Republic & Corruption

I have just completed the five turns of anarchy in the change from despotism to Republic. I am playing at Regent level.

Can anybody tell me why my corruption has jumped significantly, (from Despotism), once I got to Republic? I probably wouldn't have noticed except I had to drop my science from 80% to 40% to keep the budget breaking even.

Thanks

In despot you get free units, that may be why you experience increased expenses. If you look at the dollar amount corruption may seem higher in Republic, but the % is lower. Your making twice as much gold in republic, because every tile that produces one gold gets another one. With republic making twice as much gold you can set science at 40% in republic and be putting almost as many actual beakers into science as putting 80% when in despotism. Republic gets better as your cities grow, so having a bunch of cities that are size 1-3 may not be very good, but it will kick butt when they start reaching size 6+.

No. The opposite.

Hard to say without a saved game or more specifics. Republic has less corruption than Despotism. Republic has a gold bonus, and Despotism has four units support per town. Many players lose gold when transitioning from Despotism to Republic. One quick way to check before pressing the Revolution button, is on the F1 screen and F3 screen. If the total gold before corruption is double the number of units, then a player will usually have more gold after switching governments.

Generally, three luxuries and marketplaces in the core cities are a good idea before making the switch to Republic. In other cases, Monarchy may be the better choice, and in some cases staying in Despotism is better.

For large cities far away from the capital, the Republic corruption bonus may have minimal effect and make it look like higher corruption as the gold output goes up. Example: under Despotism a pop 12 city that is totally corrupt and produces 12 gold raw, 0 gold after corruption. For Republic this might increase to 20 gold raw and still have 0 gold after corruption if it is really far from the capital. Making it look like more corruption overall for Republic even though this is not true in the code.

My problem is always not despotism to republic- I always get out of depotism and into monarchy asap. Its the timing of monarchy to republic that is the tough call for me. I usually have a large military, hate being pushed around by the militant civs, and the large unit upkeep difference makes it tough to figure out when its a good time to switch. The net result is that I tend to stay in monarchy probably longer then I should.

Anyone got any suggestions on a way to determine this?

Personally, dcribb, I get out of despotism fairly fast (although NOT as fast as in Civ II), as fast as I can research Monarchy. Then I invade my despotic neighbors and clear my continent.

Sell everything the AI will buy, your economy will thrive under a republic! If you are making more gold per turn than you have units (e.g. +110g/turn and an army of 90 units), you will keep that edge in republic. Even if you struggle at first, you will speed research by switching to republic - sell techs, earn more gold. It's a good cycle to get into.

Again, generally, three luxuries and marketplaces in the core cities are a good idea before making the switch to Republic. If you have less than three luxuries, trade for more, or take some by force. If no trade or conquest is available, you may be better off staying in Monarchy.

I have to agree with BillChin. It is important to have a solid infrastructure in the core cities before switching to republic. Luxuries are a must if you intend to engage in protracted wars (which is going to happen no matter what if you're using 1.17f)

Good luck!

You're making more money, so the corruption NUMBERS are higher, but you still net more in Republic than in the equivalent Despotic government.

The essential part of the strategy is NOT to get corruption to zero, but to get INCOME to be higher. Just because there is more corruption doesn't mean you are worse off...you produce a lot more in a Republic as well.
