Is it just me or are cottages/hamlets/etc useless? i do not see them adding to my income like in normal civ4, is the only way to earn substantial amounts of gold by converting your production in a city to wealth and great merchants? I just seems like im missing something or playing the MOD wrong.

Some advocate building cottages as a means to improve stability since they progress into different improvements that give more bonus, though it can actually be achieved with simply rebuilding your land. I don't bother with cottages.

Cottages always were adding commerce, not gold. And they are overpowered in "vanilla" BtS. In RFC they are nerfed because of tons of resources. But still I consider them as vital part of economy.

I find cottages useful mainly on grassland, when you don't want to lose food from a workshop or gain it from a farm. It also generates some commerce, which is fine.

OK, I'm a noob (I play Monarch only so micromanagement is not crucial) but I find commerce the most important thing in the game. Without it it's very hard to make research and so it's hard to crush civs with tanks vs their musketmen.

When I play on Monarch I have a lot of competition for the techs with just cottages, so I add a lots of merchants and scientists (thanks to all food ressources) in my cities to crush the others civs technologically.

You must be careful about your number of cities, before have more than 10 cities I try to have all buildings that improve my economy (market, grocer, bank, ...) at least in 5 cities, which are generally my metropolitan cities (when I play a colonial power) and tribunals in my distant colonies.

So I use a "Hybrid" Economy, a mix between Specialist and Cottage Economy, and just care about too fast expansion.

Cottages are necessary for Russia and maybe Inca.

A well spread out Germany can also make good use of cottage economy, as does America.

I always thought cottage economies were so powerful in Vanilla BTS because empires tend to be much bigger with huge expanses of grassland and therefore having lots of cottages (and nothing else) makes you super rich super fast.

Wheras in RFC, the majority of civs don't control vast grassland empires, exceptions being:
    Russia
    America
    Germany
    China
    Turkey? (too many plains?)
Arabia? (too much desert to be a true contender imo)
    England? (too much coast?)
France? (if you play a full empire game you can get some nice cottage lands going, especially in America/Canada)
Spain/Portugal? (though you need to chop the Amazon)
India? (not played this one late game, how do we fare with a cottage economy here?)

Chopping jungle in Brazil may seem good but world wide nuking quickly turns all grass into desert before you get much benefit from Amazon cottage economy.

And even with a ton of workers it would take a hell lot of time, and it wouldnt be as beneficial as it would have been if a CE had been started earlier.
