[RFC-DoC] Bella Italia

Hmmmm. let's see. According to the ballet, I can vote for Romney, Obama, or Star. Well calling someone a star means that they are good at what they do so I vote "Patrick Star"

Meanwhile, in Italy...

In 1617, Serbians revolted against their French overlords and joined the Italian League, even as heavy battles were occurring in the Spanish front.

Spoiler :

Neglect by Italian commanders allowed Spanish troops to plunder Rome in 1631. The next year, Italian troops retook the city, but many priceless works of art were destroyed in the process.

Spoiler :

All Italy was enraged at the barbaric Spanish behaviour in Rome, demanding revenge. Tuscan infantry destroyed the Spanish in Liguria and Provence with renewed fervour.

Spoiler :

Italian grief over the plundering of Rome was transformed into a major national revival, with political theoretician Nicollo Machiavelli and humanist Giovanni Pico della Mirandola advocating a campaign to punish the greedy Spanish.

Spoiler :

France agreed to give Italian troops the right of passage.

Spoiler :

Provence was finally returned to the Italian fold.

Spoiler :

Seeing the Italian successes on the battlefield, England, an enemy of Spain, established a closer relationship with the Italian League.

Spoiler :

But the Italians wanted more than just restoration of previous Spanish-Italian border. They invaded Catalonia, as to not let the Spanish destroy the riches of Italy ever again.

Spoiler :

After this, both sides signed peace, enabling trade to fill the coffers of Italian merchants, including trade with Spain.

It's Nicolò Macchiavelli, not Nicollo :p

Kick those Spaniards out of Italy! Also, didn't Spain's capture of Rome ruin your shot at the culture goal?

The culture goal had been already completed at the time (the first golden age was from its completion). Now the only thing left is to fulfil Mussolini's Dream. The "in 1930" goal makes it harder than "by 1930".

The people of Slavonia and Serbia were very devout. The Miracle of Belgrade Mother of God drew millions of pilgrims to the eastern edge of Italian territories.

Spoiler :

Italy pioneered the new printing techniques long used in the glorious empire of China.

Spoiler :

Here's what Europeans knew about the rest of the world in 1681.

Spoiler :

Calculations from Italian cartographers showed that 51,04% of Mediterranean coast is in Italian hands.

Spoiler :

While Italy remained peaceful and prosperous, huge events shook the German lands. One of the Holy Roman Empire's kingdoms proclaimed supremacy over the Emperor in Wien, in a short war subduing most of the other small German states. The Emperor attempted to enlist Polish help in order to squash the young Kingdom of Prussia, but while Polish hussars managed to occupy Berlin, they failed to make any longterm gains in their rush to the Sleswig-Holstein coast, although they managed to restore the independent status of Lubeck.

Spoiler :

Italian military engineers were sent to England. In return, many English intellectuals visited and settled in Italy.

Spoiler :

The High Council of Italian Cities decided to make Tunis its second place of residence. This greatly strengthened the ties between Italy and Berber Africa.

Spoiler :

Wars continued to rage in Central Europe. In revenge for Polish hussars galloping though the streets of Berlin, Prussian grenadiers occupied Warsaw, although their occupation lasted only a few weeks.

Spoiler :

Unfortunately for Italy, Prussia was not the only European force to harbour revengeful sentiments. Spanish kings had long resented Italian ownership of Barcelona, and in 1715, a large Spanish army started the Third Italian-Spanish war by overrunning the perfunctory defences of the city.

Them Spanish...

Will we see some Italian nuking of the Spanish possibly? :)

Later historians would extensively document the injustices done to peasant population of South Italy, the hard labour they were subjected to in order to provide resources for the Italian army in order to stave of the Spanish assault. Not that the leaders of the Italian League particularly cared what later bleeding-heart historians would say about them.

Spoiler :

Both sides concentrated their troops in Provence. The fate of Marseilles would determine the result of the war.

Spoiler :

First Spanish assault on the city was largely successful. However, the Italians were not about to let the city fall, sending a trickle of reinforcements that made the Spanish task of capturing the city difficult.

Spoiler :

Constant sorties from the Italian side pestered the Spanish troops, wearying them out.

Spoiler :

Finally, Italian Cuirassier troops arrived to the scene, breaking the Spanish army.

Spoiler :

The defeat of Spanish at Marseilles resulted in a number of breakthroughs in Italian military doctrine. General Garibaldi's academy in Florence produced a number of distinguished military minds in its history.

Spoiler :

However, as the Italian army was preparing to recapture parts of Catalonia that were Italian before the war, they were faced with new Spanish troops, equipped with latest advances in rifle technology.

Spoiler :

Italy was forced to sign a peace treaty, keeping Provence, but paying a tribute to Spain.

Spoiler :

Italians could find solace in their country being an undisputed leader in cultural prosperity.

Constitutional ideas and talk about liberty swept the Italian cities. But at the same time, European monarchies modernized their militaries with new rifles. The League thought that an alliance with the kingdom of France could make other European powers vary of attacking Italy.

I've actually been researching Constitution for Jails to help my stability... ah, the irony.

Spoiler :

These hopes proved to be futile. Spanish nobles, seeing how the new model rifles and cannons stopped the Italian offensive into Catalonia, declared war again, with the intention to annex Provence for good.

