"Rise Of Nations" looking better and better the more I read about it.....

I've spent the entire afternoon reading previews from various PC game sites about the upcoming RTS-TBS fusion, Rise Of Nations. This game appeals more and more to me with each preview I read. Some of the nice touches in the game are the fact that each unit in the game is represented by three individual troops, making the battles look much bigger and more action-packed. Also, it has a more complex combat system than Civ, as not only does unit attributes and terrain type affect combat modifiers, but also tactics are rewarded, as attacking from behind or along the flank of your enemy confers significant combat bonuses. the game evn has strategic resources, just like in Civ3, with things like oil not appearing until your nation can build those units that require the resource. Oil can be located in the sea, which even makes navies useful! :)

There's a ton more that I haven't mentioned, not to mention the amazing graphics this game has. Trust me, seek out the previews for this game, you'll be blown away. :)

Oh, and one final note. Although the beta is now playable for Rise Of Nations, the game isn't going to be released until spring 2003. Guess what is happening from now until then? PLAYTESTING. ;)
 
Guess I'll be the devils advocate :)

Personally it doesn't look all that impressive to me just another clone from warcraft with a few twists. The only clone I was ever really impressed by was starcraft. Games like age of kings and age of empires just couldn't do it for me.

Itdoes appear to be very promissing but I'll believe it when I see the game in action, great to see that they will be spending so much time getting everything down, you think civ3's mistakes had anything to do with that?

I'm wondering though how much speed will play a factor? In many such games it comes down to how fast you can pump out units rather than strategy and you rarely have time to apreciate the empire you've built.

Still I'll be keeping my eye on it.
 
Northstar, that's what has me so excited about this game.....they go to great lengths to stress the fact that it's not just another click-fest. There will be multiple victory paths, even ones that don't even require combat! :goodjob:

This game is going to have a rich economic/diplomatic/cultural/knowledge quilt inter-woven with the traditional RTS fast-paced action aspect. It looks like the best of both worlds........and yeah, a whole year of fine-tuning and playtesting should do a world of good as well. Firaxis would be wise to take note of this. ;)

Perhaps,

Though maybe their venture capital to mass produce copies is not available to support a release prior to that. Perhaps they know that they have fundamental flaws still not worked out.

Missing the holiday this fall is insane from a marketing standpoint. There has to be powerful reasons for not making it.

Oh, and they can playtest to their hearts content. The night the product is released there will be 200 posts to a board somewhere pointing out a key bug that just ruins the game. It's the nature of development.
 
Good it sounds like fraxis has a little bit of competion now.

Hopefully the makers of this new game will look at the mistakes made in CIV 3 and not make the same.

but whats most important is innovation if this new game is going to do well it has to be a lot different from civ 3.

Well when this comes out I`ll take a look at it.

it would be nice if someone would take away the monopoly fraxis has on Civilization building games (I`m not sure what to call it )but I`d be willing to bet if Fraxis had more competion it's games would be alot better
 
So Rise of Nations is a RTS? Nothing for me then, I don´t like RTS. It gets too frantic and you never have time to plan your moves. I will stick to good old turn-based Civ. :)
 
Rise of Nations looks like it has some posiblities.

but I'm waiting till I have more information.
 
Looks and sounds like AoK on steroids to me. AoK is a nice distraction but Civ is better. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
 
I have the same problems with Rise of Nations as I have with the Civilization boardgame... Will the game still work despite changing formats & developers? At least we don't have to worry too much about the developer - It is Brian Reynolds. :)

You understand the marketing cycle of games, dude. This is smack dab on target. A developer, even one led by Brian, is not given a free had to lazily sit around and blow the milestones specified in the contract. There is a darned good reason, and you can be sure of one thing.... there is a serious problem with meeting a Sept or Oct gold... it takes 5 to 6 weeks after gold to reach the retail shelves.

IMHO, they might likely push into Pre-Christmas 2003, like a July gold and Sept release, but I have no inside info on it.

I`ll play the game, because some media compare it with Civilization. No problem when it is not what I hope. Civ (1,2,3) will enjoy me until my death.. And there are still women on earth :p
 
Well I think the major difference that sets it apart is that you can only gather any resource from its source (mine, forrest, etc) at a limited rate. That means once you hit this, you must find another source to increase the speed of your resource gathering.

That means you don't have a formula like "once you pumped you 5th Probe go build your second Warp Portal..." strategy, which is the singular most prominent thing about Starcraft clones.
 
Sounds pretty cool. I can wait, but I will probably be trying it when it comes out.
