    Reserved for more mecha

It should be noted that I did not in fact make these units, I'm just sharing them with the community, since they came with a now undownloadable mod. There may be more mecha hiding inside that mod, if I find them, check this thread lol. But thankyou for the kind words guys.

Riptide was one of the best unit makers around...why he wanted to go make stuff for simcity of all games I will never know.

Ripptides units were almost always well modeled, but the animtion was typically stiff and limited. While none of his units were below average, they were all "moderately good" to "just ok". He was fairly prolific and I use a few of his units myself. But he is not one of the retired Civ3 creators I really miss seeing new stuff from. The problem was his animating skill did not match his modeling skill (well those units he actually modeled, which is turning out to be very few since most of them can be found for sale from others not Randy).

I can model too. Better then most, though not as well as the best. But to me the more important skill and the more difficult to master is Animation. And, it is here that Randy was strictly mediocre. There are quite a few of the current unit creators who are far better unit creators than Randy ever was. Wyrmshadow, Aaglo, Orthanc, Utahjazz7, CamCJ, Hikaro, and so no (not dissing anyone just no point in listing all of you). Basically, I don't understand why everyone puts the word great anywhere near Ripptides name... "decent", "prolific", "fast", "pretty good", those all fit. But we have had (and still have) some GREAT ones. I just don't get Ripptide being in that mix.

His stiff and limited style works reasonably well with these mecha though. I know I will be downloading most of these. Thank you very much for making these available again Sword of Geddon. There are a number of units and other files from EVO and CDG that I have been kicking myself for not DLing when I had the chance. These cool mecha were high on that list.

That really, really, REALLY pissed him off when I wrote that about him. But we were going at it so I did it on purpose. Are these all the units he did for Btech?

His Arab Swordsman and Spearman were perfectly decent animation-wise, I thought - never looked at any of his others as I'm not interested in vehicles.

Anyway, I've retitled this thread so that his name is spelled correctly! I've also put a link to it in his post on the Unit Artists' Library thread, and deleted Swog's post at the end, to keep things neater.

I'm not anti-ripptide. If memory serves (and it seldom does), at or about the same time as Ripptide and Wyrmshadow were trading unfriendly remarks was around the same time as Wyrmshadow and I were doing the same. But even with this "incentive" (you know enemy of my enemy must be my friend) I never thought his units were super duper. Certainly useable. Most certainly very prolific. Civ3 is better because of his efforts. But if I could pick him or someone like Bebro to comeback, it would be no contest.

Unfortunately no. But you can make the units 32 yourselves by using a paint program and changing the white in the small civiliopedia icons to the invisible pink. I'm sure Bjorn or any of the other unit makers know the pallette color combination to make invisible pink.

I make my Units_32 icons by taking the first frame of the default (or, for variation, last frame of the fortify) animation, increase it to true color, crop it, shrink it, and then load my blue Units_32.pal (which converts all the blue civ colored parts to civ color, since the Units_32.pal uses the same civ-color set up that all unit pallettes use), then I load the standard (red) units_32.pal with the "Maintain Color Indexes" checked (basically, it loads the pallette so that the first color of the new pallette replaces the first color of the old pallette, and so on for all 256 colors, so that all pixels that are identified with a particular color number will have the new color associated with that number), so that ONLY the civ-colored parts will turn red.

Now you have a properly sized and colored Units_32.pal

And thanks for these mecha... I may be using a few for the Al Bhed in the FF mod....

I got the Turk finished and uploaded for you today too HT, so you must be having a field day lol.

I wish Ripptide finished that Battletech mod.

BTW, there is more units from that unfinished mod to come, space fighters and such mostly. I'll sort that out soon.

Is there not a units32 file with the MOD? Perhaps just post it here and save the new guys some stress?
