i dont know about you guys, but for me the best government in civ3 was the republic. a simple to pay 1 gpt per unit, but the economic rewards were tremendous, allowing for a booming science research and industrial development of my cities. you may notice this is written in past tense. thats because, according to the review on ign.com, the gpt per unit has now doubled. thats right DOUBLED! i cant believe it, its not even realistic....i just dont get it. i guess ill play fascist governements now............

The ign.com review says the 2 gold per turn is for Republican form of governments; I hope they don’t think democracy is a republican gov. because it is a “Representative” Democracy. IMHO, I think this is bs even if the penalty is exclusive to Republic because it glorifies communism. Oh, I can tell you that fascism will most likely suck because it just wouldn’t be PC to have it useful.

Facist metros can support 10 each!

Work rate is doubled, no WW.

On the negative side, you loose pop when joining a Facist gov, captured cities loose pop. You can't produce any culture until your citizens get the majority of population. You also have to pop-rush.

EDIT: And the change for the Repulblic is called balancing. The reason it was changed is the exact reason you liked it so much. It was too good.

I know all the advantages of fascism, but I am thinking that no civilization will have it as a favorite government and all governments will hate fascism. This is unfair because both Communism and Democratic governments will dog pile any fascist, and this is why I think it will suck.

EDIT: Yeah, and now everyone will dislike Republic....:(

like what? i seriously hope theyre good.

Can't tell you, but it is good. :)

I never liked it anyway. I used Monarchy just to prove the fact that you don't need to be in Republic. I usually have my wars around that time anyway.

I don't think it ruins Republics, just shortens their length (maybe only for Religious civs, as everyone else would might want to wait until Democracy).

The Republic was meant to be a peacetime government, not a wartime one. Monarchy is the one for war in the ancient era.

Re: Fascism

Considering the fact the cost of gold-rushing has doubled (I think...some one correct me if I'm wrong), having to pop-rush isn't that bad. Plus, I think there is only a -1 AI attitude hit (if I remember correctly from Bamspeedy's article) if you're in a government shunned by the AI.

I think Fascism is very appealing.

With such high unit costs, will there be any good use for this governemnt? Can you maintain one unit in each city, as to not be destroyed without this new penalty? Otherwise republic will become an aweful government. You do know that you need units in peacetime, incase you are attacked, right? Also, I will almost definately mod this out.

Yes, max you are correct about gold-rush, I didn’t think about that.

I am thinking that Republic will be significantly less useful if not totally useless; however, we must play the game first before we can judge. Still, it doesnt look good for the home team with double unit cost and double gold-rush cost...

Per the IGN review the cost is +50%, not +100%.

Heh. I love these sore losers going 'When I get it I'm going to mod it out!!!!!111'

The fact is. It is balancing. You could stay in Republic indefinitly as it was even more desirable then Democracy. Finally it looks like there will be a bit of stratagy involved.

All this basically means is that offensive armies are pretty much a no-no in Republic. Small definsive force, yes. And I think that's fine.

I must admit that Republic was the best government to play but now it looks completely nerfed. I understand the concept of balance, but can we have a little realism since the Roman Republic had one of the largest and most successful war machines in history? Small defensive force my @$$...

very true, but as some people have said, rome had a republic and they didnt have a defensive force, they had an offensive machine. granted theyre one in a couple hundred (thousand?) countries that have used the republican form of government and had a dominant military presence, but there were others. carthage for example. and i guess republic was pretty much unstoppable if you knew how to get off to a good start. i really wish someone could tell me how theyre going to "balance" the republican government for conquests.

But many other Republics were peaceful. Also, for a lot of its history Rome was also ruled by a near-enough Monarchy...

FYI, the United States is a Federal Republic and it has a huge offensive force (see gulf war I and II). I know people are going to say: "But we are a democracy!", but we never have been. We elect representatives to vote for us.
