Im trying to improve my game (emperor difficulty), I should probably use great people for techs, but I cant help myself and so I add them to my cities...I'd like general advice, things Im doing right, and things Im doing wrong, for example.

Ive been isolated most of the game, until I got to navigation, but built up a very nice economy. Im now trying to build a respectable military...and start expanding over seas.

The military leader just canceled open borders with me...so Im trying to slave up troops.

I'll take a look tonight and make a better post for you tomorrow.

I have some saved games of emperor games as well, which are around 100-150 turns saved games. So I'll send those your way, and I usually do pretty well compared to the AI on this difficulty.

Thanks Buddy. Kmod is the only reason I still play this game, so much fun!!

Im so much better than what I was, even when I played Civ4 ladder, years ago.

Hey the two biggest things I see are diplomacy and production is really low. You have no real friends in this game, the most you got is +3 to a few people. If you manage good diplomacy you can get people to war the stronger people for you. Keeping both of them busy.

and IMO figure out what you want your cities to actually do. Since most of them are building stuff like harbors, courthouses which are only generating +3 commerce when completed for 120+ hammers? definitely not worth the trade off. And Osaka for example, is your wealth city. But it's building University for science now? The only time you build uni's in cities that aren't for research is when it's the only way to reach the 5 required for Oxford quickly.

Your research is good, but that's only because there are so many cities. My style of play I could reach the same amount by focusing on beakers into 3-5 cities. And then I would turn all your smaller cities into only granary and barracks infastractuers, after that you can have them build units.

Also if you hit F1 and look at your hammers. It's very low besides the capital. For example, Tokyo would have been great production and could have grown nicely to 15+ pop with 40+ hammers, but it's working cottages instead? you can cottage anywhere else after all!

Boudica could have been controlled this game by making friends with her neighbors and trading techs to them for declaring war on her.

Also I feel like the units you have are gonna run into gunpowder units from the AI once you actually get them all rallied up and outside the enemy gates. Just build archers if you want +1 happiness from monarchy civic. And focus your samurai/siege units in your major production cities (but unfortunately there aren't any in this game)

I'm no expert or anything, and your micromanagement skill is better than mine.

You are definitely right, I dont have many clear allies in the world. I am a philosophic civ, so I get half price universities.

I made cottages in my capital, Kyoto, because I like to use bureaucracy for a long time (+50% hammers and commerce).

I seperate my expansion cities into production and commerce, so I have a couple cities besides Osaka with mostly production improvements, like Yokohama, Sapporo. I shouldnt really have those 2 cottages on Tokyo, I agree.

Harbor trade bonus increases as a city gets larger, so its usually not just +3. And Im still using slavery, so Im not really waiting the full time for the building to get produced.

Heres my updated save. I have destroyed Darius, but Boudica expanded like a plague, but I have managed to sneak attack him.

The english are also a threat, but they are attacking Byzantiun.

Okay, I play small maps only. Could barely load up your save without my computer getting a heart attack.

For me harbors have always been less useful when there's only 5 other AI.

I do run slavery and burea for as long as possible most games. But usually focus it all on units instead of infrastructure.

sorry to highjack the discussion,
but i dont get this bit:

roby:

i am only a princeling really on k-mod so be easy on me, but i thought that a "wealth" city would be exactly the kind of place to build a uni??

Library, Uni, Oxford = science beakers
Market, Bank, Wall Street = Commerce, Gold, Wealth whatever you wanna call it.

Two different things.

Building all this in every city is way to many hammers. So that's why I focus on specializing cities to have one purpose.

Of course there are exceptions, the OP's game he gets a 50% discount on Uni since hes Philosophical (I thought he was using Toku) but he just had un-restricted leaders on lol.

But the person who posted that save plays totally different from me, he chooses to just whip infrastructure for the entire game. Where I choose to whip units instead.

ah right, i see what you mean now. i play kinda like how charles seems to, your methods seem intriguing though. i gonna try this super-specialized cities bizz the next time i play.

thanks for the reply :)

In general :gold: buildings take much longer to pay back their cost, purely due to how easy it is to get :gold: from selling older techs to AIs.
