Resource within city borders, but not on continent

Annoys me a lot. How do I connect it? I'm in the wonderful position that the only copper within any sort of reach is on a small three tile island just off the coast by my capital, and, obviously, building a road on it isn't sufficient to get the resource. Is the copper a lost cause? I'm thinking of rushing to iron working soon, and hope for some better luck there, but this is an issue that's been annoying me for some time and in many different games. Is there any obvious fix for this?

IIRC, once you research sailing you'll be able to make use of the resources, all that is required is a route to the coast (a river or a road.)

Fishing makes rivers into routes
The Wheel makes roads into routes
Sailing makes coastal tiles into routes
Astronomy makes ocean tiles into routes

Well, I think BtS changed Fishing/Sailing so that fishing allows neither rivers nor coastal trade routes, but sailing gives both. With that said, though, I have both fishing and sailing on the screenshotted game, but no luck. I figure the best I could do is put a city on the small island, but first of all, it'd be to close to settle, besides, it'd be a pretty wasted settler. As far as I can figure out, there's really no way of getting the resource. How about forts? Anyone got an idea of they count as cities as far as trade routes go?

gopher666,

Is there a road on the copper? If so and you still don't have access to copper I'm mistaken. Sorry about that.

Make a fort 1S of the Cooper ( just for not interfere with BFC ) and link it by road to the cooper.

r_rolo1,

Please excuse my disdain, but I hate forts. They things take forever to build, especially when it's early-game and you only have one or two workers. I can think of so many things I'd rather have my workers doing, but if this is the only way one can get copper I understand their necessity. Personally I'd start preparing for my 2nd city and gamble for Iron in this situation, but I'm an expansionist.

@gopher666

Forts do count as cities as far as trade routes go if they are inside of your cultural borders....

@Kesshi

You may hate forts ,but there are only two ways of connecting that cooper to the trade network:
- fort 1S of cooper connected by road to cooper
- City 1S of cooper connected by road to cooper

And forts are by far a better option than a city in this situation....

Of course that betting on iron may work better ( if you can research IW, ( make a city near the iron ,mine ( and road ) the iron ( and connect to capitol ) .... most of the times making the fort will be faster, suposing that there is iron... ) ,but in this situation, where he already has the worker in the island and it is 4 turns away from Mathematics I think that making the fort is a decent option

So long as they are on different land masses, cities can be two tiles apart. Of course, the fort is a far better solution to this problem even so.
