I think that civ 4 should change rivers. You should be able to build a special kind of unit that can travel along rivers and transport units along rivers. You should also be able to build canals between rivers so that you can connect this network. Rivers should act like roads by allowing trade to pass through them. These changes would make the game more realistic, and for me at least, enhance gameplay as well.
 
I agree with this. You should also be able to build a canal that can connect to sea bodies (like suez, panama) besides just using a city.
 
I agree. I liked the Civ 2 idea that units traveling up/down rivers move faster. I look at Lewis & Clark's expedition as an example- they stuck to rivers almost the whole way, and for good reason.
 
Definitely agree with some bonus with travelling along rivers - but only if they can be naviagted. Of course technological advances or some tile improvement could be done to enable rivers to handle traffic.
