So I'm playing Carthage. First turn, most civs start building Wonders (Ha!)...The default for EVERY one of my cities is a military unit.

Anyway, first turn it's the fight for Sicily. I get the Macedons, Perisa and Eqypt against Rome in alliance with me. (Never mind that the Persia are in front in the begining...I just have to see Rome go down). I lose Hannibal (the only army unit) in the first turn. Eventually take the last Roman city on Sicily with War Elephants.

I make contact with all the barbarian tribes (selling the contacts was a GOOD idea). 2 Turns later...everyone - EVERYONE...is at war with everyone else. The few that have peace, have an alliance in war against someone else. The F4 screen is a joke.

Just thought I'd share...it's fun. I wish that when you were picking a Civ in the begining of the scenarios, it told you a little bit about the starting position before you started the game.

Ah well....just reflecting on a nice civ game I got goin'. BTW...the time limit thing is scary. You no longer can think "I'll get them with artillery in the modern era".....

P

It was good as Carthage.

Then rome came into my Spanish colonies with like 8 Legion 2s. My Numidians just cannot handle that kinda stuff.

I had to use three attempts to win this one as Carthage during the betatests, and even then it wasn't a very convincing victory. But it sure was a satisfying, when I finally pulled it off.

I think the key to this is - hit Rome hard with what you've got from the start, and make sure that you're on good terms with as many civs as possible, to help wear down the Romans before they get a chance.

(ok, I said it was only a Minor Spoiler warning :) )

Agreed...I'm about halfway through and I've taken all of Southern Italy up to Rome. I'm struggling with the trade off of investing a war against a close powerful neighbor, or investing in a war with a far away weaker neigher.

Anyway...Here's a question on Fire Catapults: When I use them, sometimes I get a graphic that looks like an explosion, other times, it looks just like dirt (presumably a miss). The explosion says "Artillery successful. Enemy units damaged."....On the "misses" it doesn't say anything..BUT sometimes it will say "Artillery failed" like it always used to. What's happening when it doesn't say anything? Lazy code? Any ideas here?

I played as Persia, bit dicey for a while holding off constant Hoplite swarms incoming from Macedonia, was launching constant ambushes with my immortals for the attack bonus. Eventually I began to hold my own, and pushed into Macedonia with Heavy Cavalry, then strolled into Egypt to capture their populus cities.

Carthage was the other major power, Rome was making no effort to capture southern territories, merely invading the Celts. Hadrians Wall was a winner for the defence bonus.

Was Regent btw.

I tried as Carthage (lvl above Regent, slips my mind) and I managed to take southern Italy without discovering Elephants. But then I took Rome, and boy all hell broke loose. I suddenly had about 50 Legionairres breaking down my door. But, they took Rome and then suddenly stopped... very strange.

Bottom line, War elephants are MUCH better on the attack then when trying to defend a city.

I am playing as Rome. I found it easy for me to just move all my legions to southern Italy and cross over to Macedonia. Right now I am going after Carthage. For some reason, they are using all of their units to invade Egypt instead of defending themselfs

Could someone possibly post a screenshot of the Oligarchy Government screen from the Rise of Rome Civilopedia? I'd be VERY grateful :) ;)! In fact, could somone start a seperate thread here with ALL of the government screenshots from the Conquests? Thanks muchly from this poor Aussie in major Civ3 Withdrawl :( ;)!!!

wow, your map looks 100% like mine--rome and persia splitting the world ( i was rome:D )

Gah - this scenario is annoying me to no end.

I started as Carthage and built up my military. Quickly, I took over Sicily, and then started a MASSIVE attack on Rome, the heart of the Roman empire itself. But wouldn't you know it. After one army, a dozen war elephants and 10 swordsmen, along with the occasional archers, I STILL couldn't take Rome, Ceaser still having 2-3 weakened units to defend it. By then, every single civ had declaered war on me, my colonies in far eastern-Africa had been captured by the Egyptians, Celts had started raiding my Spanish possesions, and I just quit in frustration.

Playing as Rome is quite fun. I took Sicily and other Carthaginain islands. Then I took out the Celts, and settled like crazy in Spain. I recruited Greece with me and Carthage and Greece had HUGE galley battles. It took a while, but I finally invaved Cathage, and was splitting it apart when I won. Imperialsim is awesome!

Playing at the monarch level as Rome I "won" ( 20% land, 50% population) the game in AD 140. It was an ugly win. Carthage was a real SOB. Historically, Rome was a wuss on the water and this game reflects that fact perfectly. All my ships could do was to hide in port and occasionally run reinforcements from the mainland to the islands.

Even after taking the city of Carthage I could only hold on and wait for my other forces to take him out in the Iberian Peninulsa, cross to Tangier and march east in North Aftica. I did not really conquer much of Gaul but I did take Britain after gaining a foothold early in the game by having a Celtic city in Britain ceded to me as terms of peace.

My only declaration of war in the game was against Alexander late in the game in order to take him out.

Well my second attempt is going much better :)

this time I started as Rome. I quickly took over Sicily, and Corsica, and managed to get the whole world to unite against Carthage. Except for the Celts, who I declaered war on. I quickly took over the city they had on modern day Marseilles and went on to take another newly created one in Southern Gaul. After that I offered peace in exchange for all of their newly created cities, world map/territory map, and gold. I've also established some colonies in Croatia and Slovenia, along with in the Barcelona area.

Next I'm going to take out sardinia with my armies, and perhaps more legionares, while fortifying the recently captured Carthaginian towns. I'll redeclaer war against the Celts as soon as my new cities have defensive units in them. I'll probably take two of their major cities, and then have the same deal as last time. I'll continue this till I have all of Gaul under my control, after which I'll probably settle Gaul and Britian. In the meanwhile, I'll try to gain a foothold in Iberia, and then either attack Egypt or Spain's Iberian possesions.

You could make Egypt playable by editing the scenario. There will be a list of playable civs in the scenario properties area.
