Resetting promotions on upgrades

Some units upgrade rather oddly (ranged to melee or vice-versa for example), resulting in wasted promotions. Is there a way to reset promotions when you upgrade a unit, so you can choose appropriate ones?

There is definitely a way with lua. Someone already made a mod like this called "Promotion Crossovers" or something like that, which maps certain promotions to other promotions when there is an odd upgrade. I think whoward make it, but I'm not sure. Look it up on steam workshop.
