Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says she will resign, after fallout with Trump

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia announced on Friday night that she will resign her seat in the House of Representatives, with her last day in office being Jan. 5.

Greene’s announcement, in a video and statement posted on X, followed a dramatic break with President Donald Trump, which she cited as playing a role in her decision to leave Congress in the middle of her third term.

Green, 51, had been a leading supporter of Trump and a prominent figure in his Make America Great Again, or MAGA, movement, while sparking controversy for promoting conspiracy theories and using extreme rhetoric.

But she recently faced harsh criticism from Trump for backing a bill to compel the Department of Justice to release investigative files about Jeffrey Epstein, the notorious sex offender.

Greene also has criticized the Republican president for what prioritizing meeting with foreign leaders at the expense of paying attention to the needs of Americans.

“I have too much self respect and dignity, love my family too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms,” Greene wrote in her statement.

“And in turn, be expected to defend the President against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me,” Greene said.

“It’s all so absurd and completely unserious,” she wrote. “I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’ hoping it all goes away and gets better.”

Greene’s resignation from her seat representing Georgia’s 14th District could set the stage for her to seek to replace Trump in the White House in the 2028 election, and possibly become the next leader of the MAGA movement once he exits political life.

But Greene, in her statement,t conceded that her resignation could end not only her congressional career, but also her role in MAGA.

“If I am cast aside by MAGA Inc and replaced by Neocons, Big Pharma, Big Tech, Military Industrial War Complex, foreign leaders, and the elite donor class that can’t even relate to real Americans, then many common Americans have been cast aside and replaced as well.”
The fun begins.

What is it with Georgia and kooky Congresspeople? McKinney, Johnson, Taylor Greene. I don’t care if they are a Delta hub, I think the U.S. needs to secede.

She dislikes being called a traitor. Good for her.

She sounded sane last I looked. Might even be genuine with resigning.

When MTGs the sane one.....

I think she realized just how crazy and stupid Trump is.

Members of congress can draw congressional retirement after five years in office. MTG is resigning after five years and two days.

Works out to $21,750 per year if calculated on 2.5% of salary per year. (12.5% of $174,000)—that’s just based on a quick googling of congressional pensions.

And she gets that for life from the point of leaving, or does she have to wait until 65? Pretty good either way.

This is part recognition of the total bandwagon effect of Donald Trump. Of MAGA not being a true movement per se so much as an "opportunity" for a lot of hucksters to make inroads into the political sphere they otherwise wouldn't've.

Trump kicked Greene off that wagon; it's that simple.

Or, or, and hear me out here . . .

It's the first step in her presidential bid for 2028.

Go out on the high of having defied Trump. Wait for Trump fatigue to set in, perhaps for some truly damaging details to emerge from the files.

Swoop in as MAGA's new figurehead, and the hero who forced those revelations.

I do not see how the going out helps her here.

She is now able to campaign from outside of the system.

If she takes the view that the Donald Trump presidency is going to end as disastrously as I do, then so clearly
dissociating herself early may be critical in separating her from the ingratiating themselves with Donald crowd.

I see you've come around :)

I love to say I told you so... but... I told you so ;)

That she'll make a bid? I didn't need any convincing that she would be among the number who tried. In fact I explicitly identified her as being one rival and having one corner of Trump's appeal.

Our point of disagreement is as to whether she will succeed. To that I continue to say, "nope!"

I don't know what hair I'm supposedly splitting. I've never disputed that she would run. In fact, in my post that you cited in the other thread, I flatly state that I assume she will be one of the contenders.

As to succeed . . .

She won't win the R nomination in 2028.

Will drop out after Iowa. If she even makes it that far.

And, on the larger point, no R will in 2028 get Trump's 77 million votes, i.e. no one else will manage to re-unite the coalition Trump pulled together (or any alternate equivalent). No heir to MAGA. MAGA dies with Trump. No small number of Rs are resentful of anyone who even tries to reference the slogan. You're not MAGA. You're not MAGA. Trump's the MAGA.

(Doesn't mean the D candidate wins, incidentally, though I suspect he will.)

On an unrelated point, I've always assumed Don Jr. would also be one of the wannabees, but recently I've started feeling he won't put himself forward. He doesn't have his dad's craving for adulation, so I think he'll think "what's the point?"
