Taoism, and Judaism.
