As most of us probably have noticed Musketmen do not upgrade to Redcoats or Garde Imperiale. While Redcoats and Garde Imperialle aren't made obsolete by Infantry they seem out of place next to machineguns and tanks.

However the unit upgrade system seems to be made in such a way that Musketmen can only upgrade to Infantry (and civ specific units replacing infantry), but cannot be upgraded to other units.

Now; musketmen are strength: 55, Redcoats and Garde Imperiale are strength 65+unique bonus, while Infantry is strength: 70.

My suggestion is this; why not introduce a generic line unit together with Redcoats and Garde?
Redcoats and Garde Imperiale are non-rifle units and that is why suggest Line Infantry instead of Riflemen, since riflemen makes less sense without rifling.

A basic strength 60 or 65 unit that would replace Musketmen and upgrade to infantry, but lacks the Redcoats bonus on foreign continents and the garde's bonus on home continent.

Instead of being stand alone civ unique units the Garde and Recoat could now be a Replace "Line Infantry" unit.
excample:
<Row CivUniqueUnitType="UNIT_REDCOAT" ReplacesUnitType="UNIT_LINE_INFANTRY"/>

Drawbacks, or side effect, would be that if Line Infantry/Rifleman then upgrade to Infantry, they dissapear earlier than usual and do not last until Mechanized Infantry. On the other hand redcoats and garde Imperiale will not fight side by side with tanks and machineguns.

However, it would also allow people playing France and Britain to upgrade units of Musketmen they have instead of having to produce their unique units from scratch, and by the time you have a few, you can build Infantry anyway.

Would not being able to to upgrade them directly be more useful than than having to begin building them, and despite them also becoming obsolete quicker, wouldn't this make them overall more useful in the game, increasing their chances of fighting against inferior or equal adversary units?

Thoughts?
