The Hall of Fame Team would like to welcome new players, and welcome back old vets, to the 20th running of the Civfanatics Civ IV Hall of Fame Challenge Series.

HOF Challenge XIX was a successful and competitive installment of the series, won by @Lazybones with a total of 70 points, just two ahead of @Fippy whose impressive 6 first places just wasn't quite enough. @Major Tom was third with 59 points.

14 players participated and 4 different players gained #1s.

HOF Challenge XX is a collection of 10 games running from 25th June to 24th January 2019. The winner will be the person who collects the most points (10 for 1st in each individual game, down to 1 for 10th). Progress and results for all games can be found at http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/challenge.php. There are individual threads for each game in the Challenge Series forum so head on over and check it out.

This challenge continues the "Fall of the Inca" theme, except with a bit of a twist. The Inca are widely recognised as the most powerful nation you can play in Civ IV, especially at the higher levels where the anti-archery bonus for the Quecha UU and it's free Combat I promotion means you have a powerful attacking force from Turn 0. Their UB, the Terrace, is based on a building you will normally construct in every city (Granary) and acts as a mini-creative trait. Their actual traits are 2 of the strongest in the game - Financial and Industrious. Finally their starting techs of Agriculture and Mysticism are very flexible - your workers have something to do immediately and you can compete in the race for early religions if you so desire. The Incans are so strong that their games do not count towards Elite Quatrromaster status and they are not normally chosen for Gauntlets.

Over the last 18 months or so, by carefully targeting Incan games in the HOF tables and with the development of new tactics Incan dominance is down to levels not seen since the mid-2000s. This challenge takes that one step further - now it is time for the "Rise of the English" (and no I'm not talking about the World Cup! As at the launch of the Challenge the English are in second place in the table of Civs holding #1 positions holding 188 slots compared to the Incans 199. So each of these games you will play as one of the 3 English Leaders, Liz is by far and away the most popular of the 3 leaders so 4 of the games mandate either Churchill or Victoria the rest are open.

Some of these games target Incan records so will have a double benefit of replacing the Inca in a slot with the English. New records won't be easy though, this is a Challenge after all!

For those unfamiliar with the CFC Hall of Fame (HOF), we encourage you to try the challenge as a way of introducing yourself to the HOF. The Challenge series is just one feature of the HOF. A Gauntlet series of games is run monthly. In addition you can simply submit any of your games to the HOF. All valid games are recorded to a database and ranked under various categories. The HOF enables you to compare your progress against other HOFers over all time or simply track your own progress. In other words, the HOF is as competitive as you want it to be.

In addition, the CFC HOF offers two ongoing challenge/achievements called the Quatromasters and Elite Quatromasters which can be found here. All valid game submissions to the HOF apply toward your progress to these long-term achievements. Are you up for the challenge? :)

All of the games need to be played using version 5 of the BUFFY mod (BUFFY-3.19.005), found here. Standard Hall of Fame Rules apply to all games.

February 8th has come and gone.

Congratulations @Swordnboard for winning!
Beat both my entries I thought were unbeatable!

You and @Anysense are really strong new players this past year. (Cough, new to me, I'm ancient)
I really liked how you invented that sneaky AP technique and showed how to reroll HOF games with hidden modifiers intact.
Squeezing new things out of 12 year old Civ 4 is harder than blood out of rocks.

HOF Challenge XX was a successful and competitive instalment of the series, won by @Swordnboard with a total of 69 points and 6 #1s, @Dhoomstriker was second with 54 points and 3 #1s (and also broke the system thanks to shenanigans with vassals!). @Powerfaker was third with 31 points.

11 players participated and 3 different players gained #1s.

The English now have a commanding 16 game lead over the Incas in terms of #1 entries, although Huayna Capac is still 1 game ahead of Elizabeth as far as individual leaders go.

Suggestions are welcome for the theme, and individual games, of the next Challenge which will start next month.

Don't have particular ideas for games as I haven't had a look on the HoF table for at least a year, but maybe another "rise of" would be a fitting theme? If going by other popular HoF civs, I'm thinking Rise of Egypt or Persia. Or less popular (game-wise) but more fitting contemporary: Rise of China.

Egypt or Persia is a more narrow strategy as one basically needs horses early, but they have good leaders that are fun to play.

Especially Egypt have strong starting techs too, which should mean strong games even if you lack horses in the start. And both leaders have strong traits that can be used for different types of games.

On China, they have strong starting techs and a cool (if somewhat niche) UU. Protective blows, but other than that they're all right.

I'd probably go with Egypt if you're going to use such a theme again. They're overall very good, and it's simply fun to wage warfare with War chariots early on. Fast and stupid strong for their era. The best players will probably be able to take good advantage of spiritual too.

How 'bout "Rise of the Muricans"! 3 leaders and no uniques of consequence.
