I think i liked the rivers in Civ 2 better, which aided movement and provided alot more defense. Moving along a river was the best way to travel when there were no roads. Lewis and Clark took them whenever possible, the Grand Canyon was discovered by river, etc. And especially defense, rivers were and still are MAJOR defensive obstacles to armies. Entire military strategies revolved around how to cross a river. I know i can change this in the editor, but it just seems to me that it would have been common sense to make rivers much more powerful.

Well, you don't see battleships going up the Mississippi at any speed.

And if I'm not mistaken rivers do give a defensive bonus.

sure, battleships don't go through rivers. but i meant primitive ships, like the curragh or the galley. the galleon wouldn't fit and neither would the other big ships.

I think they give a 10% bonus. I think crossing a river should provide the best defensive bonus for any terrain other than mountains.
