Representation or universal suffrage?

I go to Representation when I get Pyramids - due to the extra town hammers I only go to US when I get Democracy, and thus get (?) Emancipation which causes more rapid cottage growth.

I'm a rookie and I'll very probably say something very stupid, but would someone please explain to me why in Universal Suffrage, my bank randomly empties. I've no doubt it isn't random, but I don't understand what that's about. For example, I'll have $500 banked and am earning $100 per turn. Next turn, I have $50 in the bank, I'm still earning $50 per turn, and I didn't buy anything. I just can't figure out why that happens on US.

If I've interrupted a conversation, sorry.

Really? I do have some activated. I didn't know they could do that. What could they be spending it on, and why is it only on US?

They would have rushed units/buildings (the only thing you can spend money one and only available in US).

Thanks very much for your replies. It was driving me nuts as I couldn't figure it out. I had no idea they could or would do that.

US also allows you to leverage "research" "culture" and "wealth" if you are running cities with alot of towns.

Another use of US is to rush production on late-game wonders.

I go to Representation as soon as I build Pyramids to get the extra happiness and research, but once I get other happiness resources working, I am always tempted to switch to Monarchy to get faster population growth. Does anybody do that? Curious.

Switching to HR when rep is available usually is nonsense. If you need more :) than rep gives you, do some trading for resources, spread religions, etc. "When you get your happiness resources working", you don't need HR at all as HR only gives happiness...

Rushing lategame wonders with cash is a bit of a waste imo, if I'd rush anything its infra in science (and thus low production) cities or an army :hammer:

I get your point. Actually, I don't switch to HR, but I have considered it at times to allow more population growth. Yes, I do spread religion, build Temple, acquire happiness crops. But each of those only permits one additional happy person. With HR, every time you hit your cap, you just add another military unit or move one from a city that doesn't need it to one that does. That allows population to increase faster than keeping Rep all the time.

The times I have rushed late-game wonders with money is when I am in a very tight race for a Cultural Victory and need Eifel Tower, Broadway, Hollywood fast (or somebody like Masa is a threat to build it ahead of me). If I get a Great Merchant, sometimes I use the money to build a wonder. This is better than leaving the money unworking. To me, using it to build military units is a waste unless you are at war.:)

Of course you'd only rush units if you'd want to go to war ;)

Well in my cultural games I usually give up on teching after liberalism...

Happiness with representation shouldn't be a problem. Gold doesn't necessarily give you +1:), if you have a forge it's +2:), fur with marked as well, etc. This should be enough to please your citizens. Also, working just farms isn't that hot either as that doesn't exactly produce much, maybe you should mix in a few mines or workshops... ;)

The only time HR makes a lot of sense over rep is when you are farming diplo relations and you need it for shared favorite civic.

Fast culture wins generally win lib and take nationalism and quit teching...trading for PP if possible.

Yes, I also stop teching after Liberalism if I am in good position, but occasionally I do need Broadway, Hollywood, etc. cultural wonders to beat the Spaceship builders, and that is where buying them can be faster than building them if you have the money.

Happiness is not always a problem. I have been playing at Emperor level where religion and happiness resources are not always readily available in the early game, so the happiness cap can become an issue without HR until I get Drama.

It's your game, I'm sure you know your specific situation best. In fact I thought the precedent was that you should not adopt Representation over HR if you are facing severe unhappiness.

Why don't you try adopting Hereditary Rule, and skipping the Pyramids? I'll bet those extra 500 :hammers: can be put to good use else where. :)

Why can't you have a lot of towns, use your food excess to run specialists and use Rep.

I stay in Rep for as long as possible. The extra bpt is great. If I manage to get the Christo Redendor (usually happens) then I switch to US when I need to rushbuy things, then switch back to Rep.

Rep is amazing in many ways.

If I have Stone, I am building Pyramids every time. And since I am Spiritualist, I can switch civics without anarchy, so I was thinking there have been a few times where I have a happiness crunch as my population is outgrowing my happiness resources. This sometimes happens just before I get to Drama to solve the problem. During that little transition period, I have sometimes considered briefly going to HR to allow my cities to grow another 2 or 3 without unhappiness as I am waiting for Drama to come online. I have never really tried it --- just thought about it.:D