Spoiler :

The French king proclaimed himself loyal to the defensive pact and engaged the Spanish troops in Provence, recapturing the city of Marseilles. However, despite prompting by the Italian Council, France refused to cede Provence back to Italy, citing France' old right to the area and the "unlawful seizure" of Marseilles by Italy back in the Middle Ages.

Spoiler :

When the Italians repeated their demands, France decided to tear the Pact and join its fellow monarchy in the war against the Free Cities. Since then, the phrase "never trust a Monarch" became common on the Italian streets.

Spoiler :

The French, after seizing Marseilles, entered Liguria.

Spoiler :

Italy had to pay a large sum to the French treasury in order to get the French of her back. Marseilles remained French.

In the version of RFC-DoC I am using, France' UP of its enemies never refusing to talk with it also results in French AI always being willing to talk to the player, even right after it declares war. Can be exploitable, though if the player is particularly weak, France may agree to talk, but still insist that nothing the player can give to it is enough for peace

Spoiler :

But the monarchies of Europe were not done with their revenge yet. In the Congress of Luxor (why would anyone hold a Congress in Sudan, the Italian counsellors didn't know, although they were never invited, anyway) the European monarchies demanded that Italy cede Serbia to the Polish king, who proclaimed himself to be the defender of all Slavic peoples. When Italy refused, Poland declared war on it.

Spoiler :

Britain was the only European monarchy friendly towards Italy. Its colonial posessions traded with the League to the benefit of all.

Spoiler :

Free trade with Britain and her colonies caused the collapse of old medieval guild system in Italian cities. A new, capitalistic, system of commercial relations was growing in Italy - more free, but also more ruthless. There was significant social unrest in Italy due to this, as gangs of disaffected workers burned and destroyed their machines.

Spoiler :

However, more threatening than the internal unrest were the armies of Poland.Vienna, a once-Austrian city whose inhabitants overthrew the Austrians and joined Italy, was now under assault by well-equipped Polish armies.

Spoiler :

The Italians concentrated their troops in Venice, determined not to let the Polish enter the peninsula. But a Polish triumph on the streets of Vienna was unavoidable.

Spoiler :

After capturing Italian Austria, Polish troops turned around and entered the Balkans, capturing the city of Belgrade, which was the casus belli for this war.

Spoiler :

However, going so deep into foreign territory didn't play out well for the Polish. Italian troops surrounded them in Serbia, picking the Polish detachments one by one.

Spoiler :

The World in 1759

Spoiler :

The Russian Empire was a long enemy of Poland and its claims to represent all of Slavdom. It gladly provided funding to Italy in order for it to sooner introduce the new rifling techniques in its weapon manufactories. In return for this, many Italian scientists were welcomed to the new Russian Academy of Sciences.

Spoiler :

Polish troops in Belgrade, even with their superior equipment, were dealt severe damage by consequent Italian artillery attacks.

Spoiler :

Finally, Italy was able to reconquer Serbia from Poland. Note, however, the red text - specifically, the bit that says that Moskva was captured by the Ottomans. The Turks were becoming more and more dangerous day by day.

Spoiler :

The defeat of Poland in Serbia and the growing Turkish menace led to Italy and Poland signing a peace treaty, with Vienna remaining in Polish hands.

Look at australia in the map. Almost completely settled already.

Never? It's pretty strange. Now, my boosts to DoC AI, Emperor and Marathon all mean a faster settling of Australia than in base DoC - Monarch - Normal, but never seeing one is rather remarkable, unless you regularly finish your game by early 1700'ies.

Well, it does support my specialists. Besides, I don't really need the benefits of Dynasticism or Theocracy.

The small HRE rump state in Hungary was absorbed by Italy, with the merchant Donato Peruzzi being declared its representative in the Italian Council.

Spoiler :

Still, it was not enough to compensate for the widespread feeling of humiliation in Italy at losing Austria and Provence. The merchants of the Council were widely considered to be incompetent, with saucy songs about them sung in the streets of the Italian cities. This greatly damaged the emerging Italian national consciousness.

Spoiler :

The Hungarian Revolt, which kicked Italy out of Budapest, transferring its ownership to Poland, didn't improve matters.

Spoiler :

The only good thing in the latter half of the 18th century in Italy was the revival of the Olympic Games. Since most of Greece was under the Ottoman control, they were held in Rome.

Spoiler :

The very end of the century saw some positive developments in Italy as Italian intellectuals travelled far and wide around the globe, absorbing the mosaic of technological and societal ideas which were proliferating in the more and more interconnected world.

Spoiler :

Eager to restore its international position, the Italian Council agreed to join the Spanish war on the Ottomans.

Spoiler :

The Council agreed to the Spanish proposal, since a talented new general named Agostino Graziani just recently oversaw a complete modernization of Italian artillery, making it a formidable force on the battlefield.

Spoiler :

However, this was the Council's undoing. Graziani had a large number of supporters in the army and among certain sections of the Italian popular classes. Soon after the start of the Italian-Turkish war, a populist revolt deposed the Council as an active political force, proclaming Graziani to be the Supreme Consul of the newly-created United Italian Republic.
